Looking for a few more players.
I am looking for a few more players to join my game. It's called Greg's Awesome Diplomacy Game for Attractive People. The password is mountaindew (no caps or spaces). It's mostly my friends but I guarantee you we won't team up based on friendship. I thought we could get a few more players but nobody responded. Please join. Thanks.

Something is Wrong.
One of my non-chat games has a message thing on it, but when I click on it, it brings me to the game which says that there is no chat available. I'm not complaining or anything, I'm just wondering if that has happened before.

And trade contiues to go on between the EU and the US, Putin...

I can see where Germany and France might be disgruntled by the US...period, yes, but defintiely economically, but even so, that HAS to be outweighed at some level by the idea that a union between the EU and US and Canada would effectively be the single strongest controlling body on the globe.

Chiona wouldn't have a CHANCE against the combined political and economic power of the two together...

I'm not saying the EU should allow the US to ever join--neither side would want to join, and...well, it's the EUROPEAN Union, and America's in North America, so that's a bit of a misnomer right there.

But a Western Union isn't that far off of an idea...obviously NATO exists strategically, and the G-8, with the exception of Japan, is made up of European/North American nations, and that deals with the major economies (minus China, but, again, this is a Western thing...)

So, essentially, what I propose is a sort of merger of those two ideals:

A merger of the strategic alliance and allegiances in the West as evidenced by NATO and the economic unions as shown by the G-8?

That covers the politics and economics...throw in the fact that, again, North America and Europe essentially have a shared cultural background--the Dutch, Spanish, English, French, and so on all colonized both America and Canada, and any cultural gap between two nations can be bridged by a third in the group, ie, even if there are disconnects between the US and France, Canada and the UK could help bridge that gap--and, I say it again:

A Western Union built on the cornerstones of shared political, economic, and cultural backgrounds, futures, and interests should and, I believe, will come of age in the next century, especially if Indo-Chinese domination of the marketplace continues to expand.

@Putin:

-OK, fair point on the Brussels/Washington D.C. parallel...Washington was the compromise between those who wanted the capital in Virginia or further south to honor Washington and the Southern leaders of the Revolution and those who saw Philadelphia or NY or Boston as a site worthy of the capital and based in the North...so I guess how I can see a similar compromise making Brussels the unofficial capital, as its intimately connected to England, the Netherlands, France, and Germany historically and geographically makes sense for the EU--but for NATO? Not to put the EU or Canada down, but for a MILITARY alliance...doesn't placing the capital in...well, the place with the biggest military might to protect said capital and alliance make sense...so shouldn't Washington be the capital, maybe?

-Interesting point on Switzerland...you really think Switzerland would fly apart at the seams if it jsut interacted a bit more, though? That makes it sound almost repressed...like if it takes ANY international action, it'll just fracture...that's not exactly a stable-sounding nation...

For a Western Union to exist outside of your political wet dreams obiwanobiwan, people have to want it. A sizable portion of Europe barely are OK with the EU, and a significant minority in the United States would like the country to leave the UN!

Even beyond people needing to want something for it to happen, there also needs to be a reason. There's no good reason for Finns and Canadians to be in the same country.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
1. I never said the same country, I said a union

2. The people will want it if it becomes necessary, and if India and China continue to grow as they do...

I'm not saying we'll all be in a big, happy, "political wet dream" family by 2012.

I'm saying that by 2112 I'd certainly expect SOMETHING like it.
Invictus (240 D)

Why? Why is a transcontinental political union the answer? I would think a strong Indo-American alliance would be a more realistic future than yet another dysfunctional international institution.

Alright alright what the fuck are you guys talking about.

Also, krellin, you get worse every day. I mentioned the far-right because that is what is on the rise in Europe, so that is the worrying trend. Don't worry, I dislike extreme leftist anarchists and eco-terrorists just as much.

But that's not what just happened in Norway so I didn't bring it up, capiche?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
Well, a strong American-Chinese alliance would just break the rest of the world's banks, wouldn't it?

Is a US/Chinese alliance going to happen?

Nope.

I can see trade negotiations with India, but there's not enough of a shared political and cultural interest to make a union, it takes all three, economic, political, and cultural reasons.

I posit the following, simply:

1. Unions are the way of the future in a union-dominated world economy
2. Unions take time to occur
3. Unions occur as the result of shared political, econic, and cultural interests
4. Unions can only form when all three of these interests are shared at the same time
5. Unions can only form if these interests have both short and long-term roots
6. The EU and the US+Canada have long-term roots
7. The EU and the US+Canada have shared cultural, economic, and politica interests
8. China and the Arab States are growing and unfriendly economic and political powers
9. The EU and the US+Canada have a shared interest that conflicts with China/The Arab States
10. Therefore, sometime in the distant future, the economic, political, and cultural roots being sown, a short-term need for a united front against China and the Arab States may, in a globalized and unionized economy, produce a Western Union of sorts between members of the EU, Canada, and the US for political and economic gain as well as cultural exchange

That is my argument.

If it's valid, let it stand, if it's not, point out which #s you feel are in error and, thus, can derail the process from 1-10.
Invictus (240 D)

1. How is the world economy union dominated? The EU is the only political union of any real significance, and it is coming apart at the seams. Most trade agreements are bilateral.

2. Yeah, a union would take time. Since it takes time there needs to be a good reason for people to invest such a huge amount of time and effort into it. A Western Union has no such driving reason. Even a North American Union doesn't.

3. Perhaps, but you still need a compelling reason for the state to surrender its sovereignty.

4. Nope. War can do it pretty nicely too.

5. Too simplistic. What cultural interests do Spaniards and Finns have in common?

6. That's true.

7. Also true, more or less.

8. Close enough.

9. Too simplistic. America's interests in the Persian Gulf or South China Sea are vastly different from Denmark's, for instance.

10. I don't understand how that follows.

Seriously, this won't happen. Ever.

I'm not sure why there would be any need for Canada and the U.S. to form any new trade block. They're only two nations so I don't see anything like the EU ever being remotely appropriate.

Also, I don't need Uncle Sam having any more influence than it already does on Canada.
canada is going to be very rich in the near future, I think the hesitation would be on the canadian side truthfully
Yonni (136 D(S))
25 Jul 11 UTC
SC, I'm just not sure what the purpose of any of it would be. From what I understand, the EU serves a purpose because it unifies trade law etc. between many nations.

Anything the U.S. and Canada needs to deal with can be done directly between the two.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
NATO is in Europe because virtually all the countries in NATO are in Europe. It makes no sense to have the HQ in the US because the whole purpose of NATO, or at least the purpose it ended up having was to "defend" western Europe (it's original purpose was to prevent Germany from rising again, that quickly changed when they admitted West Germany into the bloc).

And if you'll recall, France basically withdrew from NATO until recently. There's a lingering feeling within the alliance that it'd be better if Europe had its own military alliance independent of Washington. The flip side of that though is that they'd have to pull their own weight when it comes to defense spending.

"you really think Switzerland would fly apart at the seams if it jsut interacted a bit more, though? That makes it sound almost repressed...like if it takes ANY international action, it'll just fracture"

I didn't say they'd fall part if they "interacted" more, I said they'd fall apart if they took sides in a war among France, Germany and Italy. Switzerland does interact, it simply takes its neutrality seriously (until it joined the UN that is). Switzerland also has a unique government set-up of direct democracy that is not compatible with taking orders from the EU.

As for China and India being "competitors" with the US and Europe, I think that's a gross exaggeration. India and China collectively only comprise maybe 11% of global GDP. The US and Europe comprise something like 60%+. They're worlds apart.

Furthermore, the US, if anything, wants the EU to disintegrate. It has done whatever it can to divide Europe against itself. The EU and the US see each other as competitors competing for shares of the same pie.

Canada has a tiny population. It's not going to be on an equal footing with the US anytime in the near future. They are the hewers of wood and the drawers of water for global economy.
i hear its getting warmer though, and abundant resources will be draw people there to live and work
Cachimbo (1181 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
It's not getting that warm. And it's certainly not getting warm fast enough at that rate!

which is why all of a sudden Canada is locked in a dispute with Russia over their North Pole claims. Will Canada be a new farming paradise? Maybe not. Will Canada enjoy wealth in minerals and fuels and become a bigger player on the world stage? I would bet on it.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Jul 11 UTC
I think warming is going to cause more problems for Canada than opportunities. How much forest cover has Canada lost due to the increase in number of insect pests due to warming weather?
Yonni (136 D(S))
25 Jul 11 UTC
The most interesting effect of global warming I think might be the northwest passage.
I generally have never ever felt the need for Canada to increase it's military capabilities but to maintain our sovereignty over the pass we need to have something stationed there. (An ice breaking battleship?).

With the Russians claiming the north pole, the Americans extending Alaska's borders and all of the world paddling through the NW passage, we need to figure out shit out at some point.

dexter morgan (225 D(S))
25 Jul 11 UTC
The benefits of Canada or other northern countries from global warming, though, I think are outweighed, not only by the over all global increase in economic hardship, suffering, famine, war and death... but the fact that such issues will not be contained neatly into some corner of the world... even for Canada, they will be dealing with far less security. I believe pragmatism to be at the center of international relations... and if in 40 years, America's center becomes a dustbowl/desert and Canada a producer of oranges, etc. don't be surprised when an American refuge problem overwhelms Canada - or even, America decides to annex Canada.
