This Time On Philosophy Weekly: A Socialist, Fascist, and Elitist Walk Into A Bar...
A bit of an offshoot from an earlier discussion a few days ago, wherein Socialism was examined ...well, needless to say I don't care for it, but I know Putin33 is, perhaps, our leading Socialist "voice" on the forum, and Fasces our leading proponent of Fascism, and I champion for a Republican Meritiocracy...any and all others are welcome--a break from the Royal Wedding and Bin Laden talk...Round Table Chat, anyone? ;)

I'll start by nominating Napolean Bonaparte. Skilled diplomate, ruthless military strategist. Escaped from more than one tight spot and was well liked by people who should have known better and were screwed because of it.

Slow Server
Is there anything I can do if webdiplomacy is not displaying up to date information? It tells me I need to move but when I get to the game we are still waiting for someone else, tells me I have a new message but when I get there, there is no new message, showing old games in the top bar...stuff like that. Thanks

Transhumanism and the Death of Osama Bin Laden
As a transhumanist, I find even Osama's death tragic. The most beautiful thing in the world - the complexity and brilliance of a human mind, was ended today. And it may have been necessary. It may have been just. But that doesn't make it any less tragic. A human being, misguided as he may have been, but a human being nonetheless, with feelings, thoughts, and desires was murdered today.

Well I was Austria, and I wanted to be nice to Italy cause he came in late, and ally, except he was very persistent in attacking me, which gave me a lot of headaches early on. After Italy was gone, it was smooth sailing, mainly cause the western continent was such a mess.

Yea England made three big mistakes up in the west. First he did not funnel more troops into Russia all because of his second mistake his lack to get rid of France from his home land. thirdly he instead of protecting me at kiel in 1907 he decided to allow france to take it and at the same time he tries to attack him. Tell me why would you try to attack some who is growing stronger.

The larger question is....when France and England saw Austria growing because of Italy's CD...and then growing as he surrounded Turkey....why why why did they not kiss and make up and fight the growing southern menace? Answer: because they are newbies!

+1 indy

Also, what I don't get is how England consistently failed to recognize that by not covering his home centers, France could simply retreat his fleet to yet another center. France should have been crushed that game but England continued to make regular mistakes and France reaped the rewards.

I also enjoyed the fight over Belgium for the first three game years.

Being Turkey in that game was bs. Russia was an idiot, England's sporatic attacks were his downfall and Austria's lack of ethics led him to an incredably hollow win, and to top it off my internet decided to fail for an hour resulting in my resignation from the game, it was quite frustrating.
"Austria's lack of ethics"

I fail to see how Austria acted unethically. He spent the whole game fighting Italy and when Italy drops out he's supposed to just agree to end the game?

What kind of message does that send? You can just do whatever in a game, drop out if you get bored or frustrated because you're losing and it's okay because everyone will just end the game? And if you're the neighbor of one such player, prepare to spend the next few hours either getting killed or stalemating until the other guy gets bored and quits, whereupon you are compelled to end the game and make those hours a waste?
And explain to me how Russia was an idiot. Looks to me as though YOU started the fight without ensuring Austria would stay onside, and you never backed off and gave Russia a chance to consider another option. He got swallowed up by the West because he couldn't turn to face them -- because you never backed off.

I am not quite sure how i failed ethically. I tried to give Italy a chance when he showed up late. 2 Chances actually, and then he just threw everything at me. ><

"Also, what I don't get is how England consistently failed to recognize that by not covering his home centers, France could simply retreat his fleet to yet another center. France should have been crushed that game but England continued to make regular mistakes and France reaped the rewards." - That's a common mistake among new players. I do it all the time when I'm playing variants with which I've had relatively little experience on vDip. It's very annoying. It takes a while to get used to a map so you stop making that mistake.

Austria knowing italy would NMR the first move sent all of his units my way and when italy did show up he only needed to units to defend himself and kept rushing my fronts, with nothing to worry about in the east he took an unfair advatage against me and russia, not to say that a present italy would have changed it but austria's progression would have been quite more cautious.
And Russia is an idiot because even in the 2 year span I let up on Sev to attack austria in the balkans, he still just sat there supporting holds in Sev and Ukr while England managed to cornhole Stpeter and Moscow.

Uh. I did not know italy would NMR first turn. I started out with standard opening.
"Austria knowing italy would NMR the first move sent all of his units my way"

...you're kidding me. The Galician Variation of the Balkan Gambit is one of Austria's most popular openings. It's really effective in a gunboat because Italy doesn't usually go after Austria to start, which means Austria DOES throw the kitchen sink at the East. That's the POINT, and it's not because Italy NMRed.

"and when italy did show up he only needed to units to defend himself and kept rushing my fronts,"

How fucking dare he defend himself from Italy and still be able to attack you. The audacious bastard.

"with nothing to worry about in the east he took an unfair advatage against me and russia, not to say that a present italy would have changed it but austria's progression would have been quite more cautious."

One, you don't know that Italy wouldn't have allied with him. Be glad that you only had a one-year-late Italy that attacked Austria instead of a fully active Italy that ran a Lepanto. Two, what is "unfair"? He took *no* advantage over Russia, he allied with Russia against you until he had the chance to eat Russia for himself.

"And Russia is an idiot because even in the 2 year span I let up on Sev to attack austria in the balkans, he still just sat there supporting holds in Sev and Ukr while England managed to cornhole Stpeter and Moscow."

Dude... he couldn't have defended Sweden, couldn't have defended St. Petersburg. He made a dumb play harassing Germany, sure, but it was clearly out of desperation, since England took out Scandinavia and he had no hope of expanding anywhere else. And by the time England took Moscow you were back to hammering Sevastopol.

(sort of) quick question
Just wondering about something. If you try to cut support, but the unit whose support you are trying to cut is support held by another unit (only one though) will support still be cut? For example, if Burgundy support holds Belgium, and Belgium support moves Ruhr into Holland, and I try to move from North Sea into Belgium, will Belgium's support move be stopped or not?
