Posting forum in a game
Sorry for this simplistic question, I have just joined up today and have joined several games. My question is this: If I sent a post during a game using the forum to a specific person, can everyone see it or just the person I sent it to? Thank you and apologies if this has been asked/answered.

Bug
It looks like for the past 3-4 hours there has been a bug in the pregame code, which resolved itself as I went to fix it somehow.

In 0.75 the gamemaster is separate from the main script, and bugs in games are isolated and allow other games to be processed, so hopefully bugs which bring the whole thing down will be a thing of the past

Sorry for the inconvenience

Christmas truce?
Could we maybe have the site paused from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day? I certainly don't want to log on to keep my games going - I want to spend the time with my family. What does anyone think?

Automatic refresh
Every time I enter a game, the page starts to refresh automatically every 3 seconds, which gets a little annoying. Is it only me? (and if it isn't, can it be fixed?)

Not following traditional ruleset?
In a game I'm in France grabbed Spain and Portugal in 01 with 1 army. In the board game rules, a previously unowned SC has to be occupied in the fall to count as captured.

civil disorder?
When a country is shown as being in civil disorder, I know this means the player's left the game, but how do they do that? There are a few games I'd like to leave.

Be able to send an invitation email from the site. So you can type non members email addresses in which gives them a link to the game you've created, auto gives them a password based on the email address and asks them to create a user name.
Downside would be could phpDiplomacy cope with the huge growth?

Bug list ?
Hello,

Is there a bug list somewhere ? (I don't find it on sourceforge) What is the procedure to submit a bug ?

In this game: http://phpdiplomacy.kuliukas.com/board.php?gid=154 Austria lost the TRI supply center after a stalemate.

Lost Passwords
Is there currrently a way of resending lost passwords? The player "Fart" had his password email put into spam and deleted, and now has no way of logging on at all. If there isn't a way to do this, I feel that it would be a valuable addition to the site.

More comments...
1) The whole site claims to be HTML4.1, but the game listing fail the W3C validation test
2) Please can you add a resign button. It would allow people who want to leave games to do so without their empire being wrecked for whoever tries to take over. Not a hard upgrade, just copy across some of the code from the script that sets an empire as in civil unrest.
3) I know its a break from the game, but i think that retreats should stay as they are. This is because, you can currently surround a unit, and attack it with three units, and yet it can then run away to one of your other nations. In a real battle, they would be followed. Basically, what im saying is that giving the ability to retreat to any free uncontested square allows players to make another move when those who 'won' their battles dont...

Unit creation phase bug
Hi! Dunno wether this has been posted or not, but a country should be automatically "done" on this phase if it has no supply centers, or has them all occupied.
In one of my games, a country owns 2 spaces on the map, none of which is a supply center and the player is not 'readied' yet. I've seen this happen before

A few ideas
sorry if I seem a bit foreward, or the ideas have already been presented.
1. Would it be plausible to organise the forum into sections? these would primarily include ideas and bugs.

2. along the same lines, will some form of forum moderator be installed, and the idea of editing posts?

3. How about being able to create 'player groups', where group of players who know each other could interact, and assign games to that particular group, so that players in a game will know each other. I know that the password option is already a good way for doing this, and for the moment it works as there are few members. However, as the number of active players grows, there will be too many 'joinable games' on display, and that can become confusing.
"Comments please..." (sorry to use your phrase figle, but it seemed appropriate.)

Fleet Movement bug
Whenever I move into Bulgaria from Constantinople, the fleet always moves into the north coast. Ditto for creating a fleet there. I think that Spain has the same problem, as does St Petersburg to a lesser extent (the problem there is only with creating fleets, not with movement as there are no ambiguous moves there)

Too many games running?
I want to start a new game (I'm bored right now), but it appears so there are too many games running?

There are too many games currently running, please try again another day.

What? Is there a limit to the games being able to run?

Comment...
Im not sure what should be done about it, but at the moment there is a problem. In the game #128 - http://phpdiplomacy.kuliukas.com/board.php?gid=128 - many players have not been playing. Infact, only Turkey, Russia, Italy and France have been moving, whilst the other three nations have not. This has lead to the fairness in the board layout being disrupted.
Possiblities include adding an option to:
1) Pause game
2) Resign from game
3) Kick players out after 2 days of no moves (goes with 1st!)
Comments please...

Players leaving games is a big problem both in real world board games and phpDiplomacy, and in phpDiplomacy those who leave have the advantage of not knowing who they are leaving, and having other games to join.
I'm not sure exactly how to approach this, a pause button might work, I'll be building on in eventually but probably not in the version I'm working on at present, but I'm not sure.

At the moment the approach is to kick people out after 3 days of not having viewed the game, at which point another country takes over ( and looking at the game you gave it looks like that has happened). The problem with this is it requires that someone is there to take over, and the 3 days the last user was away for is lost, and so the player has a disadvantage.

If anyone has any more suggestions on how the current scheme could be improved I'm all ears

Very sorry to double post, but there is no edit button :P
I've just looked right down to see what people said in the last major discussion had here on improvements to make for the next version.
I noticed that Kestasjk said, when talking about a pause button, that:
"We were talking about adding a CP for games Patrick, but this will be not a trivial thing to add so whether it gets in will depend, if not now it'll be in there in a later version. "
However, after having a look at the code, I have to ask why this is. It requires one more statement in the WHERE section of the SQL, and one more field in the db to actually have it.
Admittedly, how this would be changed, such as who would have the power to pause/unpause the game, is a difficult issue, but just as turns are made, surely all players could have another option beside their moves to click, that would send a request to pause the game. If you are interested in my proposed solution, or would like assistance in the coding (since this is Open-Source) I would be happy to help...
(Sorry to those for whom i use too many technical terms)

When I say "not a trivial thing to add" I'm not so much talking about the coding, but more about the planning. I quite like how, at the moment, no player has power they can abuse, all players are equal. If I add a pause button how will it handle people who pause the game and leave, etc. If the solution is some sort of voting system that requires far more code, if the solution is moderation by an admin outside the game, that also requires more code and it requires an admin to watch over games, if the solution is allowing individual users in the game to be admin that requires a new column in the memberships table. Perhaps the solution is to give admin status to the most senior player; the one with the highest phpDiplomacy rating and thus the one that's the least likely to leave the game mid-way.
Then there's the question of what the CP will do; just pause or unpause, or will it let you kick users, unfinalize moves, etc

It's more of a problem with deciding what to do than going ahead with the decision once made, and I'd like to know exactly what the CP should be before writing anything

How about simply allowing another user to step in and take the idle one's place. Obviously certain conditions would have to be met, such as the player actually being idle. As figle will tell you (personal friend), I can only handle the logical side of coding, and although I don't know exactly how this could be scripted, I would imagine the player could be kicked from the game after three days idleness, and then the game could return to a pre-game state, allowing another player to step in. This also presents the advantage of the player returning if they were unavailable for that period of time. Once the empty slot had been filled, the game would return to its previous state. This is probably similar to the 'pause' idea mentioned above, but that had to brief a description.
Alternatively, the turn enforcement could be made shorter, which would be easier to code, and lessen how boring it would be to wait 24 hours after each turn.

Uh... This all already happens. After a country is inactive, they go into civil disorder, and another player may join the game and take over the country. A pause button wouldn't be good IMO. It could be quite annoying for some people, if its easy to pause the game, and if its hard to pause the game, it wouldn't help.

If anything, I'd suggest just a system of points, that would encourage players to play through a game, even if they are losing. Say, x number of points for winning, y number of points for surviving, and maybe losing points for losing, or dropping out.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
10 Dec 06 UTC
I was thinking along those lines Chrispminis, but what effect would the points have?
If you could set a minimum number of points required to join a game you would get a split of high point games where the players are good and don't leave, and low point games where the players aren't much good and are more likely to leave. It sounds ideal but I think that the new players in new games should be mixed in with the better players if they're going to get better themselves. If there's only a mix of new players they might not get the idea behind the game faster, like what they should be communicating about, and this might make them more likely to leave without understanding what makes the game fun.

I'm not sure whether or not it would work, but it is an interesting solution.

Btw the pause button idea isn't really to do with people leaving, that's more to do with stopping players who can't access the net for a while from having a disadvantage. I think at least it should be enabled for private games where all the members probably know each other.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I like the points idea
What i meant about the pause button however, was that maybe, if three players click PAUSE then the game pauses, until less than three have it paused. That means that one player cannot cripple a good game out of spite..
