Ghostmaker Challenge Game
Since you dare to sneer at my point total, Ghost, the only solution is to burn some up.

You choose the map, the phase length, and the other attributes. Bring it.

statistics resource?
is there anywhere you can parse through tons of game histories and look for move percentages under certain circumstances? I would like to be able to find out stuff like: how often does italian fleet ionian go to greece in autumn 1901? if russia makes it into galicia, and austria is in buda but not vie, where does he usually go?

MODS - Please unpause this game gameID=34657
We paused for Russia a while back. By Friday afternoon, everyone (including Russia) had come back and unpaused except OZ. Its now basically Sunday and OZ hasn't come in yet. The phase has no orders for OZ, so he'd still have the rest of this phase and the next before he'd miss anything. Can a mod please force the unpause to get it moving again?

Alliance Names
i no that turkey and russia have the juggernaut and austria and italy have the lepanto but what if the other nations ally why do they not get alliance names
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Lepanto is a move, not an alliance, FYI.

There is also the Western Triple (FGE) and the Central Alliance (AIG).

I've heard IR called the wintergreen alliance, and EF called the Eastern Juggernaut.

Same here. There is also the Sealion (Russia, France, and Germany against England). There is the Top-of-the-World Sweep (England and Russia), and the Anglo-Saxon, also the Anschluss (Germany and Austria). There is The Peppermint which is Russia and Austria.

There is The Ultimate (France and Italy) and one of my personal favorites The Wall (Austria/England/Germany/and possibly Turkey). There is the Froggernaught (France, Turkey, Russia) and there is The Scissors (Germany, France, and Italy). Auistria, Russia, and Turkey are also known as the Eastern Triple. I call it the Swiss Star (France, Germany, and Italy).

That's all I know adding on from them

I call the Anglo-Turkish alliance the Crunch :) although they both have to do really well for it to work
orathaic (1009 D(B))

AIG are the axis powers, AIT are the central powers. (for historic reasons rather than board positions)

Other notable moves are key lepanto, hey bresto, the lisbon leap, and of course operation sealion.

I don't know any russian openings, but austria has hedgehog, southern hedgehog, the balkan gambit, and many variantions; while turkey has it's own hedgehog... can't remember what it's called. That is just opening moves. The juggernaut is by far the most famous alliance
yebellz (729 D(G))

@acmac10: I thought the sealion was the name of an opening, not the alliance.
http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resources/strategy/articles/sealion.htm
Also, you called FIG both the Scissors and the Swiss Star. I've heard of FIG being called the Swiss Star, but where does Scissors come from?

@peterwiggen: In a similar vein, playing off the colors, I've heard Austria-Russia called the peppermint alliance, and Austria-Italy called the Christmas alliance.

@loftus99: There have been an endless number of nicknames coined for nearly any conceivable alliance. Some are more commonly used than others.
The fact that you have only heard of the juggernaut and mistakenly assumed that Lepanto is the name of the Austria-Italian alliance is only due to your lack of experience, not that people have never thought of names for the other combinations.
People have pointed out a few examples. Try google or read some random diplomacy articles to see more examples.

Russia has the octopus as an opening, which, if I'm not mistaken is a move to the Black Sea, Galicia, Gulf of Bothnia and St Petersburg, with the goal of stopping England in Norway in the fall.

I guess orathic is pushing the discussion now toward opening names instead of alliance names. Those have been more carefully cataloged and named:

@yebellz sorry for my double listing. The scissors is my personal nickname as they look like scissors.

I thought IGA was called the Triple Alliance since that is the alliance they signed in 1882 and would have had in 1901. Of course Italy backed out at the start of WW1 claiming that it was an alliance of mutual defense, not aggressive action.

Ah, so it is. I was looking in the table for the three units moving to Yor, but it shows all three as HOLD for some reason.
Swiss Star is France, Germany, and Austria, hence the confusion above.

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy/Alliances
There's the Austria opening called the Hedgehog. I believe it's Vienna -> Galicia, Trieste -> Venice, and Budapest to Serbia.
Ges (292 D)

Germany-Russia should be called Borshch 'n Brats. I'd much rather have that than peppermint or wintergreen.
peterwiggin (15158 D)
10 Sep 10 UTC
@LJ -- the Hedgehog proper is vie-gal, tri-ven, bud-rum. The variation where bud goes to ser is the Southern Hedgehog, but is usually considered the superior opening, as it guarantees Austria one build against all possible attacks.
@ petewiggin - Thanks, I had a twinge of doubt about whether my definition was right.
yebellz (729 D(G))
12 Sep 10 UTC
@PresEden: the source that you cited actually lists Swiss Star as FIG, contradicting what you said. I guess you meant to say that scissors is listed as AFG

Why won't my orders load?
I've had this problem before.
My orders worked perfectly fine, but then, all of a sudden they stop working. It shows the "Now Loading..." post, but it won't ever load. In addition, messages stay at the first few messages and don't move the the last message.

I am so bleeping sick of multigamers.
I am just going to play password games from now on. Screw these multigaming bleepholes. And if anyone is curious as to whom I am referring may certainly check out my history and see who I played against tonight, Thursday night, and then look at the history of some of the players in that game.
