Anyone want to take control of Italy in this game?

He's in no means in a bad shape.

A question (non-Diplomacy)
Imagine Ireland (EIRE) elected a radical (e.g. IRA) government and started shelling the UK with rockets. Would it be justified for England to retaliate, potentially including a land offensive? Feel free to pick other countries (e.g. BEL-FRA, CAN-USA, POL-GER) if you prefer.

Inquiry into diplomacy ethics...
Essentially, what's the deal with draws. The message follows.
So, in http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6821 I was France. In Autumn 1905, I proposed a draw to Austria, the other dominant player, to occur after eliminating the other powers. This was mainly a ploy to prevent him attacking me and as the game started to get closer to the end, I was expanding much faster than Austria and could have won multiple times. In the end though, I was discomfited by the idea of reneging on my pledge. I ended up drawing the game.

My question: do draws have a special place in terms of lying? That is, would it have been crossing a line to propose a draw and then go for the win?
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Personally, I think that almost anything is allowed. I feel you can offer a draw and then turn away from it, thats perfectly fine.
The only exception is when you talk about taking a draw for non-game reasons. For example, if two players are found to have been mutli-accounts from the same person, you might choose to draw the game. In occasions like this, playing on isn't fair.
Still, that's my opinion for you...
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

I think that no, no, it wouldn't. One of my games: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=7120

I proposed, sometime around 04-05, a draw between AIR after we finished off England.

By 05, I was already telling I and A both that we should do a 17-17, killing the third guy.

In '09, I stabbed Austria (who was winning against I, whom he'd stabbed around, ah, 07-ish?) and declared "Race to 18!"
I won said race to 18, as you can see.

Haha. Nice Panda. That's the way to do it.
Friendly Sword (636 D)

I did something similar as England, planning with Russia to work out a seventeen-seventeen draw.

Unbeknownst to him however, I wa secretly plotting with Austria (who was about to be eliminated).

At the last turn, we orchestrated a major stab.

Russia of course, took it really badly, claiming never to want to cross paths with me again and bemoaning my poor sportsmanship.

I do think that people somehow attach a higher significance to draws as measures of sportsmanship. I can't quite understand why.

Maybe because it is so far to fall?

"Haha. Nice Panda. That's the way to do it."

Why, thank you. I like the last year the most. :3

Yah, i'd break a draw. If i had an easy way to do it, rather than a 7 year plan.
valoishapsburg (314 D)

A draw is only valid once it has been voted on in my opinion. saying you will draw is just diplomacy
Pandarsenic (1485 D)

"Yah, i'd break a draw. If i had an easy way to do it, rather than a 7 year plan."

Well, if 7 years gets you the win, why not?
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))

Draws are one way to end the game other than a solo or a death.
If I have accomplished what I wanted then a draw is sometimes a social way to end the game. Personally I do not think that you have to have any ethical compulsion to finish a game in a solo. Many times a game is not so much fun for you or other players and that is exactly the sort of game that should be artificially drawn.
By artificial I mean a game that is drawn that is not in a stalemate.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Edi: I can think of a prime example of such a game....
Zilph (100 D)

That last year is incredible. Had you been planning that, or was it just opportunism?

I agree with valo.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Zilph: If you mean me, thank you. I'd been planning to attack since 1907, and in 1909 just went figured, as long as I can keep gaining ground I'll do fine.

Which I did. :D
Zilph (100 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Yup, I mean you. That was sweet.

Hopefully you'll never be in position to do that to me. ;-)
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Thanks. :D

I'm pretty sure that last year is the most epic strike I've ever made and will make for a while.
Zilph (100 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Yeah, there's a game in your records (50 pence) where you won with 21 SCs I think, but while that's more impressive, the move you got there with wasn't anywhere near as ballsy.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
50 pence was absurd. Here's a clip of its global chat:
"11 Dec 08 Spring 1903: george is seven and sucks juicy throbbing cock
11 Dec 08 Spring 1903: i dont care about this nobber game
11 Dec 08 Spring 1903: GameMaster: massiveBELL has taken over England.
11 Dec 08 Spring 1903: IMMMM BACKKK

YOU BELLS
11 Dec 08 Spring 1903: u suck dick hartley
12 Dec 08 Spring 1903: he does suck big throbbing cock
12 Dec 08 Spring 1903: pin pin!
12 Dec 08 Spring 1903: charlers get hartley
12 Dec 08 Spring 1903: seaJewel loves big men
12 Dec 08 Autumn 1903: GameMaster: Diesel has taken over Russia.
17 Dec 08 Spring 1904: GameMaster: Mokkel has taken over France.
20 Dec 08 Autumn 1904: GameMaster: btrivett07 has taken over Austria.
21 Dec 08 Autumn 1904: GameMaster: zebu21 has taken over Italy.
Tue 23 Dec Autumn 1904: GameMaster: polymerases has taken over Austria.
Sat 27 Dec Autumn 1905: GameMaster: lulzworth has taken over England.
Mon 05 Jan Autumn 1907: GameMaster: yankeesfan10 has taken over France."

I decided to let Germany clear out everyone else before I took the 18, but then figured I might as well go for the 21. XD
Zilph (100 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Holy crap...that's...wow...

Worth it? ;-)
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Very. I got, like... 642 points off it, even though SeaJewel and I had to put up with the morons. XD

It wasn't really my proudest moment, though. It was more of a chore than a game, really.

Now, pulling off the Russian win against Austria and Italy through happy fun stab and aggressiveness and prediction? THAT has been one of my proudest moments. >:3
Zilph (100 D)

*gets in the car*

You're right, that does sound just a tiny little bit more fun and fulfilling. ;-)

I would never break a draw just for some lousy points - in fact, I prefer 5point games over high point games a lot

however, in the ongoing GFDT, where a solo victory pretty much guarantees you will get into the next round, I just couldn't resist stabbing you Pandarsenic.
Especially since the result of the other game is far from determined

In a f2f diplomacy variant (own produced, "Stockholm Under Siege"), I, playing the Social Democrats and being quite the underdog, managed to lure the Fascists into three consequtive backstabs before getting a three-way draw. Oh, those were the days.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
Akroma: Of course.
Chrispminis (916 D)
11 Jan 09 UTC
I somehow always find myself in 5 point games because I'm always playing in some type of tournament/league/Mastermind+ game... as such, since the point system was enacted I've only gone up by like 40 points! Haha.

Is diplomacy allowed during unit placing and retreats? I think the official rules say that diplomacy should not be allowed.

Display bug
I don't know if this is due to the DB rebuilds of late or if it has been reported before, but we have a difference in unit positions between the large and small maps. See following post.

Can some help this old guy with some translation guides. There are all these squiggly things popping up by you youngsters out there and it would be cool if there was some place on the web to get a translation. I sort of get the abbreviation stuff but I am falling behind the times (again) with these thingees (what are they even called).

Instead of doing the Russian openings and list all of them in great details in the format suggested by Edi. I chose to be lazy and have other players post an opening (Thier Favorite, the most Hated, etc.) So I don't need to do the typing :P.
