Iraq
What were the real reasons for the invasion and subsequent overthrow of the Saddam regime in Iraq by the US and its allies?

"Computer chips, agribusiness, international banking..." LMAO!

You got numbers? WW2 cost, in today's dollars, $5 trillion. War combines them all!

Proof? You are looking for nothing less than a signed confession when all you really need is a lesson in greed. If war can maximize profits absolutely, then the only thing that is stopping you from realizing someone will take advantage of that by any means possible, is your own naivety.

cui bono? Follow the money. Everything else is window dressing.

You have such a low faith in the capacity of people to do good.

It's hilarious that you say I'm the one wrong here when you have made ridiculous accusations with nothing to back them up besides some veiled references to "greed". The one making the accusations has the burden of proof. Without any evidence it's just running your mouth. Or fingers, rather.

except thee reasons that were givern to go to war in iraq were wmds, whcih no one even thought they were there, so if the reason givern was false then there must have been another one. You inictus have far to much faith in your politicans.
Invictus (240 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
We're just coming to different conclusions from the same evidence. I can't believe it was a grand plot for oil or money or what have you till I see proof. Attempting to make a friendly state in the Middle East and remove a committed enemy seem like reason enough. And many people thought that Saddam did have WMDs. I can even see it explained as a load of incompetence at all levels, but you're wrong to fault me for not blindly subscribing to the idea that the Iraq War was a naked grab for treasure without some real, substantial evidence.
trim101 (363 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
america already had a friendly state in the middle east -isreal and you cant really call iraq friendly now anyway. There are worse leaders/dictators in the world then sadam was but you don't see america rushing to remove them, why?because they are in countries with no oil or natural resources. How can you still believe in your government after all the lies.
Invictus (240 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
A friendly Arab state. And I didn't say it had worked.

I suppose we didn't take out Mugabe or Chavez because the Middle East is more important for all kinds of strategic reasons. Oil isn't irrelevant, but it's too simplistic to say it was a war for oil.

I don't believe everything the government says, but I'm not so paranoid that I believe everything is a deception.
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
Invictus, people kill other people for money ALL the time throughout ALL of history. I'd be willing to bet that it happens DAILY.

But apparently, it's a leap from sane to lunacy to believe that it happens on a grander scale.
Invictus (240 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
Yes, yes it is. I accept you concession.

There's no reason my ideas are any less valid than yours. You assume the worst, and I assume good intentions. I would guess mine is more likely, baring any evidence to the contrary.
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
You do know what a false flag is, right? Those who are willing to engage in such a tactic are surely not concerned with the morality or doing what's best for others, are they?
Invictus (240 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
The Iraq was not a false flag operation. Unless the aliens really did it.
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
"I accept you concession" lol...if that's what you thought it was...
Invictus (240 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
I know what you meant. It was a joke.
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
I haven't restricted my argument to only the Iraq war. So you DO know what a false flag is? Yet you would argue "good intentions" just the same?
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
well, good...I laughed. :)
Invictus (240 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
You're switching horses midstream. What false flag operations? You're not one of those 9/11 conspiracy nuts, are you?
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
I never switched horses and it doesn't matter if I am or not. False flags exist as a means to create war (Reighstag fire, Lavon affair are just a couple). So fooling your countrymen to get behind a manufactured war is anything but idealistic, moral, good intentioned, or incompetent.

So what's left?
Invictus (240 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
Just because there have been false flag operations doesn't mean that is the universal view of every person in a position of power. Your argument does not hold up.
Darwyn (1601 D)
21 Nov 08 UTC
you're right, it's not universal, but I never claimed it was...I only chimed in when you claimed to be saddened how people can believe that governments start wars for financial gain. So consider yourself corrected. It happens.

The problem I have is that you undeservedly give the benefit of the doubt to those in power and would prefer "good intentions" or "incompetence at all levels" rather than look deeper. IMO, that's more saddening.

Luckily all of those weapons Sadam had were in a very good position to attack us. The leader of North Korea actualy sends a missile out, fails, and now he's no longer a threat. There are brutal dictators elsewhere, why didnt we take them out? Why arent we following the same idea and intervening in the Darfur region of Sudan? Most the information about Iraq was fabricated. There are many things that could have lead to it. One thing I advise people to look up is the Project for the New American Centruy. Suffice to say, it rather seems like the Neoconservative hand book for Iraq.

As resources become scarcer in the coming years there will most likely be more wars over them, especially water, which is becoming increasingly difficult to access in some parts of the world.

1) He was in breach of all of the ceasefire resolutions which brought the 1991 conflict to a close

2) He was the world's biggest mass murderer alive and in power anywhere at that time.

Question!
Let's say Russia has armies in St. Pete and Finland, and a fleet in Sweden. England has a fleet in the Barents, and an army in Norway.

In search of the lost units (map problem)
The units of games I am reviewing (i.e. not mine, but others' ones) have disappeared from the screen: every time I click "one turn forward", the colours on the map might change, but no units are displayed whatsoever (neither armies nor fleets), apart from the very first slide. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Time limits and their effect on specific powers
Heres a question to ponder- Is there any correleation between the amount of time until orders are due and which countries do well?
For example, Germany and Austria may do better in longer time games with more negotiation time, as negotiation is more important for them comapred to, sat Turkey. Curious to hear thoughts on this, and if anyone has any evidence regarding this.

Site slower or is it my server?
It seems to me that the site has become slower of late. For example writing a message and then posting it in a game as well as shifting from one game to another.
Is it maybe my server (and how do I tell - remember I do not speak geek)?
