Supporting a hold on a unit ordered to move
as an insurance policy so to speak. If I'm trying to move, but get blocked by another unsupported movebut see the possibility of a 2 on 1 against my current position, can I support a hold on it so that he wont get disloged in the case of a 2 on 1 attack?

My opinion is that the support hold order should be ignored if the piece is trying to move.

does a Double supported supporter require a supported move to break support?
I want Naples. I have fleets in Ionian and Tyrr. Naples has support from Rome, and is giving support to rome, and rome has additional support from Tus.

So to be clear, here are the defenders orders:
Nap SH @ Rom
Rom SH @ Nap
Tus SH @ Rom

My question is, since Rome is doubly supported, does a single attack break his support of Naples? or does it take a supported move into Rome to break the support to Naples?

In other words here are the attacking orders:
Ven Move to Rom (intent is to break support)
Ion Move to Nap (intent is to capture)
Tyr SM to Nap From Ion.

Will it succeed?

Glitch?
In game id 5355, all my orders seem to have beenconverted to holds. I'm almost completely sure that I finalized on time, but I could be wrong. Is there any way to confirm what the adjudicator recieved or some other way of checking to see what really happened?
This doesn't really matter that much, of course, but had the orders that I thought I placed gone through, I would have captured two sc's. If it's too much of a hassle or not possible, then nevermind. Thanks!

Question re game maps (small versus large link)
Is it possible that the small map does not reflect all the orders given?

If you refer to game 5495 (d'Artagnan-2), the small map does NOT reflect the support coming from Trieste for the unit in Budapest. The large map (correctly) does.

The history is reflected correctly (showing that support was given) and the game was adjudicated correctly (the support was instrumental in Russia holding onto Budapest).

Defeating your own unit- possible?
What happens if I hold with one of my unit, and then move to that territory with a second unit, which is supported by a third?
Will the lost the fight and be forced to retreat, or it is just not possible and the move order will not succeed?

Question re what if you updated orders but failed to finalize them>
If you've updated your orders but for some reason failed to finalize them prior to the clock running out, what happens? Are the update orders executed or does the system revert to 'hold's for all units?

I believe it takes two seasons with no submission of orders to constitute civil disorder. Would the above (updating but not finalizing orders) constitute the first season towards civil disorder?

Suggestions?
Hey!

This is my first time setting up on php Dip, and because I can draw fresh impressions of it I had a suggestion or two. Sorry if these have already been put forward...

1- It would be great if those nice little colored tabs that display your games and if you have mail came up on every screen once you're logged in.

2- It would also be wonderful if the game clock was more prominently displayed.

I love the interface so far! thanks!

retreats and adjustments in Fall
I am new to the system,
when there are retreats in the Fall on this system,
do you get to see where the retreats went before you build/remove?
are retreats posted?
It seems in my game A3 England has a retreat out of Holland but the game is calling for my builds and does not show if the English fleet was ordered off the board (OTB) or
what. I am not sure if this is a bug or my own ignorance of where to look other than the history for where the retreat was ordered.

Multi-accounting?
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4989 (The Borgias)

Ekabar has taken over Russia - a more or less hopeless cause. After a closer look at him though it appears that he's only played in one game - this game.

Beyond that he has conveniently logged off 3 minutes after Caedus - who is France.

I believe that Caedus created the user with the sole purpose of controlling two characters in this game. The fact that they both have similar nonsensical names, are logged on at similar times and one of them is only in one game seems to support my theory.

This Forum
I am not very web savvy but it appears to me that this forum is very awkward to find anything and to use.

Is there anything that I am doing wrong and maybe there is a better way to view this forum.

Actually, this has been a topic of much discussion on the forum. Many people have suggested that the forum be divided into sub-topics, but I don't think anyone really cares enough to put the effort into it. I think it's just something you have to get used to. :)
This is a topic of much debate at the moment. Truth be told, it's an issue that we'd like to handle, but we just don't have the time. My first preference would be a simple-machines style forum.
That's the message I've been getting, please correct me if I'm wrong.
This may be a stupid question, but you're not actually Edi Birsan are you?

Maica (145 D)

The forum is the democracy of information. by posting, people decide what comes to the top of the list. Also, it provides quick response time to peoples inquiries. I dont think too many people would go under a tab about diplomacy questions. You would be more likely to pass over that since it's not right in front of you, you go out of your way to see it. These are just my opinions. I like the forum and so I am biased to changing it
WhiteSammy (132 D)

i actually like the forum
the only thing that i would like would be a button that takes you to the end of a post bc the threads that have over 100 posts take a fair amount of time to get to the end

I like the forum too. It's easy to skip over what you are not interested in. It's easy to see whether there's anything new since you last checked it.
flashman (2274 D(G))

...and it is a Dip site, so structured/divided fora to allow for multiple topic classification is rather missing the point.

We would end up with resident trolls etc who never even played the game.

This style will make it much harder if the place becomes any more poulated. I do like the linear scroll-down aspect of it though.

I think that making three subsections would be easier for everyone. An "admin requests" section, A "Diplomacy related" section and a "General" section.

Admin requests for draws, multi-accounting, and meta-gaming. Allowing a moderator to analyze everything faster and more effectively.

Diplomacy related for rule queries, tournament-related posts and game ads.

General for all the politics/theological/philosophical posts that are done for entertianment but ultimately get in the way of everything else.

I'd think it would be relatively easy to code and implement as well - creating three separate forums and adding labels. I'm not a programmer though - am I wrong?

If I could choose 3 features to instantly add to phpDip a new forum would definitely be among them. This forum is incredibly simple and primitive, and even though it has coped well despite being unchanged since the beginning it could definitely use replacement. (This is why we use forum.phpdiplomacy.net for development discussions)

The problem is there's no forum system that integrates in with phpDip; it'd have to be a relatively separate thing which wouldn't fit in with the main site in appearance.

I would accept a patch to add-on a separate forum though, as long as new users here automatically got a new account in the forum, and logging on here meant you would be logged on in the forum.
Chrispminis (916 D)

Well, there was a decent idea earlier of having forum tabs the same way we have chat tabs in-game. I liked that idea, though I wasn't sure of some of the forum topics put forward.
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
06 Sep 08 UTC
Also the rank icons which are currently being discussed would be difficult to add to a separate forum, whereas they'd be trivial to add to this one. It's things like this which make moving to a separate forum a more difficult decision, because there's less control
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
06 Sep 08 UTC
Chrispminis: That'd also be a good measure, but ultimately what people expect from a modern forum system (a level of functionality matching phpBB, vBulletin, or SMF) would be too much work to implement here. I don't think incrementally improving this forum system would be a good approach (though a patch for adding tabs would be good)
I quite like the fact that all the threads are viewable in one place. However, an even more brief view (one line per thread) would be good. Also the ability to flag a thread as "Never show me this thread again" would be great.
DeliciousWolf (112 D)

Agree with Maica, I like the digg.com style of the forum where hot topics rise to the top and old/cold ones sink down.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))

OK that basically answered the question, that it is not something that I am doing wrong, which is good since I am pretty far from a techno savvy person.

As for a few other questions...
Yes I am Edi Birsan, but so is my son, but I am pretty sure that I am the only one playing Diplomacy (he tried it and even played in a FtF tournament in Milan two years ago, but he'd rather snowboard the Alps-go figure what do kids know these days).

I do play on www.stabbeurfou.org and I like their system and options a lot.
I am trying to get a feel for the PBeMail hobby between now and next June so I am trying a few games out here (phpDip) and PlayDip and probably a few other of the larger sites to see what is current and keep in touch with one aspect of the hobby that I have stayed away from for a long time with my concentration on FtF play and tournament play.

As for WhiteSammy's comment about rephrasing my posts so that ....
I will try, but I am trying to get in touch with the current mind set on things in the PBeMail forums so that I am a little awkward.
