Teaching New players
I was playing a face to face game where about half the players were new to the game. There was some discussion as to whether it is better to teach in person or online. While I agree that it is easier to demonstrate the rules in person, I believe it is easier to master the rules using something like phpDip where you are told what the legal moves are. My primary reason for this believe is that a number of moves that were written down were canceled because the move was invalid. It felt unjust to punish those players for not having mastered the rules but it equally is important to reinforce that the written orders are of paramount importance and must be written correctly to avoid ambiguity. I am interested what everyone's thoughts are.

I get the impression from your posts that you are an old hand at this game and are very active on the dip pouch site and diplomacy game world in general.
so i was wondering what you think of this site? how does it compare (the players i mean not graphics or code) with dip pouch and other places?
what variations are popular on dip pouch and other sites? we sometimes play no press/gunboat and team (2 or 3 team) games.

just interested in your thoughts.

oh ...and join a game!

Strange coincidences in login times
I am not accusing anyone, but the fact that two players in this game (England and Italy) disappeared for 3 days, with exactly the same last login date and time, and then reappearing 3 days later within 3 minutes, makes me think, what strange coincidences there are in life. :-)

Web Site Improvement Suggestion
Under "Games", there are currently 4 tabs:
Your games
Joinable
Active
Finished

Would it be possible to split "Joinable" into something like "New Joinable" and "Existing Joinable"? "New Joinable" would be games which have not yet started, and "Existing Joinable" would be where you take over countries in civil disorder.

I ask for this improvement since I don't like taking over countries in civil disorder. I find the most exciting time of the game is the first year. However, 90% of the Joinable games are always civil disorder joins and I get frustrated having to sift through them to find new games starting up.

Just a suggestion :)

Game 4322 Error
I cannot open this game, Error triggered: A database lock (4322_map) could not be taken.

The database may currently be overloaded, please try again momentarily..

This was probably caused by a software bug. The details of this error have been successfully logged and will be attended to by a developer.

Unfinalized orders carried out?
I'm sure this has been answered before, but I can't seem to find it. I

n game Move Along Now (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4490) I have for the last two turns observed Austria to have the red X indicating unfinalized orders as the game reported being "Due Now". Furthermore, the game reported that Austria's player was not logged in at that time. And yet Austrian units still acted upon apparently valid orders.

Does the game carry out entered but unfinalized orders, then? I had been under the impression it didn't, but...?

That's funny you went to all this effort. It's something I had noticed upon first encountering Pandora here. They don't consider it plagiarism. In fact, apparently they could very well have written the content you cite. This, more than anything else, is the reason I have dismissed their ideas.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
13 Jul 08 UTC
Sorry, jerkface. I'm not buying it. I, too, briefly considered the possibility that they may have written those diatribes.

If they had, they would have simply provided the links, as I did. All the better to spread the word, no? They promote themselves as these great anarchists, right? Can anybody provide a reason why they would NOT wish us to know about this website, other than the fact that they are lifting it's content and attempting to pass it off as their own?

Also, the aforementioned use of punctuation, and the correct spelling utilized in the plagiarized rants.

They are far too lazy and incoherent to compose any argument of length.

Most of us have moved on from the last few months personal attacks.
You, obviously have taken delight in the fact neither Pandora nor sicarius are around to defend!!

Grow up old man...
It's time for the old to die out and the new to take over.
It's happening all around us...
Are you just old or will you BE a wise OLD man...
Racist to a fault, non accepting and much more, you really ought to focus on the game and not attacks on people.

I have attacked you on occasion, with good reason, and maybe not always justified.
However i accept that fault, and am not interested in attacking you mapleleaf, just defending the rights of those who are away and won't see this before it's archived....

In answer to the original question, I assumed that we were working on the assumption of plagiarism, especially when, a few months back, Pandora kept referring to "her" essays...

Incidentally, can anyone tell me the original meaning of the word plagiarism without Googling, Wikipediaing or the like? The answer is quite interesting...

canute. They ARE around to defend, you idiot. I've posted my views on racism. Ageism is nothing to sneeze at either, jackass. The only thing that those two young people will ever TAKE OVER is a jail cell. I've got at least another ten to fifteen years of work left in me, so excuse me if I don't step aside just yet.

flashman, as usual, is on the money.

Freudian slip? You're out of your depth with that comment, Pandora.

You can own an idea when you come up with it, and publish it. People then cite your work as a reference. It is not even remotely like humming a popular tune.

...Taking (stealing) someone else's work and presenting it under your own name...

It is useful to describe theft of intellectual property. However, my question was about the original meaning of the word.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Plagarism's etymology is from plagiarius, meaning kidnapper or thief, I think, so that's my guess.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Martial I think used plagiarius to mean "literary looter". That is, if my farther recalled correctly from his school days when he mentioned it.

Tucobenedicto- that's what i meant to Mapleleaf when i said that they weren't around to defend themselves... clearly they are.

Chrispminis (916 D)
14 Jul 08 UTC
Ugh. I was actually impressed by 'their' writing, giving them some intellectual credit for having the writing skill to come up with those works. Sigh, only to find that it was stolen. I suppose articles condoning, exonerating, and elevating theft warrants it's own ironic theft. But this latest sleuthing of mapleleaf's really does reduce all credibility and respect I may have attributed to the two. For shame...

And excellent detective work mapleleaf. You may be callous, but you're certainly efficacious. =D
Katsarephat (100 D)
14 Jul 08 UTC
Ah, this explains the lack of any good response to my counterattacks (and those of everyone else). She didn't understand what it said except that it was basically what she would like to say she believes, expressed far better than she ever could.

Well done, mapleleaf.
Chrispminis! You used my favorite word, "efficacious!"

Kudo's to Mapleleaf. I did think that that giant essay did seem a little out of S&P's character. I'd say Mapleleaf's dealt the deathblow in this argument. With the permission of everyone else, I'd like to proclaim him undisputed champion of this bout.
I was actually rooting for Pandora and Sicarius until this; kudos, mapleleaf. I second El_Perro_Artero's notion for mapleleaf as undisputed champion.
Jerkface (1626 D)
14 Jul 08 UTC
Not that it makes much difference to me but I had already discovered this earlier. I, too, used to give some credence to their arguments but discovered very quickly that they lacked the ability to debate beyond an initial statement.

I had an argument with Sicarius about the ethics of reposting previously published material. I say it's iffy, at best, and he says it's totally legit since the ideas are so damn good.
Mapleleaf -

I admit I'm a little late to this party, but it sounds like you are accusing self-professed anarchists of not respecting intellectual property.

Perhaps you should also accuse snow of being white? :-)
flashman (2274 D(G))
