Question about Draws...
If you're playing a points-per-SC game and you draw, do you split the pot evenly regardless of how many SCs you control? Or do you get points proportionate to how many SCs you have?

Newbie Support question
In this game http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4401 I had a fleet in MAO supported by Western Med but it was dislodged by NAO supported by Irish Sea. I would've thought NAO would've bounced as it's 2 on 2. Is it because MAO had a failed move? I thought that didn't matter for defence.

Does anyone else think that points committed into games should feature in the ranking system? Under the current system someone that plays alot of games at once will seem to be lower ranked then someone taking a break even if they are of similar ability.

Favorite Country
I was wondering why people tend to like certain countries over others. From what few games i have played, i have liked Germany and France the best, but it might just be due to circumstance.
Chrispminis (916 D)
05 Jul 08 UTC
The preferences are probably because of playing style. Certain countries are more suited to certain playing styles. For example, a very diplomatic puppeteer might enjoy playing a very central Austria. Some people are more aggressive, while others are more conservative in their playing manner.

I personally enjoy Turkey and Germany. Germany has an exciting central position, though it's much more defensible than Austria's. It's got two nearly guaranteed 1901 builds while not appearing to be the tall poppy in any way, and can quickly lock up and bounce back if rushed. Turkey has an incredibly tough carapace in it's corner position, and after the initial break out it's an exciting race of expansion that makes me fear a rampaging Turkey the most in an enemy.
My favorite is Germany because of the central position and interaction with every other player. Also, a key advantage of Germany is that builds can usually be utilized immediately, unlike Turkey where getting new units to a useful position takes a painfully long time.

I have to misread the question here and say that the only country I despair at starting with is Russia. For some reason, I just do not seem to get alone with all the peasants and that troublesome Holy man Rasputin.

I am very happy with any of the other six.

I dislike Russia, Austria and Germany, and like in order of preference, England Italy Turkey France.

That is because I dislike playing an aggressive nation.

I don't like Italy or Germany much, probably because I'm not one for negotiating with everyone at the same time. Other than those they're all pretty fun
cteno4 (100 D)

I love playing Turkey because it's off in a corner and hard to attack from many directions, yet nearly every (land) territory it can expand into for several years running is a supply center. There's nothing scarier than a huge Turkey in late game, and that's a position I like playing :)

Incidentally, there was just about nothing quite so epic as that one game that I won as Turkey by taking over all of Ynglend's home supply centers...

I've played all except Turkey; I'd have to say if I had to rank them for me I'd say:

Zarathustra (3672 D)

i love playing as germany because you have to power to really use your diplomatic relations to control the game. ive found that a smart german player can control who fights who and when due to its central position and ability to quickly utilize new builds.

i like france and russia because of the ability to play in two spheres of battle lends itself to lots of diplomacy. Even when i am not either of these countries it seems i end up looking to work with them for some amount of time.

I used to hate playing as austria, but now i see it as an interesting challenge of diplomacy and unexpected moves. few other powers can use the invasion on their home SCs to their advantage.

i used to like england a lot, but lately i have found them somewhat boring. i like that i do not need to worry about being defeated very easily. however, its painful to wait to use all your pieces.

ive only recently started to figure out how to play as turkey, but it has always been my most feared opponent. if turkey gets a decent hold, its almost impossible to break
I have had the odd luck to win five games, each with a different country. I am missing Austria and Russia. My order of preference is:
Turkey
France
England
Germany
Italy
Russia
Austria

For some reason I've never liked Germany, it just feels too exposed. I even prefer Austria a little. Favourites are England, Russia and France in that order. England can lead to some really interesting maneuvers and Russia has the benifit of multiple fronts and options without being totally surounded like Germany.
Katsarephat (100 D)
08 Jul 08 UTC
^ Russia can be attacked by England, Germany, Austria, and Turkey right away if they wanted to. Germany can be attacked by England, France, and Russia if they wanted to. And you say Germany is more exposed? (Austria needs two or three phases to cross the border and Germany has ample time to set up a defense, and Austria usually sets up a non-aggression pact with Germany).
destp (2774 D)
08 Jul 08 UTC
I didn't say Germany was more exposed then Russia, only that I find it feels that way. Also, Austria can get a Fall 1901 attack on Munich (especially if working with Italy). On the other hand, both England and Austria need two or three phases to attack Russia. Personal preferences aside, the countries are all pretty well balanced.

I hate playing as Russia, I can never seem to play the right moves when in control of her. She's like a bad luck charm for me >_>.

I enjoy playing as Turkey and France though. I like to have a strong defensive position to fall back on if need be, which Turkey is excellent for, and France is one of the easier nations to launch an offensive from, given the natural choke hold in Switzerland/Piedmont.
Zarathustra (3672 D)

Am I the only one who likes Italy? I always seem to do really well whenever I play as the Italians. Next would be Russia. I hate being Austria as I never seem to last longer than a few turns. Turkey kind of bores me more than anything.
Chrispminis (916 D)
09 Jul 08 UTC
Actually I don't mind Italy. I seem to do better with Italy than I do with most countries. But the start is a little too slow for me, barring a very successful stab on Austria.
krokodil (823 D)

Yeah, I find that its easy to get Russia on your side for a quick stab at Austria. I have yet to see Austria survive an early attack from both Italy and Russia.

I really haven't played enough games in my life to have solidified a list, but as of late I've been especially enjoying games when I start as an eastern power. Does anyone else prefer playing in a different theater? Eng/Fra/Ger vs. Aus/Rus/Tur/even-sort-of-Italy?
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
10 Jul 08 UTC
I am not a fan of England or Italy... they are good defensively, but it's difficult to get off to a flying start. You either have to send all your forces in one direction and leaving yourself very open to another power or you have to sit and wait for opporunties/mistakes from opponents.... and are then typically playing catch-up. Which is worse for Italy if/when he finds himself squashed between 2 naval powers in Turkey and France.

But I guess it just doesn't suit my style.

we had a VERY long thread a few months back about our favourite countries. think the thread got beyond the 100 reply elevel which is only ever been reached by politics/religion or demographic who are you type threads. anyway who won? if i remember right we all voted some several times and at thew end it was ..france,england and ..russia? i know that austria, italy died early in the vote and germany was either loved or hated. does anyone rememeber which country scored the highest vote?
sean (3490 D(B))
10 Jul 08 UTC
or maybe it was turkey that won in the ned, yeah i think it was turkey
flashman (2274 D(G))
10 Jul 08 UTC
I believe it was and I was playing Turkey in a number of games at the time. Someone made the very unfortunate comment that Turkey wins most often (backed with stats) and I then found myself being taken apart by gangs. I did very badly...

In reply to Braveheart, who has made more than one comment on the site about not liking Italy... I seem to get away with a fair number of wins. I think it is because Italy is rarely considered a priority by France and Austria is nearly always preoccupied on her northern and eastern flanks. Thus Italy tends to get a solid start without looking threatening. It can then bend with the wind... Help Russia, stuff Turkey or pick over the bones of Austria.

How is the pot split when the game ends?
Let's say that when the game ends, the board looks like this:

Austria has 18
Italy has 12
England has 5
France, Germany, Russia and Turkey are all dead.

If the pot is 100, who gets how much? What's the formula? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Basically, I guess my biggest questions are:
a) As the winner, do you always get a fixed percentage, or do you get more if more players are fully dead?
b) As a survivor, do you get a bigger percentage if you have more SCs, or do all survivors get the same amount?

Support
If a supporting unit, that is also supported by a third unit, is being attack by only one unit.
Does this attack cuts the support?
Example , Belgium supports Holland.
Picardy supports Belgium.
Rurh attacks Belgium without any support.
Kiel attacks Holland with the support from North Sea.
Is the Belgian support to Holland cut? Does Holland falls?
Thanks.

A French army and an Italian army try to move in the same unoccupied country with no support whatsoever: They both bounce back

But If the army of France was convoyed by a fleet would it be the same output ?

Newb question: When does a country enter Civil Disorder (CD)?
We've got a situation in Metternich6 where both Italy and Austria appear to have made no moves, and are uncommunicative (of course, this could also be some sort of ruse)- I assume not entering any orders for some period causes the country to fall into disorder and allows another player to take over. When does this occur? If CD does occur, can the original player come back and keep playing? Where a player abandons his game and the game goes CD, is there a penalty (especially if that player has less than 100 points)? Lots of questions, thanks for any insights!
