[Suggestion] Alternate winning conditions
vDiplomacy has a way to set up "alternate winning conditions", e.g. to customize how many turns are played and/or how many SCs need to be conquered before a winner is declared. For example, we can have a game of Classic running for 14 turns (Fall 1907).

FFS WHY?
Why does online Diplomacy give me Germany to start with in every single game I sign up for?
Seriously, does it use region-based IP-checking? Because I'd really like to try out different countries and strategies.
And no, taking over Leavers doesn't count because you always get a losing position way past the point of getting a proper strategy rolled out (that's why the original player threw the game)

1v1 Showdown - An Update
110 players entered. After 8 months, 11 are still fighting for the title, and of those 11, just 2 remain undefeated.

That number is about to become 1.

Movement Question
Say Country 1 has units A and B and Country 2 has units C and D. What would happen if A supports B to C, and C supports D to B at the same time? Do the moves cancel out, or does B move to C (dislodging it) and D moves to B?

Diplomacy Puzzle #4 - The Artillery Arms Scenario

This one is an exact scenario from a real, high-level game. In that game, Turkey was able to get into a 3-way draw - can you do the same?

The National Anthem sucks bigtime
Its boring. Musically its trash. This country sucks. Its poor and its disgusting. Our songs are horse poop. The anthem is dull and boring standing for it causes knee pain in elderly people. Posting in this thread means you support Republican views that stem cells are evil but jerrymandering is great

No Build phase
Hey guys. I'm a new user and I'm playing a game with friend (ID is 206642) and I'm wondering if there is a bug or a rule we missed. I'm playing as Germany and I have 6 supply centers, 5 units and no build phase. I'm also curious if the game didn't register a capture of a supply center. I was in Warsaw and then took Moscow the next turn. I captured Moscow and not Warsaw. Can a vet help out some newbies?

Study music recommendations
Hey guys I'd appreciate it if you could recommend music that's helpful for studying. I ( like many) find it difficult to concentrate on immediate concerns like getting physics homework out of the way or starting a paper on whatever subject. I've tried classical music and it helps though some classical music I imagine is better than others for this. If you can recommend artists I'd appreciate it.

Public Press Diplomatic Strategy
I understand Gunboat and FP. What are the objectives of public press diplomacy? Care to share your ideas on what works and what doesn't?

I personally think that Public Press is like one of those great diplomatic conferences of the 19th century. While armies and fleets roam around Europe and a serious struggle develop around spheres of influence, the diplomats in a dark room try to convince the others of their countries' actions...

Which is hard as hell. Public Press is much closer to Full Press in dynamics, only that 1) there is less room for complex maneuvers like the Sealion Opening or the Bulgarian Gambit, so gameplay can be a bit slower and 2) in truth you are trying to convince six other people simultanealy that you are cool and someone else isn't *at the same*.

In my opinion it's Diplomacy's best rule-only variant. It's way faster in both online and Face to Face, and is not a Anglo-Turkish fuc*feast like in Gunboat.

There are a couple of negative points though:

1) The chat can be chaotic. Imagine all possible chat between 7 powers (27 chats!) in a single channel, with the addition of angry French arguing furiosly with the Austrian suggestion of an English fleet in the Channel...

2) The lack of efficient coordination between allies may cause some early stalemates, and slightly empowers the two Wicked Witches. However, one can also argue that the improved balance of power is actually a good feature, but who knows.

^ What?!
Personality is key in this variant. When people are playing seriously (and anon), getting others to like you more than the next guy is the most important thing. As such, this variant lends itself more to RP and stylized text versions than full press. Just look at Balki's Austrian solo in the World Cup. Commanding influence in press, and set the tone by which the whole game's conversation flowed. Do that, along with smart tactics, and you will succeed

This thread gave me an interesting idea, though mentioning it here outs me as involved in an anonymous game. I really enjoy the Fog of War variant available over at http://www.vdiplomacy.net/ . One of the dynamics is that you can often solo without people realizing that an endgame is even close, particularly if you are an outer power like Russia or France. I don't normally like public press at all, but it would add an extra dimension to Fog in that any statement you make is available to neighbors who can see parts of your setup. This allows both raising concerns that otherwise aren't raised in Fog and smart collaborators to jump behind each others' stories. If anyone is interested:

I was Balki’s teammate when he played that game and couldn’t agree more, that was an absolute clinic on how a public press game should be played perfectly and anybody who wants to learn the variant should definitely study that game closely. The finals game was fairly good but by then everybody had already started copycatting that style so was harder to get ahead. Still worth reviewing as well though.
Oh I copycatted the shit out of him I'm the Finals.
Yoak, that's a really interesting idea. I think that would be a very cool game to play. Especially if you end up as one of the corner powers

What about an end year for quick games?
vDip (and so many others sites and apps) has the option to include a fixed end year (like 1907), which is awesomely useful for quick games or tournaments of all kinds.
