Is everyone scared
To even bring up the neo Nazi terrorist attack in Charlottesville today, and the fact that the President made the weakest denunciation of terrorism ever, )except perhaps for his non response to the attacks in Quebec and Minnesota)

And I wonder if the Trump supporters also want to denounce Churchill and FDR for all the violence they directed against Nazis too. I guess they were horrible hate-filled people too

No no Ogion. Dont be silly. Churchill HATED socialism, he hated Fascism, he hated Nazis.

Thats why he did the uber conservative thing : he won the war, and then created a Single Payer healthcare system.

Yes the true paragon of American Republican heroes. What a guy.

Equivocating forceful acts in the name of suppressing hate speech/ideology, with forceful acts in the name of promoting ethnic cleansing. What the fuck, people...

Slight problem with your version of history Dipbro Brainbomb, an inconsistency with the facts. Yes Churchill, a Conservative led a coalition government during WW2. Churchill was prepared to do whatever it took to win the war against Hitler's Nazi regime, and Italy and Japan. He made many notable quotes, including one to the effect that if to defeat Hitler it would require him to make an alliance with the Devil himself, he would do so. And some say in dealing with Stalin he did. One of the ironies of WW2 is that England declared war against Germany when Germany invaded Poland but Poland's freedom was obviously far less important in 1945, when it was under Stalin's rule, and Britain forcibly shipped Polish citizens in Britain back to Poland, including polish pilots who had fought in the RAF in the Battle of Britain.
However Churchill is not responsible for the UK's National Health Service. He lost an election shortly after WW2, and a Labour Party government was formed. That's the Government that introduced the NHS in the UK, and implemented a lot of other "Socialist" reforms, such as, I think, an old age pension, public housing etc.

The Donald says there were "many fine people" marching with the Neo-Nazis.

He is wrong.

If you march alongside people carrying Nazi flags and banners, you endorse them and support their actions. You don't get to be called a "fine person" if you do that.
Churchill was really against the NHS and was a racist. And basically enacted class warfare on those worse off. Makes sense to be a hero to some...
Ogion (3882 D)
16 Aug 17 UTC
Oh, I see. I can see the point. Churchill should have left those poor Nazis alone since he was just as hated filled with his attitudes to socialism. After all both sides do it and there were many very fine people in the Nazi regime.
After all, hating being murdered by racist cops is just like wanting blacks, gays, Jews, to be put to death. Makes perfect sense now.

I guess both sides do do it, after all.

Nor, do you get to be called a fine person if you support white supremacists with your vote in order to elevate them to the highest offices in the land

I'm not sure "Churchill hated the NHS" is accurate. He was very against its foundation, as were most Conservatives - hence losing the '45 election and Attlee's Labour party getting in due to public support of the idea. But Churchill did get back into power in the 50s, and by that point even the Conservatives had conceded that the NHS was a good idea and an overwhelming positive, and were not making attempts to dismantle it.

So Churchill is a great example of how once a single payer healthcare system is set up, even its most ardent critics come around to seeing how fantastic it really is.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)

That's a good point HR. If Churchill was anything, he was a political realist, a pragmatic politician. So when he got back into power after Atlee's government had created the NHS, by then he'd realised the NHS had broad support amongst the population of the UK, and be probably realised that to oppose it would be "political suicide".
It's ironic, sometimes a nominally "socialist" government can implement the reforms that Conservatives espouse better than the Conservatives. The best example of that in Australian political history was the decade of reform in the 1980s of the Hawke and then Keating governments.. ALP governments, Hawke was the former head of the Australian Council of Trades Unions... But his government's managed to get wage restraint, ( after a five year period of high wage growth and high inflation under Conservative government that was very hostile towards unions ) (0in exchange for introducing widespread industry based superannuation, and using tax reform and other policies to improve what he called the "social wage".. And at the same time pushed through reforms that improved productivity, floated our dollar, reduced tariff barriers, opened up our economy etc. His reforms set up Australia for a twenty plus year run of prosperity. It's a pity the decade of Conservative government that followed failed to match those reforms, and wasted a lot of the wealth on " welfare" for the middle class and wealthy and the Corporate sector, building in structural costs to government that are now causing real problems..such as over generous tax concessions for property investors and speculators that have largely caused an overinflated real estate price bubble.
The problem we have now is that the ALP are incompetent bunglers, and the Conservatives are hostage to the extreme right, hence the rise of independent MPs, the Greens, and right wing zealots such as One Nation
I mean, the postwar consensus which carried on after Attlee's government does not change how he felt about it. Conservatives realizing that people liking it, and not wanting to go against the people on a political suicide mission, nor go against the consensus, doesn't mean that Churchill didnt' still hate it. He probably hated it more because it worked well.

I tend to think that politicians don't really love or hate an idea as much as they love or hate how their voters perceive an idea. If it gets votes, it's good, even if it isn't.

Churchill battled the Nazi's with all means. Well, he did what he should. Nazi regime was a crime against humanity. And I don't refer to Jews here. Ask anyone from a European country that had been under their rule and will tell you. My coumtry was occupied by the Nazis for 36 months - from April 1941 to Octomber 1944 - in this period thousands died from starvation and villages were destroyed their population executerd or burned alive. So no question for me, Churchill and all the pther leaders of the time did very well to fight Nazis.
And now Neo Nazis are rising through out Europe, I can think it okay that someone will applause them or praise them. Isn't history teaching us anything?

"Churchill battled the Nazi's with all means. Well, he did what he should. Nazi regime was a crime against humanity." - hang on a sec, Churchill didn't know that any crimes against humanity had been committed until the liberation of the death camps, n'est pas?

I'm not sure what country you are from PW, but i very much doubt that Churchill was trying to save your country from starvation, I suspect he was only interested in protecting his own country.
PRINCE WILLIAM (391 D)

Actually he new, reports were puring in from all directions but especially for the death camps information was so horrible that Allies couldn't beleve them untill liberation, but they knew what happened on occupied countries. And Brittish and N.Zealand troops fought alongside our people invading Nazis.
I accept that firstly he did it for his county but he did well on fighting them.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

When the war started, the invadion of Poland; there had been no death camps. The war was fought because allowing Nazi Germany take Poland unopposed would have meant conceeding any influence and balance of power which had existed. The British and French both wanted that influence to guarentee their safety. So they declared war, not to save the people of Poland, or protect their freedoms (as they clearly ignoring these Poles in the aftermath while Soviet troops deprived them of their freedom), but because of what the invasion of Poland represented for their power and influence.

It may have been sold to the public as being done for reason of protecting the freedom of the peoples of smaller nations, but that propoganda doesn't make it true.

Just like the fact that history remembering the Nazis as great war criminals and the allies (Soviets included) as great war heroes, doesn't mean the allies didn't commit any war crimes (they did). The historic record shows that quite clearly. But how we remember our own history is coloured by whoever won, and their propoganda.
