'War' in Syria?
"The point, of course, is that the West had grown so used to attacking Arab lands - France had become so inured to sending its soldiers and air crews to Africa and the Middle East to shoot and bomb those whom it regarded as its enemies - that only when Muslims began attacking Western capital cities did we suddenly announce that we were "at war"."

Did Soldiers Really Die for my Freedom?
Last week was Remembrance Day, and aside from the self-righteous pomp and circumstance that usually accompanies the event, I was also subjected to hearing about why I should care about the "sacrifice" of others. Apparently soldiers died for my freedom.

please cancel game 163772
Please either cancel the game "Official Europe Game IV" (id=163772) or at least eject me from it.
It has been paused since July and annoyingly keeps appearing in my dashboard without any way I can leave, hide or remove it.

Any interest in a Mid-Level GR (500-800) Game? Semi-Anon, WTA, FP
Taking the lead from the 50 GR thread, I wanted to set up a game or two for players that I could fit with. Say a 25 D bet, WTA, 24 hour phases?

NHL All-Star Game
So the NHL has announced a 3-on-3 format for the All-Star Game this season. I believe this format devalues defensemen in that, in a 3-on-3 match, both sides will field a center and 2 wingers to increase scoring chances at the cost of solid defensive play. The NHL has a long history of great defensemen, so I don't believe it is fair to devalue them by devaluing their usefulness in the All-Sta Game (ergo, less All-Star appearances for defensemen versus scorers).
Thoughts?

Modern Diplomacy favors Turkey

I've looked at most of the active games, including a few i'm in. I noticed that in almost every single one of them on Modern Dip II, Turkey is always winning at the end of the game. Has anyone ever seen Turkey get wiped out?

turkey needed for gunboat
Well apparently some players in a game entitled to encourage a lack of CDs want to play on with a banned player, so we need a replacement turkey. The position is more decent if you consider the necessary allegiances in place given the position. It'd be a fun challenge to make something of this and far from impossible.

Lusthog?
What is it, and is it legal in the U.S?

Before HDV, I hated when gunboaters would use the draw vote to make and confirm in-game alliances. As a way of not having to deal with it I suggested a variant where voting to draw was prohibited until a stalemate line is fully formed and held. Fortunately, some people liked the idea and they've been getting played every now and again since. I actually thought that HDV would have killed off Lusthogs, but that obviously is not the case.

I'm in the US legally.
I think Lusthog is WTA by definition, in addition to the rules on draw votes.

^ yup. The other thing I like about it is it forces things to be played to the end. I'm sure most people who've played enough games have been in one where you get through a bunch of years and there's five roughly equal powers left that are so spread out that none of them has a clear path to solo. Instead of those games getting drawn, you have to play it out.

So here's my theory, which I have espoused on the forum before:

Lusthog is inherently different from HDV. With HDV, you still have a visual cue that draw votes *may* be posted. The idea of a draw vote still influences your play. With no visible votes or voting cues present, I think it creates a game where it is more difficult to coordinate and it places a greater emphasis on good gunboat skills rather than good drawing skills.

Are there any limitations on how many countries can be involved in the stalemate line? For example, we have a 16 SC Turkey who has been stalemated by England, France, and Russia. Would everybody then be obligated to draw, or is the expectation that players continue to be eliminated until there is either a solo or a 17-17 split?
The remaining powers would draw stalemate lines between themselves.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

If a stalemate is reached, usually we draw. However, I don't think there's a strict rule against a nearly-winning player withdrawing so the others can eliminate the weaker players.
trip (696 D(B))

I never really made any hard rules for the end game, but I see it as once the stalemate is reached and held on the side defending against the solo, the game ends, so thinning players out must be done before that point. I guess the solo threat could back off the line, but the other side is under no obligation to thin the draw.
