Is there any talk about how GR integration will handle absent players? 5 months and then you're off the GR?

It's been 3 or 6 months at various times. Not sure which one is current.

Valis: it's currently 3. We haven't discussed the cut off much - though I'm not even sure we need one. Why not have all players listed?

I feel like any multi-player ranking system assumes that, for some non-zero rate, the players are interacting with each other. If a player has left the site or is not playing, it's odd to have them ranked.

It's not like we're stripping their GR from them if they ever return.

The difference between ranking and rating should be distinct I believe.

Maybe it would be better to not remove players who are in any active games (running, non-paused games).

Note that many many games on the site run for longer than 3 months.

Actually, that's interesting - removing players 3 months after they finished their last active game would incentivise people to be always playing games. And that's good for the site.

Most certainly I feel that the actual delineation for active vs non-active can be changed. Both 6 months and Still-Playing seem to have merit. That's probably something for someone with access to the data.

It shouldn't be about shaming players who want to take a break (which is why GR doesn't necessarily deteriorate)(and many high level players refuse to play too many games so they can put forth 100% in the ones they do play), it's about GR being causally related to your performance against others, and if one is not performing against others the idea one has a certain GR is less understandable.

I believe that GR is based on ELO. Basing it instead on Glicko seems to solve this problem, though it may be a lot of work to change.

Mendax: Only loosely. In Elo, losses are scaled by your rating vs your opponents' ratings. In GR, there is no such scaling for losses - in each game, each defeat "costs" the same for each player, regardless of their relative rating.

When we look at integration of ratings into webdip, all ratings systems will be a similar amount of work - so it would be a good time to look at alternative systems. Suggestions welcome, everyone, but no promises.

Hey, I'm almost in the top 2000! On a note that's actually slightly impressive, I'm apparently 59th best in the column that lists the difference in our GR of last month's and this month's.

I believe I've talked about how I'd do ratings with you previously (rate each game 6 times for each player, one for each opponent, using glicko as the rating system to produce a four-figure rating).

I agree with Valis. The ranking should be made up of some variation of recently current players.
Primarily because the level, skill and variety of players change. I would say something like must have played a game in the last 12 months.

Course Zultar would need to play one now and then....

Another month in the top 500 :). Apparently I've got my highest ever rating... Good time to consider retirement!

@dyager, the limit's currently shorter than that. Zultar's only on there because he quietly won a game to test preview mode.

As a layman - would it be terribly difficult to do it based on 'last time logged on.' I think that solve the issue of games taking several months to complete.

That leaves people like YJ, Zultar, and jmo up forever though.
