The king is dead game 2 and 3
I've decided to make 2 more on the American and modern diplomacy maps. The rules will be the same as in the last game, so to review it there will be 4 different roles, the king, the knights the rebels, and the traitor/ traitors. Rules continued below.

What are the most impressive ones you've seen, measured by number of supports, or number of players involved, or number of different incidents in a single turn etc.? If you link a game, please name the turn when it happened!

Just a reminder where Vaftrudner's WebDiplomacy stats can be found.
http://www.draugnar.com/vaftstats/

I don't know when he last updated them, although it looks like May of 2012. But for those interested in the various openings, how often they are used, and what their rate of success is, here you go.

Remember When Obama Helped Disarm Ukraine
http://tinyurl.com/py3cndf

Ahhhhh, good times, good times. Remember when Obama helped secure $48 Million to help disarm the Ukraine? Remember when he started disarming the US? The hollow sound you hear from the White House these days is the empty sheath where our sabre used to be...and Putin is laughing his ASS off...

Diplomacy Statistics
I know everyone has their favorite country/countries, but I was wondering what is the country most statistically likely to win. Is there any way to calculate that from previous webdip games? Other than slogging through each and every one?
COTW (836 D)

according to the stats page on Vdip, France and Turkey are the most successful.
KingCyrus (511 D)

Really? I wouldn't have guessed Turkey.
LakersFan (899 D)

Unless turkey is pounced on by a swift Lepanto alliance, or Russia really insists on trying to attack them all game, they can generally do decently well to start the game. If they can get to the midgame with 6-7 sc's, they become very tough to knock out of their defensive position.
Russia is the most likely nation to solo.
KingCyrus (511 D)

But they are also hard to grow with. They are darn near impossible to dislodge, but they have just as hard a time growing.

Where does that stat come from goldfinger?
I forget. I think Tru Ninja did it? Check his profile, it might be there.

If I recall correctly, the order goes Russia, France, Turkey, Germany, England, Italy, Austria - in terms of winning percentages.

KingCyrus: There has been a lot compiled already in regards to Diplomacy game statistics, even from data dumps of webDiplomacy statistics. Don't waste your time working from scratch.
KingCyrus (511 D)

@JECE, I figured someone had done it, which is why I am asking
Tru Ninja did a really good analysis a while back (circa 2011, roughly three years ago now actually!). I've still got copies of it; PM me your email address and I'll send it over. Should give you a pretty good start.

From my own experience:
- Russia is the most likely country to win
- Turkey is the most likely country to win OR be involved in the final draw
- France and England aren't too far behind Turkey
- Germany has a respectable win rate but mediocre win + draw rate
- Austria and Italy are well behind the pack in terms of win rate AND win + draw rate

Countries can roughly be split into two groups: the "Sturdy" countries (England, France, Turkey) who have an elimination rate around 35% and the "Frail" countries (the rest) who have an elimination rate around 50%. Of these "Frail" ones, Russia is the only one who has a fourth center and thus compensates for its frailty with a high win rate.

The one takeaway is that corner positions = good, center positions = bad.

OK, thanks for the info!

KingCyrus: Yep, but I didn't/don't have time to do the research to be more useful. You should be able to ask for an updated data dump from somebody should you want to use updated statistics. Basic statistics are stored somewhere, although if I remember correctly from discussions about the study President Eden is sending you they can be hard to work with if you want to throw out games corrupted by banned players, 1st-turn NMR's, etc.. For statistics outside of webDiplomacy, Google searches should help you. Records of games have been kept for at least half a century and these records have been analyzed statistically for strategy articles for just as long.

Other statistics you might be interested in are here:

http://www.draugnar.com/vaftstats/

and here:

http://forum.webdiplomacy.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1176

That last link includes a link to an SQL dump of the movement from games, if that's a thing that interests you.

I haven't seen TruNinja's analysis, I'll send you a PM, PE.

Great stuff guys, thanks a bunch!

I have glanced over Tru Ninja's work, and it is really good stuff! It tracks just about everything.

If you're interested in stats on variants, vdip does a decent job of logging them:

Some backstory for your review...
So, I am working on creating a new strategy game and, as we al know, there is more than just game mechanics to create a good game. If there weren't, we would be playing Diplomacy on a perfectly balanced board with some kind of geometric map, no a Map of Europe set just prior to the events of WWI. The following is the backstory for my game. Comments are more than welcome.

The Ukrainian People
So, we've been hearing a lot about the "will of the unified Ukrainian" people lately. Here's my provocative question: wouldn't the separation of Ukraine into two countries be the best for the Ukrainians? Look at these maps:

I wish there were a way to separate real draws
As a newbie, I've started a lot of low stakes games, which frequently end up in draws when we have lots of CDs. I wish there were a way to distinguish those draws that result when a solo effort fails. Sadly, people rarely are interested in cancelling

Scoring?
How are games scored here? If there is a draw, do all players involved score the same, or do we get points for how well we place? Similarly, if a single player wins do the survivors get points according to their final position?

What's the polite way to say buzz off?
In a couple of games I've had another player pestering me for an alliance. Unfortunately, it was someone I had already decided to fight (you gotta fight somebody), so I tried to ignore them.
But I don't want to be rude, and I don't want to explicitly say, "I'm going to send my troops to kill your children, steal your cows, and perpetrate tax fraud."
Is there a nice convention for saying, "I do not want an alliance with you at this time"?
