Convoy question
If an army is being convoyed into territory A by a fleet in sea B and is supported into A by another unit, what happens if a fleet in Territory A is supported into Sea B?

Do they bounce because of equal force, or does the fleet from A dislodge the fleet in B before the convoy is successful?

high-level gunboat - any interest?
I'd like to play a game with, say, folks who are in the top 50 gunboat players according to the ghostratings. Would we be able to put a game together?

A prealliance WW1 mock?
Does this sound balanced or does it need work? Obviously it doesn't require actual diplomacy but I just wanted to think about the map and how well it correlates to WW1.

"Tax breaks are often considered to be a subsidy. This requires the assumption that a person's or an entity's money belongs to the government. Like other subsidies, they distort the economy; but tax breaks are also less transparent, and are difficult to undo."

This is from the Wikipedia page on subsidies and explains exactly why tax breaks are not a subsidy. Your money does not belong to the government.

CAPT Brad, i am all for everyone believing what they want. So i encourage you to continue living a republican life; all i ask is for an open mind and an acceptance when our democratic institutions vote for an idea. As an example, i am personally against laws that limit individual freedoms. But if tomorrow congress passed a law that did limit those freedoms (so long as it was done correctly and with some form of compromise) i would accept the new reality, begrudgingly. This doesn't imply i wouldn't speak out to my rep but it does mean i wouldn't actively encourage my rep to not compromise on something else. Enjoy being a Republican my man, ill enjoy being a moderate, im sure someone will enjoy being a libertarian, and another a democrat.

Also fuck you brad ;)

I am not against democracy. I just see the party that uses that name here in California to be anything but a self-centered mean group of dishonest office holders. And suck on a car wash vacuum Byron!

Democratic supermajority in California has turned the economy and budget around. Republicans can't claim any credit as a stunted minority.
JamesYanik (548 D)

@JK

yes because California was as red as a Quentin Tarantino film during the 08-12 budget crisis.

bullshit aside, California (and Democrat) economics are as such: high taxes to fund everything, and then when the business cycle starts to contract, the newly defunded programs create a domino effect that make the economy much worse than it would have in the first place.

due to the high regulatory and tax burdens businesses take a while to regain investment, but as usual high government investment and subsidies bring companies up until they're surging with economic growth... and clearly back on the boom bust track

the reason why california recovers better than most is due to large sunk costs by bigger companies, a decent agricultural base, and it's got a brand behind it.

California is great for economic activity... not as much for long term economic health, and they also have a few solvency issues compared to the national average... PLUS growing economic inequality, but sadly not the "rising ride" kind.

but some people actually LIKE the boom bust model. personally it seems crazy to me... and it's even more obnoxious talking to Californians about economics while they're on an expansion cycle. they pretend they're gurus who can do no wrong with the economy.

just wait until the next bubble bursts and they'll shut up quick enough.

Well, if you aritifically and ignorantly pretend only cash payments are subsidies, then nothing gets subsidies. Because the supposed subsidies for renewables are all tax credits and loan guarantees as well, so by your defnition renewables don't get any subsidies either! ta da!

Meanwhile actual economists (like the ones I cited) include all federal spending in support of the industry as subsidies (correctly). And that doesn't even get into the environmental subsidies resulting from the MASSIVE externalities.

And if you want companies that make a profit, don't invest in emerging tech. Duh.

And we are not years away from bieng competitive with gas and coal. Neither can compete with 3.5 cents per kWh, which is the current record for solar. There's a reason why something like 70% of new generation being installed is renewables. It's because it is way cheaper. Hell, gas literally has to pay people to take its power sometimes.

As usual, there's no point talking with conservatives, because all they do is shovel out fake facts.

ooh, wikipedia. Did you edit that first? Taxes are owed, and when yout get a tax break it is a distortion and a subsidy. This libertarian bullcrap about "money owned by the government" is so stunningly ignorant I don't even know where to begin. And really, waht would be the point> You doubtless don't have the brain power to understand anyway.
Ogion (3817 D)

@jeff, just wait for James Yanik to start posting his fake facts on the budget situation in California. no doubt he thinks Kansas is solvent too.

It's going to be hilarious when California goes bankrupt. It will also be terrible for every other state in the nation though and we will have to bailout a bunch of incompetent Democrats. Hopefully it will be a wake up call to people though, put Democrats in office - go bankrupt.
JamesYanik (548 D)

@Ogion

if you think Tax Breaks and subsidies are the same then you REALLY need to take an economics class.

they are not the same by mechanism of redistribution

they are not the same by their economic impact

they are not the same by the political principles behind them

and the way you're portraying them to be the same makes me really worried that you don't understand economics

@Manwe

here's the most recent report i've found, and solar is beginning to edge out Natural gas even. currently the construction costs favor natural gas but the crossover has begun.

i suggest you check it out (sorry Ogion hasn't provided links)

um... no. Kansas is not great with cash solvency at all... which i assume you are referring to

do you KNOW what the differences between cash/trust fund/long run solvency are??? because i'm not sure what metric you're using when you just say "solvent"

and... i don't think you do either

Yeah, boom and bust like Texas with oil. Yep.

No, the real thing is that Californians just roll with the changes. We can handle it. It's always Texans or someone else who tries to hold up California as an example of what is wrong with America. They all seem to forget that California *IS* the American Dream.

EUREKA! I HAVE FOUND IT!

@on a more technical point for those following at home, yes, when taxes are levied, you don't have a right to just keep that money and, in fact, as a matter of law, the government does own it and if you keep it, you go to jail, like a thief.

Ownership is only a social construct and in the US you only own something as a matter of law. So when the legal status changes, the ownership does.
