Convoy question
If an army is being convoyed into territory A by a fleet in sea B and is supported into A by another unit, what happens if a fleet in Territory A is supported into Sea B?

Do they bounce because of equal force, or does the fleet from A dislodge the fleet in B before the convoy is successful?

A prealliance WW1 mock?
Does this sound balanced or does it need work? Obviously it doesn't require actual diplomacy but I just wanted to think about the map and how well it correlates to WW1.

I think its a shame when we as a forum get bogged down by real world arguments and issues. At our heart we all enjoy the game of diplomacy and we are here for that reason. No one wants to be called a bigot or a tyrant; but honestly when you read the posts on here it is sometimes hard to define who exactly is the "bad guy". Yes the conservatives and right-wing members have their veiled sexism, racism, and xenophobia; but the liberals and left-wing members often come across with a superiority complex, and bigotry that rivals that of the most extreme branches on the right. The sad truth is, this forum like many things in the world today, has becomes so divided that we can no longer enjoy our free time without the incessant hum of never-ending debate, justification, and hate. Today i watched 2 members who i respect as players of diplomacy and overall fun people argue to an extent that did little to improve either of their images. And while many will attribute the issue to one of these 2 people, it is ultimately the fault of us as a community for breeding a forum that encourages violent rhetoric, and hatefilled debate.

I am not suggesting we "ban" political discussion; as i like to imagine we are mostly educated individuals, but those of us who take our joy from healthy discussion and an enthralling game of diplomacy should take a few steps back and decide if we want to drag the misery and drama of the world around us into what should be a stress-free game.

And i know many of you will call-out my trolling; and that is a fair assessment. Maybe i do fuel the fires a bit, but my intention is usually to bring levity to otherwise frustrating situations. To help alleviate what i perceive as the pending degradation of civility and the status quo.

Many of you wont have made it this far and will likely post some ad hominem but let me make clear that my motivations are simple. I do not want to see the people i respect and the game i enjoy ruined by violence and aggression.

Well said.

In the UK there is a huge, ongoing debate about Brexit. Those in favour of remaining, like me, are often vilified by those who want to leave the EU, and vice versa. Reflecting on this over Xmas, I realised that both sides want the same thing, the best for our country. Our difference is how to achieve that. So, I made a resolution to be polite, to ask questions, to try to understand the other sides position, and so on. Since then I have had a few informative exchanges with Brexiteers that have helped me understand that the ones who are prepared to articulate their views are vaguely rational human beings (emphasis on vague), but the majority are a bunch of fuck-wittingly stupid loons who would trash the economy in exchange for a meaningless "taking back control".

Share the love.

To be honest, the impacts of racism, homophobia, and sexism are severe. These aren't quaint little attitudes, they're incredibly harmful to real people. So, I am not shy about claiming moral superiors to those who engage in those or defend those. It isn't like a policy preference. It is about hurting innocent people.

I have a similar feeling about climate change. You don't get to just make up your own facts, and where you push a position that is going to kill billions, then I'm going to think of you as a close cousin in depraved indifference to Nazis. Again there are consequences to these things and I hold people responsible for the harm they do

@Ogion I do not disagree and in the real world when I'm on a bus or in a store and encounter it I stand up for what I believe. But in the digital world the efforts are almost voided by the anonymity. there is no pressure to change, and no accountability for anyone's errors (because yes liberals can often times overlook reasonable data for their own reasons just like conservatives). When we lash out in "defense" of our ideals and what we perceive as reality we inevitably cause more division than we correct falsehoods. It's futile. I'm not saying we shouldn't have discussion and debate but we need to be more aware of how the conversations and debates are forming and try our best to keep them civil. So that in 2 - 4 years we can still have this amazing site with its diverse community of players to fill our free time. Because whether we like to believe it or not, the loss of active, contributing, productive members of our gaming community will inevitably hurt this site whether those players are conservative or liberal or moderate or socialist or fascist or communist or gay or straight or make or female. I am sure Demon Overlord approaching the game from a females perspective has interesting angle I've never considered when playing. I'm sure Zmaj even as belligerent as he may become has some useful insight into an opening strategy I've never considered and too lose any players with either of their possible contribution because we couldn't just be civil is a shame. That is my argument. Be civil in debate; not cease all debate.

I want everyone to take the Paris accords as an example:
Liberals:
-Clinate change is real we have X data (true)
-This deal was meant to control climate change (true)

Conservatives:
-This deal hurts American coal and oil workers (true)
-This deal adds an expense to our national budget we can't afford (true)

At the end of the day the issues at the heart of each side aren't in conflict. They can be easily compromised if we stopped approaching things from a this or that but never both standing.

Why couldn't we stay in the Paris accords, use the resources we helped find to develops clean energy factories and plants in communities most impacted by the loss of coal and oil. Try to mitigate the losses as best we can while also tackling a problem. It isn't that we couldn't it's that our division won't allow us to compromise. .
slypups (1889 D)

@CommanderByron
Liberals:
-Climate change threatens billions of lives worldwide (true)
Conservatives:
-We don't care, let them die as long as we make a bit more money today (true - you can make a bit more today)

This is why liberals are disgusted with the conservative perspective. It amounts to killing people in the future for money today. It's morally corrupt. I'm sorry, but I won't approve of selfish economic gain at the expense of people's lives in the future.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
20 Jun 17 UTC
@sly - another way to look at it is that one side is worried about the lives of people today (I.e "my constituency now has a 50% unemployment rate because coal was the biggest employer in my area") while the other is concerned with the lives of people in the future.

Neither is inherently wrong you perceive the other as wrong because you are on the opposite side. Now I'm not defending the idea that we do nothing about climate change but I am defending the reality that all governments and recent social interactions spend too much time vilifying eacithers stances rather than take meaningful steps toward compromise.

Ogion (3817 D)
21 Jun 17 UTC
Actually, Cb. Both of your points are suspect. Certainly the second one is demonstrably false. The green climate fund contribution by the Us is $3 billion. The pentagon budget is $598 billion. Yeah, we can afford it

As to the coal jobs, that may be true but the impact the overall job picture is very positive. Solar employs vastly more people than coal, but somehow those jobs don't count
Ogion (3817 D)
21 Jun 17 UTC
Again, progressives have facts, conservatives dont
Ogion (3817 D)
21 Jun 17 UTC
And yes, CB, we can't compromise, because any solution proposed by liberals is automatically opposed by the right regardless of the merits. Look at Obamacare, which is a heritage foundation proposal implemented by a Republican governor and GOP presidential candidate, yes Republicans hate it even though it is their idea! Compromise is not possible because one side opposes compromise for the sake of opposing compromise

@Ogion

"Again, progressives have facts, conservatives don't"

except when it comes to the regressive scientific attitude towards nuclear energy

and in the idea that sex and personality have no scientific connections

and when they ignore basic economic empirically proved facts concerning economic inefficiency in government and capital flight.

and when they pretend that the written doctrine of the written quran and hadith have zero connections to both terrorism and modern theocratic thought in the middle east

and when they pretend all white males have created a giant white supremacist federal state... that may not have any actual laws but trust us it's totally a real thing

and how Trump's immigration ban specifically targeted muslims, when it never once mentioned any religion in its text, stilled allowed for over a billion muslims to come, and never actually gave extra benefits to christians.

and also how they claimed for months that Trump was had these secret Russian ties... with zero evidence STILL for any of those claims

but other than ALL that and more... sure you guys have the "facts"
ND (879 D)
21 Jun 17 UTC
Actually @Ogion, Progressive Democrats don't have facts but Conservatives do.
Capt Brad. I don't like playing the World Diplomacy map cause I am a Noob. I've only played it twice. Do you mind if I use any of the other maps?

CommanderByron (801 D(S))

@Ogion- I'm not saying I agree with conservatives but their points aren't empirically false. The deal does cost money. The deal does cost jobs. Now to a coal miner in WV or their representative they don't care that you added 8000 jobs in New Mexico. They want to know how you'll add their job to their community. So a reasonable compromise invests in green energy in communities that experienced the most loss from a reduction in coal production. Further compromise could be to encourage the US military to invest atleast X% of its budget toward renewable energy and how to weaponize (I use that to include simply powering transport vehicles) green energy. Reducing the US Militaries carbon footprint. There are countless places we can invest / reduce that can be a compromise if done correctly. Both sides want to have it all but honestly don't want to compromise.

Let's stay with the environment.

Liberals often demand we reduce/ eliminate subsidies for fossil fuels. I haven't heard of a liberal willing to compromise there. Example if a republican proposed a bill that would commit the US to reducing carbon emissions by 50% in 30 years; but protected coal subsidies would that bill pass? No. Not because republicans alone hates the compromise but because dems don't think it does enough. That's just the way of the world now. You can't pass meaningful legislation because X and Y are no longer compatible.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
21 Jun 17 UTC
Note I'm a moderate. Not a republican or a democrat. I just think both sides refuse to accept their reality that they are terrible at compromise.
