I am describing a thing, i am not sympathising with it, or celebrating it. I am looking at it from one perspective. It is a pretty fucking important skill, to be able to see things from another's perspective. Even just in diplomacy, you jave to try and see what your potential ally wants and how they are thinking...

But more so when it comes to seeing how politics operates. In the US you have poor working class, but white, americans (who overwhelmingly voted for Trump) being divided and set against the poor working class (non white) american/migrant workers.

My dad's side of the family immigrated to the US after the conclusion of WWl. My great grandfather fought for Germany in WWI. His son fought for America in WWII. My family wasn't considered a threat to national security because they were white and Christian.

Families of Japanese ancestry were rounded up like cattle and kept under 'round the clock watch in internment camps during the same time period; families that had been here for more than a single generation. We turned Jewish refugees away at our shore, ensuring their immense suffering and likely death when the boat returned to Germany.

America has a long history of suppressing those we consider different. Such a shame that in 240 years, we have learned so little from our mistakes.

I can not fathom this argument... If a city wishes to be welcoming to others, and feels it is in their best interest in terms of growth, and state/federal laws don't allow the level of immigration needed - why exactly is it so bad the city has autonomy to accept whomever it wants?

Can we at least fix our immigration system? Like we have all these complaints about illegal border crossings/overstaying visas, which is a fair criticism, but the second you start to oppose immigration in general you get the populist rhetoric of the Trump campaign

I want a better immigration system, but controlling our borders I think should work in one of two ways:

1. have an strong state's rights republic and let the states decide what they want their own border control to be like

2. have what he have now, and say "alright federal gov't give us SOMETHING to work with" b/c immigration system is broken, illegal immigration is incentivized, and b/c of their status they're early exploited.

@abgemacht: small government is awesome, but if there is a federal/state law, cities can't choose to just ignore it. I believe there it was partially covered in like Marbury v. Madison or one of the other old Supreme Court cases we all learned about in school.

First off, most sanctuary cities aren't breaking any federal laws. Second, rather than cheering to see local governments be revoked funding, true conservatives should be repealing the Federal laws that give Ice so much power. But then again, the GOP was never about small government. They just wanted different parts of the government to be big

Sure, I don't know much about sanctuary cities but I assume Miami was allowed to do that under the law? So I don't see the issue here legally anyway.
