WebDiplomacy policy on restarting a game
I'm sure this type of topic has happened before. One of the players in "Friendly Mediterranean Variation" managed to 'ready' without any units being ordered. All units were held. Major screw up. Hurts the balance of the game. We are still kind of discussing the ramifications and what to do about the moves... but is it possible to either fix the moves for him? or restart the game with everyone playing the same countries?

Worst Mistakes in Diplomacy
I'm curious to know what people consider their worst mistakes in their entire Diplomacy career. Is it failing in a guaranteed solo? Messing up a secure draw? Being eliminated when you shouldn't have?

It's the year 2030. Diplomacy has finally taken its rightful place as one of the "big four" global sports, along with soccer, twenty20 cricket, and ultimate frisbee. The first million dollar tournament opens with hordes of screaming fans straining to glimpse you as you stroll to the game board, your walk-on music reverberating through the arena...

What is that music?

Wanted: Thoughtful Discussion
I'm working on a project where I have to document the process of having a discussion with someone whose views I disagree with. The point of the assignment is to examine my own biases, and find ways to address them. So, since I consider myself liberal in most social and economic policy, I'm looking for an open-minded conservative to debate and discuss politics with. If you're interested, shoot me a PM. Thanks.

M20: The Amish Father
The heat of summer drove locusts into the valley. “Another scorcher with those damn bugs again- probably will need that barn up by Sunday Zeke.” Jedediah swallowed a bite of his hand whipped potatoes. The young man Ezekiel glanced down at a phone hidden in his lap, unresponsive. “Ordnung”, said Jedediah, “Do you know what Ordnung is boy?”.
“We do nothing that is not done unto us”. Ezekiel rolled his eyes, and passed the bread while fidgeting to put the phone in his pocket. It was noon in the town of Big Valley, Jedediah had gathered the family for a quick lunch before getting back to the day’s tasks.
“Humility, obedience, and simplicity is the only things you need to know son, you will never learn those traits by sneaking around listening to your headphones and hip hop, or whatever it is called, sending those messages to Troyer and the boys from Mule’s Hill”. Jedediah gestured to his son to try some of the whipped potatoes but no response came from the adolescent. “I am busy all day with lines of patients son, Soltzfuss is doing all the paperwork lately in the harvest and I’m getting little to no support in the fields. This hayfever is driving everyone crazy and I need your help around the house; or maybe out at the new barn”. He put his hands behind his head revealing the sweat beneath his armpits, “It needs a coat of paint, some repairs from the hail damage; maybe you’d like to take Elizabeth out there and you two get some fresh air”.
Jedediah stared at his son and still there was no response. The sound of cicadas buzzing in the summer harvest droned out the silence.

Ezekiel grew frustrated and finally could contain his disappointment no longer.
“I understand what our purpose is father but this town is full of liars. I believe there are better things to do with my day than paint Barns”. Ezekiel stood from his seat, defiant to continue eating, “Do you not see what this place is doing behind your back? Don’t you see how the town is not what it used to be, Troyer-“ He was interrupted as his father stood from his seat.
“I will hear no more of that Troyer person, he is a nonbeliever and his family has disgraced this town”. Ezekiel contained his desire to yell at his father, but his phone slipped from his pocket in the process of him standing to face him. His sisters Mary and Elizabeth were too young to understand.
Mary tugged at his shirt, “Zeke, don’t yell at papa please”.
Ezekiel rolled his eyes again as his father reached for a nearby holy book. Jedediah began to read a passage which was abruptly cut off-
“That’s your solution isn’t it? Just read from some holy book and expect everyone to change?”. Jedediah sat calmly and stared into his son’s eyes. Ezekiel pushed his chair in. “Father if you do not open your eyes to the truth, these vultures will come for you next; that book won’t save any of us”. With that, Ezekiel grabbed his jacket and bolted out the front door.

Jedediah was resigned, but still smiled, and made no move to stop him. He pushed his chair in and walked to the kitchen while urging his daughters to enjoy lunch.
“I suppose he thinks life is just a big game”, he mumbled to himself as he sipped from his flask. “If we lose our traditions, we have nothing left of ourselves”. Something was different from his last sip. A strange sensation came over him unlike anything he had ever felt. He lurched forward briefly feeling the walls closing in around him as a row of pots and pans crashed to the floor. “Come on now Jed, it’s just whiskey, shake it off, you have a busy day ahead” He slapped his cheek and Mary glanced over to the kitchen confused. “Papa what is wrong?”.
With a thud he fell to the ground. Jedediah the Doctor of Big Valley had died.

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions, challenging you to put your Diplomacy skills to good use as you become either 'Town' or 'Mafia' or ‘Ghost’ and analyze, argue, convince, lead, schmooze, lie, deceive, and hoodwink to win with the power of your words.

The Town's objective in the game is to lynch all Mafia members before the Mafia outnumber the rest of the Town. The Town can vote to lynch one player in each Day phase. Remember that mafia members are also part of the Town during the day and may manipulate the lynch vote to their liking.

The Mafia's objective is to avoid being lynched in the Day phases and kill Town members during the Night phase so that the Mafia outnumbers and can thus take control of the Town. The Mafia can vote to kill one Town member in each Night phase.

The Ghost’s objective is to avoid being lynched or killed, while having every living player in the game haunted. The ghost has a vote to lynch one player during the day, and can visit a player every night to haunt.

RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day and post at least twice per game day.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing, or copied mechanics.
5. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game notes.
6. All players are forbidden from cheating.
7. All players are required to play to win.

ELABORATION

0. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios pre-emptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible.

1. All role PMs have been posted in the setup information below, and all players (regardless of alignment) will receive identical copies of the vanilla town role PM. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; after all, the fun of this game is reading people, not outguessing the GM.

2. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average webDip user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

3. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. Only GM endorsed QuickTopic threads can be used for communicating with one another outside of the main game thread; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging.

4. Players who have been removed from the game are no longer playing the game, and will not be permitted to comment on it in private messages or comment threads. A special QuickTopic thread will be opened for individuals who wish to spectate on the game, or players who have been eliminated. Use these channels to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

5. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you are considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, message the GM about it before saying/doing it and the GM will let you know whether it is allowed or not. To Clarify Further, Clause 1. Players may not copy and paste any game related Mechanics
2. Players may not doctor, and create fake game related mechanics 3. Players may not share personal correspondence between GM to player under any circumstances. 4. The GM will not confirm any claims, or adjudicate based upon anything that could easily be sorted out through questioning and evidentiary circumstance.

6. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

VOTING
There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to lynch players in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

The first level of voting is for whom you intend to lynch. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE yoyoyoyoyoyzozozo) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during a lynch vote, no one shall be lynched.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double octothorpes your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The day will end as soon as a majority of the players are voting ##End and are voting the same player. The day will only end if the majority of players are voting ##End AND are voting the SAME person. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their NK (nightkill) targets during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill ND (< b > kill ND < / b >). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the oldest vote will break the tie.

ROLE ACTIONS
If your role has a special action (eg. Roleblocking, investigating, shooting a gun etc) then you may PM your action to all three GM’s. Day actions such as dayvig shots will be processed as soon as possible by the first GM to read this. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point. Mafia night actions can be voted on or selected in the Mafia QuickTopic thread.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section above for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the moderator/admin team, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. (Being in the Observer QT is acceptable). Replacement is not guaranteed.

TURN DURATION
This game’s Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g., hammer). Extensions may be granted at a
moderator’s discretion, but don’t count on it. Phase shifts will be at 11PM GMT, 6PM EST.

GM TEAM
This game’s GMs are Fluminator (userID=59788) and yoyoyozo (userID=666420). PM any of us with any questions or concerns and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. We are sometimes nice people.

THIRD PARTY
1 Ghost of Jedediah

Special Note ITEMS:
There is a pitchfork in the game. One player is in possession (randomly) of a pitchfork which they can use to impale themselves with during the day. This player can be ANY alignment. Committing suicide in this manner will not count as a resignation. They still win with their team. You cannot give your pitchfork away, but it can be stolen. If the Ghost haunts the possessor of a pitchfork they gain control of it and can use it to kill any player at any time in the day. The ghost only has control over the pitchfork if the current owner of it is haunted.
If the ghost is rolled to have the pitchfork in setup, it will be rerolled. The ghost will not start with the pitchfork.

There are two cell phones in possession by two (randomly) determined players who can access their own Cell Phone QT throughout the day and night. The players must post with their WebDip username in it. Beware of what you choose to disclose with this mechanic. The Ghost can learn what conversations took place using the phone if they should happen to haunt you, and the Thief (if there is one) can also read it if they steal a phone. You cannot give your phone item away.
If the Cell Phone becomes haunted the Ghost may post freely (if they want) in the Cell QT under any anonymous name. (They can even try to disguise themselves as one of the people in the phone call). The players will not be notified otherwise.
If the phone gets stolen, the person it was stolen from may no longer post in the QT. The thief can read the conversation but not post in it. The other player(s) in the topic will not be informed.
If the ghost starts with the phone, they may post in the cell qt under any name at any time.
If a mafia starts with the phone, a mafia item thief can still steal the phone from another mafia member.

TOWN ROLES

10 Vanilla Town:
You are a citizen of Big Valley. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be killed at the end of the day. You have no night actions. You win once all mafia members and the Ghost have been eliminated.

0-1 Gelassenheit: You are the Gelassenheit. You believe someone should surrender to God by living in a way that pleases God and by obeying legitimate religious authority. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be executed at the end of the day. During the night you can select one living person. If you die that night, or are killed or lynched the following day, the role of the person you selected will be revealed to everyone in the game unless they are the Ghost. You cannot be roleblocked. You win once all mafia members and the Ghost have been eliminated.

0-1 Pacifist (Governor): You are the Pacifist. Amish are pacifists and conscientious objectors. They avoid all violence - including angry words or going to law. In the aftermath of Jedediah’s death, you have reluctantly decided to join the hunt to find his killers. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be executed at the end of the day. Once per game you may nullify a lynch, keeping the person with the highest number of votes alive. You win once all mafia members and the Ghost have been eliminated.

0-1 Pragmatist: You are the Pragmatist. Amish interpret their beliefs pragmatically. They adapt to the world in order to be able to continue their redeeming life in a pure community separate from the world. During the day you make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. Three times per game at night, you may visit any player. If they are mafia, that player may not post in the maf QT for the rest of the game, or view it. They may still send PM’s of who they want to kill to the GM but they will do so blindly to the rest of their team, any votes received in this manner will count as the newest vote received and the time when received. A new QT will be posted for the other mafia members. You win once all mafia members and the Ghost have been eliminated.

0-1 Cop: You are the Cop from Greene County. During the day you make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. At night, you may choose someone. Unless you are role blocked, you will learn their alignment the following day. You win once all mafia members and the Ghost have been eliminated.

0-1 Gunsmith: You are the Gunsmith. You have stockpiled an arsenal for the people of Big Valley and hope to supply the good Amish folk with a means to defend themselves. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. At night you may select one player to give an active gun to unless you are role blocked. You can do this THREE times during the game. You win once all mafia members and the Ghost have been eliminated.

Mafia Roles
2 Mafioso: You are the Amish Mafioso a member of Soltzfuss’ evil crew! You hope to take control of the town and change it fundamentally to a new order. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your fellow mafia and vote on who to kill. Your fellow mafia members are <Mafia member A>, <Mafia member B>, <Mafia member C>, <Mafia member D>. You win once the Ghost is eliminated, and nothing can stop you from eliminating all of the town players. You may discuss at night with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

0-1 Barber: You are the Barber. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be killed at the end of the day. During the night you may select someone to kidnap and cut off their beard. Anyone shunned in this manner will have their role revealed to you and will be roleblocked, if you shun the Ghost he will be immune to roleblock but his role will be revealed to you. You can do this TWICE throughout the game. During the night, you may talk to your fellow Mafia and vote on who to kill. Your fellow mafia members are<Mafia Member A> <Mafia Member B> <Mafia Member C> <Mafia Member D> You win once the Ghost is eliminated, and nothing can stop you from eliminating all of the town players. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Item Thief: You are a highly skilled lock pick and thief. You have been stealing from the people of Big Valley for years and are one of Soltzfuss’s most revered sidekicks. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be executed at the end of the day. During the night you may choose someone. You will attempt to steal a single item from them. The priority for which item gets stolen in the case they have multiple items is gun > pitchfork > cell phone. At night you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to assassinate. Your mafia partners are <Mafia Member A> <Mafia Member B> <Mafia Member C> <Mafia Member D> You win once the Ghost is eliminated and nothing can stop you from eliminating all of the town players. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Godfather, You are the Godfather. During the day you make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be executed at the end of the day. During the night you may talk to your mafia partners on whom to assassinate. You may choose not to kill anyone. Any scans on you by a cop will show you as being aligned with the town.

Rumspringa: You are the Rumspringa. You engage in rebellious behavior, resisting or defying parental norms. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be executed at the end of the day. Once per game in the day phase you may declare a Rumspringa, and shut down all QT’s and all night actions other than ghost and each mafia privately voting on a nightkill. Your mafia partners are <Mafia Member A> <Mafia Member B> <Mafia Member C> <Mafia Member D>You win once the Ghost is eliminated and nothing can stop you from eliminating all of the town players. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

0-1 Pig Farmer: You are the Pig Farmer OINK! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be executed at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to assassinate. Once per game you may choose to dispose of a body to your pigs, the role of the player will not be disclosed, and there will be no evidence of if they were haunted by the ghost either. You will learn privately of their role via PM at Start of the next Day.

3rd Party:
Ghost: You are Jedidiah’s Ghost, During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be executed at the end of the day. During the night, you may choose someone to visit, the visit acts as a visit by a Doctor; however, that person becomes haunted. Any person actually saved from an attack in this manner will be notified however haunting will not be announced unless the visit actually saves the person. Additionally, any item in the possession of a haunted player will be put under your control. This action cannot be prevented, role blocked, or redirected.
If you are haunting a person with an item, you will be made aware you have possession over the item. (You will be told if you lose possession of the item if the circumstance arises.)
A haunted cell phone lets you gain access to that QT and see all prior conversations. You can also post in the QT under any name. (Including a playername in the topic).
A haunted pitchfork can be used to kill anyone at anytime during the day.
A haunted gun (if a gun exists) can be directed to kill anyone if it is ever shot by the owner.
Additionally; you will not be revealed by the Glassenheit but could be discovered by shunning. One time in the game, during the day phase, you may reveal yourself and become lynchproof and immune for that phase. This must be done at least 10 minutes before the end of day.

Chapter 1: The Fall of Big Valley
When Ezekiel returned he found his father dead and his sisters in the house; and swarms of people offering their sympathy. First came a doctor from another town who had likely arrived earlier that morning approached him and appeared distraught. “I am sorry young man, there is nothing we could do, he appears to have ingested some sort of venom”. Ezekiel had no words. He edged his way past the doctor, avoiding eye contact with the throngs of confused members of the village. The home was surrounded by members of the town by now, a sheriff, and other town elders. Once inside he stared down at his father’s lifeless body wondering what would have happened if he had not run off.

Next came an officer of the county tried to approach the porch and Ezekiel swiftly grabbed Mary and Elizabeth by the hand and fled into the fields beyond the house. Mary and Elizabeth were not prepared for this, and fought him initially as he dragged them onto the trail.

The town was small, and it had just gotten even smaller. There were now only 17 adults living in the village, but one thing was certain: Someone poisoned Jedediah, and wanted him gone. Ezekiel knew his father had not died randomly.

He reached into his pocket to find his phone, but there was nothing. Ezekiel began to panic. He spoke to himself, which confused Mary and Elizabeth as he raced through the old trail past the Orchard; “I have to find Troyer! He has more guns and ammo in his father’s old tool shed, Or I thought he used too.”

When he reached the barn with his sisters he was out of breath. He leaned over to catch his breath, putting his hands on his knees in exhaustion. “You two stay here and I will bring you food, and anything you want, and anything of value from the house when I can. Please whatever you do, neither of you leave the barn do you understand?” Without hesitation he gave Elizabeth a map, and his youngest sister Mary a flashlight. “If anything happens, remain calm. I will come back for you both, I promise”. Mary tugged at his shirt and he turned back. “What! Mary? What?”.
She looked up at her big brother, “I love you zekey please don’t let us die”.

##VOTE Jamie for doing the dumb self vote thing again, making him both the only person who complains about people being allowed to do it and the only person who ever does that.

##GM note.
Oops. ignore the typo start date. It was supposed to be today.
If it throws too many people off I can extend the day.

@ MoscowFleet, you are missing the part after that where the GM says:

" DAY 1 HAS BEGUN – YOU MAY NOW POST! "
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

@ Ghug: I have done that in games when I've been scum, town, and a third party. It proves nothing about my alignment.

Ah, I wasn't aware. No problem, for me at least.

ghug (5068 D(B))

Cause you whine about how people could abuse it and then actively attempt to create the problem so that the complaint is a valid one.

##VOTE ND for pretending to have friends.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
30 May 16 UTC
Well, Ghug, there was no issue in the last game because the GM's applied a (far superior) version of the Must Vote rule.

Anyway, let's not have an argument about the rules.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

Does anyone have any ideas about a Ghost-hunting strategy? I think it would be in everyone's interests to get rid of that creepy ghoul.
ghug (5068 D(B))

^ that's why I voted ND.

@Floodgates who are you? Will you be my friend?
ghug (5068 D(B))

@ Chaqa: How do you respond to Ghug's case against you?
Floodgates (2079 D)

Floodgates (2079 D)

@ghug - I don't even know who I am! I'm happy to have friends!
DemonRHK (100 D(B))

This 3rd party looks challenging, fun, and has the ability to get scary powerful. Kinda sad it isn't me.

I also thought the game started tomorrow but no big deal. I agree the ghost will be an issue but I don't think it'll be a town worry until about D3. They need to actually haunt people and hope the person has items otherwise it's just a tick down on the clock they need to establish. At this early stage of D1 I think I'd like to hear the following from people:

- What is your take on the ghost? Are they a higher or lower priority than Mafia?

- What maf roles are the most important to be rid of?

Also ##Vote reedeer
Floodgates (2079 D)
31 May 16 UTC
Well, the Mafia can't win until the ghost is dead. Does that make it better to just leave the ghost for them to try deal with also?

Webdip has changed so much, back in the day after a mass shooting we'd have a thread within a minute, argue for days and then nothing would get done. Now we just leap straight to doing nothing. I miss the old times.
