Waterways in Fall of the Amercian Empire IV
Playing this variant for the first time and wonder if it is possible in one move to move a fleet from Deep South to Chicago. If this were to work, moving out to Lake Michigan is not possible I assume. Thank you!

opinions;
so you have an excellent ally and didnt plan to stab this turn but your ally has 8 hours left to input orders hasn't spoke to you and looks like he might NMR. do you assume the worst and attack or hope for best and not attack? also assume you will be IRL busy the rest of the game an unable to change your decision if he does return.

Nevada Results
Trump wins big, Clinton, not as big. Rubio takes number 2 as Kasich and Carson fall into irrelevancy.

What takeaways do we have?
JEccles (421 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
It's now a 3 horse race in the Republican tie, and when Kasich and Carson drop out the mad dash for their supporters will see Rubio and Cruz possibly close the gap on Trump. Not necessarily enough to slow the train down yet, but super Tuesday would be huge for those 3 if they can get Kasich and Carson to drop out.
KingCyrus (511 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
Can Rubio or Cruz beat Trump without the other dropping out? I think more people dislike Trump than like him, and if it was either of them against him, they would win.

JEccles (421 D)

As long as it's a 3 person race no, it's going to take Rubio or Cruz dropping out, and honestly I think Rubio might have the better shot than Cruz right now.

@ Chaqa: It's called takeaway in most of Europe.
Randomizer (722 D)

While Trump has a lead, it can easily change in March when the larger states hold primaries. Florida and Texas are home states for Trump's rivals, so he could easily lose ground especially if people get tired of his lies and retweeting information from white supremacy sites.

Clinton just needs to keep her super delegates until she can win in the larger states to force Sanders out.

@ Chaqa: Um.... why? You buy the food in the shop / restaurant, and then you take it away and eat it.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
24 Feb 16 UTC
A takeaway is what you took from a meeting -> your impression. It's weird to apply it to food also, when takeout is more apt - you're taking it out of the restaurant,.

election results continue to further my suspicions that 45% of the US population falls into 1 (or more) of 3 categories: racist, stupid, or selfish. hooray, go america.
Lethologica (203 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
Clearly there wasn't anything interesting about the Nevada results, considering where the thread has gone. No surprise, it pretty much echoed the conventional wisdom on both sides--Trump winning a plurality with Rubio/Cruz chasing, Clinton with a perceived edge over Sanders but no clear victory. Super Tuesday will be our next chance to really shift our priors, unless Sanders does unexpectedly well with minorities in SC this weekend.
Octavious (2732 D)

Takeout is what you do to an opponent or target, or close female friend. Takeaway is used almost exclusively for food in the UK as no one has had a productive meeting for several decades. In the UK meetings are primarily held as a team bonding experience in which people eat a large variety of biscuits and cakes before making excuses and leaving early. There is no meeting takeaway.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)

I avoid meetings. They're like the opposite of both work and leisure. Sitting through a meeting is like some kind of depressing purgatory. Seminars are fine, but meetings are like counting the hours and minutes until death, in slow motion.

I sometimes put fake meetings in my work diary so I can go and hide somewhere and do actual work, without the risk of someone inviting me to a meeting.
KingCyrus (511 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
What are the odds that Cruz and Rubio can hang close enough to Trump that he doesn't get a majority of the delegates?
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
In local government you can assess a person's contribution to the actual work that gets done by looking at how many meetings they attend. The more time they spend in meetings, the more useless they are.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)

who cares, all three of them fucking suck
JEccles (421 D)

KingCyrus, I think the only way we get to the convention without a majority is if there are 2 candidates, Trump and Rubio.

The most surreal meeting of recent months came after head office decided to revamp our internal health and safety operational instructions and reporting system in a dungeon and dragons style format, named "The Book of Sherms". The best part of an hour was spent going through health and safety issues translated into oldie worldie language, with a mighty steed replacing team cars and treasure chests instead of lockers...

I do believe someone somewhere envisioned it as a dynamic and engaging initiative. Only the excellent quality of the Sainsburys be good to yourself range of cookies prevented a mass walkout.
Lethologica (203 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
I disagree with JEccles. No candidate is getting a majority purely on polling, so they have to win more delegates than their polling would normally allow, which means winning winner-take-all states. To the best of my knowledge, the candidates doing well in winner-take-all states are Trump and Cruz. So Rubio dropping out is the path most likely to result in no candidate having a clear majority before the convention.

If all three stay in the race, I think Trump's "ahead of the field" perception eventually turns into additional votes and he gets a majority before the convention. But that's purely speculative.
JEccles (421 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
Lethologica, I based my opinion on Carson and Kasich dropping out, which I think Rubio may get the support of those individuals from, and Rubio's performance in the past two events since NH has been steadily growing. The support he is getting from Jeb and Christie dropping out is helping to propel Rubio, and I think in the long run he will overtake Cruz in winner take all states as well. It's only a few "primary" elections into the cycle, but momentum is starting to favor Rubio from the past couple at least.
Putin33 (111 D)
24 Feb 16 UTC
Nevada was a big defeat for Cruz as expectations were high with his "ground game" and support from the Clive Bundy freaks. Trump was not expected to do well in a low-turnout state like Nevada, and he destroyed the field. Cruz lost the evangelicals to Trump in SC and lost them again in Nevada. I doubt he will do anything to slow Trump down outside of Texas. He needs to win several southern states to have a chance and I don't see it happening.

Kasich is going all-in on the March 15 primaries where the delegate counts are high and the voting population isn't quite as batshit. But he's going to be under intense pressure before then from the RNC to drop out to make way for Rubio. So basically nothing is going to stop Trump because the only hope they have is if this becomes a two-way race very quickly.

As for the Democrats, Nevada showed that Sanders can win Latinos and that he struggles in states where the proportion of elderly is high. Nevada is a Krellin-state, so the fact that he came within 5 is a decent showing. The south is going to be a slog though.
Are write-in candidates still allowed? If so, Mayor Alexander Boris du PfefGOP Johnson of London has dual nationality and is therefore eligible to stand (as a Tory, presumably for the GOP).

Two advantages to this.

1. He's less of a fuckwit than the current candidates.

2. Removes the most charismatic Tory from the UK, improving Corbyn's chances.
Octavious (2732 D)
25 Feb 16 UTC
I hate to disappoint you, but transplant the Tory manifesto to the US and it's overwhelmingly Democrat. I don't think that the Republican faithful would take to a man who describes himself as a social liberal, rarely goes to church, and is pro gay marriage and abortion rights.

Still, a Johnson President and and Cameron PM is a nice dream. Better than the same positions occupied by the Sanders brothers :p.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
25 Feb 16 UTC
Octavious is pretty much correct there. The Democrats, transplanted to Europe, would be seen as a centre-right party.
Putin33 (111 D)

"I don't think that the Republican faithful would take to a man who describes himself as a social liberal, rarely goes to church, and is pro gay marriage and abortion rights."

Depends how much he hates poor people and minorities. Donald Trump was known as a social liberal until very recently, when he suddenly claimed to be anti-abortion. Rudy Giuliani is still a respected figure in the GOP despite his socially liberal positions.

http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2016-02-26/trump-s-12-years-of-audits-very-unusual-ex-irs-agent-says

Trump reveals the reason he hasn't released his tax returns is he's being audited by the IRS for the last 12 years. Claims that it's because he's a strong Christian instead of a shady businessman. The fact they have been doing every year shows that they have been finding errors where he was wrong since otherwise they would have skipped years.

I'm actually more or less looking forward to my first time, even though it's going to be extra tricky since I started a company and need to do that too..
Then again, I made the conscious decision to do something that includes administration by myself so it's just a bit of extra administration for me, while I guess it's more or less the only administration you would be doing?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Feb 16 UTC
By the way, in The Netherlands it's best to always do it even if you don't earn anything, because you might get money as well and if you have to pay money, it's your own responsibility to do it. Basically, you're either missing out on money or technically not fulfilling your responsibility. Exactly 0 is very unlikely.
