Great example I/T
gameID=173452

I am not just showing this because I won, I am showing this because here we have an example of a I/T agreed upon in 1901 that worked out well for both parties (up until the eventual and nessecary stab and solo)

MXVII: THE 76th ANNUAL HUNGER GAMES

In order to instill obedience and justice in the population, the evil Capitol held the 75th annual Hunger Games in an attempt to kill off all the champions. Fuelled by rage, Katniss Everdeen and her allies fought against the system and managed to retreat to District 13. Now, District 13 is at war against the Capitol forces in order to secure safer lives for the people who live in the poorer districts. The Capitol is widely despised for being a decadent city, and wild parties are common. Amongst the political turmoil, one person appears to have partied rather too hard and now has no recollection of who they are. With both sides trying to infiltrate and destroy each other, will Katniss and the rest of District 13 be able to start a rebellion against the oppressive government? Or will the Capitol be successful in crushing the movement before it overthrows them? And is the the mysterious stranger who lost all their memories going to pick the right side to join in the battle? Tune in to find out.

INTRODUCTION

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions, challenging you to put your Diplomacy skills to good use as you become either 'Town' or 'Mafia', and analyze, argue, convince, lead, schmooze, lie, deceive, and hoodwink to win with the power of your words.

The Town's objective in the game is to lynch all Mafia members before the Mafia outnumber the rest of the Town. The Town can vote to lynch one player in each Day phase. Remember that mafia members are also part of the Town during the day and may manipulate the lynch vote to their liking.

The Mafia's objective is to avoid being lynched in the Day phases and kill Town members during the Night phase so that the Mafia outnumbers and can thus take control of the Town. The Mafia can vote to kill one Town member in each Night phase.

RULES

0. The GM reserves the right to adjudicate individual scenarios that arise during the course of the game at his discretion.
1. All players must vote at least once per game day and post at least twice per game day.
2. All players are forbidden from posting screenshots of their role PMs.
3. All players are forbidden from using encryption.
4. All players are forbidden from using non-sanctioned PMing.
5. All spectators and players who have been eliminated are forbidden from posting on all comment threads related to the game notes.
6. All players are forbidden from cheating.
7. All players are required to play to win.

ELABORATION

0. Given a lack of omniscience, the GM cannot create a rule to resolve all possible scenarios pre-emptively. To compensate for this, the GM is permitted to resolve a given scenario however they see fit, within the remit of the rules listed above, in the interest of all participants. The GM will resolve all scenarios as closely as possible to the intention of the rules, and will present an explanation regarding the adjudication to the greatest possible detail (which does not compromise anything in-game) and as closely in accordance with the written rules as possible.

1. A minimum posting limit of two required substantial posts (and a vote included) has been set to reduce lurking. While inactivity is, on some level, an important part of the game of Mafia, players who provide nothing but a warm body serve only to reduce the degree of enjoyment and increase the degree of frustration of the other players in the game. Signing up for this game is an expression of commitment to taking it seriously – do not sign up if you believe you will not be able to spend any time on it.

2. All role PMs have been posted in the setup information below, and all players (regardless of alignment) will receive identical copies of the vanilla town role PM. The point of this rule is to forbid "gaming" the role PMs to determine alignments; after all, the fun of this game is reading people, not outguessing the GM.

3. Encryption is defined as posting an encoded message on public channels that an average person would require outside tools to decode. It is perfectly acceptable to leave "hidden messages" in your posts (for example, spelling out "I AM THE COP" with the first letters of every sentence), but as a rule of thumb, if you don't think the average webDip user could decode it without a decryption service, don't post it.

4. All in-game communications should be kept within the thread. The mafia will receive a QuickTopic thread for communicating with one another outside of the game thread during Night phases; aside from this, there should be no other forms of private messaging.

5. Players who have been removed from the game are no longer playing the game, and will not be permitted to comment on it in private messages or comment threads. A special QuickTopic thread will be opened for individuals who wish to spectate on the game, or players who have been eliminated. Use these channels to discuss the game while it is still ongoing.

6. This is a catch-all rule intended to preserve the spirit of the game. If you are considering saying or doing something that may be against the spirit of the game, message the GM about it before saying/doing it and the GM will let you know whether it is allowed or not.

7. This rule simply means that your actions should in some conceivable way advance your win condition as stated in your role PM. This rule is somewhat subjective, because the difference between a mistake and sabotage is sometimes hard to determine; the GM will exercise caution and restraint in observing this rule. This also means that if you need to leave the game for any reason, you should not simply drop out, but should message me first so I can determine the best course of action.

PENALTIES

The penalty for breaking one of the above rules is decided at the GM’s discretion, up to and including immediate removal from the game and/or sanctions from future games. Removal and/or sanction are instruments of last resort and will be used only if absolutely necessary. A player removed from the game may or may not have their role revealed on removal, depending on the circumstances surrounding their removal.

VOTING
There are three types of voting within this game: collective voting to lynch players in Day phases, collective voting to end a Day or Night phase, and Mafia voting to kill town members in Night phases.

The first level of voting is for whom you intend to lynch. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before your intended vote target. (e.g., ##VOTE ghug) You do not need to spell out your intended target's username fully; as long as the GM can understand who you're referencing. In the event of a tie during a lynch vote, no one shall be lynched.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not use double octothorpes your vote will not be counted, for reasons of fairness but also because it is unlikely the GM will see your vote using the CTRL+F feature and this rule thus prevents vote miscounts.

The second level of voting is whether or not to employ the hammer mechanic. By default, days are set to 48 hours long, and nights to 24 hours long; however, players may instead elect to activate the hammer mechanic. Notate this vote with a pair of octothorpes before the word end. (EX: ##END). The game will switch to the hammer mechanic for the duration of that day once a majority of players choose vote to end. When the hammer mechanic is activated, the day will end as soon as there is a plurality of votes on someone. If you are not able to vote before the hammer is dropped, you will not be penalized for failing to vote during that day.

The third level of voting refers to Mafia members choosing their NK (nightkill) targets during Night phases. The mafia members will use their separate QuickTopic thread to discuss this. Please make your votes in bold, like so: kill ND (< b > kill ND < / b >). Mafia NK will be decided by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the oldest vote will break the tie.

ROLE ACTIONS
If your role has a special action (eg. Roleblocking, investigating, shooting a gun etc) then you should PM your action to both GM’s. Day actions such as dayvig shots will be processed as soon as possible by the first GM to read this. Night actions will be processed at the end of the night and can be changed up to that point. Mafia night actions can be voted on or selected in the Mafia QuickTopic thread.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

SPAM
Spamming (defined as excessive content-free posting; or, excessive posting regarding subjects irrelevant to the game) is not mod-killed by rule in this game. The in-game voting mechanic exists to curb any advantage that spamming as a tactic may confer; please reference the “VOTING” section above for more information. Suffice to say that spamming is not worth anyone’s time in this setup, and will be frowned upon, so while you may not be lynched or mod-killed for spamming, please refrain from doing so.

PLAYER SILENCES:
Players that have other participants on their mute list are asked to remove them for the duration of this game. Disputes stemming from outside of this game should not carry over into the gameplay. If they do, the GM reserves the right to address these issues and potentially remove or sanction players if it becomes a disruption.

FORUM SILENCES:
If a player is silenced on the forum by the moderator/admin team, an alternate will take their place for the duration of their silence. The silenced player will then have the option to take their position back over or leave it in the hands of the alternate. As long as the silence does not stem from actions involving the mafia thread, there will be no in-game sanctions for a forum silence.

REPLACEMENTS
A player wishing to drop out may be replaced at the GM's discretion. Individuals wishing to serve as potential replacements must NOT join the out-of-game God QT. (Being in the Observer QT is acceptable). Replacement is not guaranteed.

TURN DURATION
This game’s Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours, unless cut short by in-game mechanics (e.g., hammer). Extensions may be granted at a moderator’s discretion, but don’t count on it. Phase shifts will be at 11PM GMT

GM TEAM
This game’s GM is Hellenic Riot (userID=23172), and the co-GM is DemonOverlord (userID=69557). PM both of us with any questions or concerns and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

ROLES
Vanilla Town
You are a member of District 13. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be killed at the end of the day. You have no night actions. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Cop: You are the cop! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night you may select one player to investigate; at the end of the night you will be told whether that player is Town-Aligned, Mafia-Aligned, or Neither, unless you are roleblocked. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Doctor: You are the doctor! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be killed at the end of the day. During the night you can use your surgical skill to protect one player. If the player you protected would have been killed during the night, he or she will be saved. You can protect yourself, but you cannot protect the same target two nights in a row. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Vigilante: You the Vigilante! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. You have a shotgun, and may choose to fire this three times throughout the game. You may shoot at day OR at night, however, due to the time it takes to reload your shotgun, you may only shoot once per phase. Night shots will only go through at the end of the night, but Day shots will go through as soon as a GM can process it. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Oracle: You are the Oracle! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night you can select one living person. If you die that night or during the following day, the role of the person you selected will be revealed to everyone in the game. This ability cannot be roleblocked. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Bomb: You are the Bomb! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate which reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. Your rage against the Capitol has lead you to become a walking bomb. The first person who successfully attempts to kill you will be blown up alongside you, but your defensive power fails if you are lynched. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Virgin: You are the Virgin. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. If you are lynched at the end of a day, your death will strike sorrow into the nation, and no kills will go through in the following night. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Drunk: You are the Drunk. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you can select one living person to have a drink with. That person will be unable to make any night actions of their own as a result. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

Watcher: You are the Watcher. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you can choose the house of one player to watch through security cameras. At the end of the night, you will receive a list of everyone who visited the player in question. Because the watcher does not leave his own house, he cannot be roleblocked. You win once all of the Capitol scum have been overthrown and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat.

MAFIA

Mafioso: You are the Mafioso! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your fellow mafia and vote on who to kill. Your fellow mafia are <Mafia member A>, the <role>, <Mafia member B>, the <role>, <Mafia member C>, the <role>, <Mafia member D>, the <role>, and <Mafia member E>, the <role>. You win once all the rebellious members of District 13 have been crushed and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat, or nothing can prevent this happening. You may discuss at night with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Janitor: You are the Janitor. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to kill. Once per game at night you may choose to "clean-up" the body of the person you kill; only you will know their role if they die that night. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Hooker: You are the Hooker! During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your fellow mafia and vote on who to kill. You may choose not to kill anyone. Each night, you may select one player. That person will be roleblocked, and cannot use any night actions. If there are no other mafia left who can kill at night, then you will gain the ability to kill but lose the ability to roleblock. Your fellow mafia are <Mafia member A>, the <role>, <Mafia member B>, the <role>, <Mafia member C>, the <role>, <Mafia member D>, the <role>, and <Mafia member E>, the <role>. You may discuss at night with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Stalker: You are the Stalker. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to kill. During the night you may also choose one person to visit; at the end of the night you will discover the role of the player you visit. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Framer: You are the Framer. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to kill. During the night you may also choose one person to visit; that person will show up as 'Mafia-Aligned' on any cop reports. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Lawyer: You are the Lawyer. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to kill. During the night you may also visit one partner that night, and that partner will show up as ‘Town-Aligned’ on any cop reports. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Informant: You are the Informant. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the night, you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to kill. During the night you may also choose one person to visit; at the end of the night you will receive any GM messages they receive. The player in question will still receive their message as normal and will not be alerted to this. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Kidnapper: You are the Kidnapper. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the day you may also choose one player to kidnap. That player will be unable to do anything for the entire night as you lock them in your dungeon. This ability cannot be roleblocked. During the night, you may talk to your mafia partners, and vote on who to kill. You may discuss with your fellow mafia members and submit night actions in this QuickTopic thread: <QuickTopic thread link>.

Sniper: You are the Sniper. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. During the day, you may shoot a longbow to instantly kill any other player in the game by messaging the GM's. Your longbow has two arrows, and you may only shoot once per day. As an infiltration unit, you do not know the identities of your fellow Mafia and are unable to communicate with them outside of the public eye. If there are no other mafia members left, you will gain the ability to kill at night but lose any arrows your longbow has remaining. You win once all the rebellious members of District 13 have been crushed and the Amnesiac is no longer a threat, or nothing can prevent this happening.

Third Party:

Amnesiac: You are the Amnesiac. You drank too much alcohol during a wild party, and now have no idea who you are. During the day you may make an accusation against someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be lynched at the end of the day. At night, you may look at a dead player and permanently steal their identity, becoming their role and sided with the team that they were on. This ability can only be used once. If you are investigated whilst you have no memory, the Cop will recognise you as sided with neither the town nor the mafia. You cannot win without stealing an identity.

1. Welcome friends and wellwishers. Brainy here. I have been thinking ever since seeing the setup that this Amnesiac may actually help alleviate any mislynch worry day 1. I know that sounds totally absurd but consider that we have an Amnesiac we can simply call upon if the game ever becomes too Maf-sided anyway. We could easily just plead with the Amnesiac to replicate anyone we accidentally mislynch on any day for that matter. What motive would the Amnesiac have to joining the Mafia anyway? I still think Day 1 lynch has the potential to be a positive for Town. Look at last game... well I digress.

Let me know if this idea is horrible or unreasonable. I am not entirely sure we can just expect to be gifted with such a stupid opening day slip like we were blessed with last game.

2. It would be interesting for us to systematically have at least 1 or 2 people in every read that is bait for the nightkills. We should never be so stupid as to give the people we townread as our PR the titles in our reads of “VERY TOWN”. I wont tell you what to do in regards to that but keep in mind we have new players so perhaps clear and concise is actually not optimal in regards to reads. A great idea is to lure mafia into targeting people you may read as the bomb for example. (This is not breadcrumbing, nor am I softing anything).

3. I hope we had 3 weeks to get all the bullshit posts out of our system. I wont harp on it but really. Its stupid to have tons of mindless votes for nonparticipants, ect. The page one votes rarely ever stick or have anything useful to offer.

4. I encourage you all to read people carefully. Also, if we could keep a vote tracker again that would be very useful. It helps us to paint a picture later of who the villains are.

5. I like the idea of being lighter on the vote hopping this game. but then again if we have a vote tracker later it helps to keep an accurate measure of people’s semi-schizophrenic tendencies. To expand on this idea too, there really ought to be people watching out for post totals too. I feel Mafia are much more calculated and careful in their posting amounts. They tend to be measured, whereas players like myself, balki, and Maniac tend to bleed townie most games because of playing with reckless abandon. Certainly that style of play needs to be tweaked a bit. But at its core it defends the town PR’s, and also keeps dialogue open.

6. Put aside personal differences guys. Bury the rivalries and start anew!

Just in case newbies don't know - keep your roles hidden until you are 100% certain the reveal will help town. When you think you're certain, wait awhile, think again and if you're still certain, then and only then reveal your roles.

@bb, but why would the Amnesiac want to become town if they see that mafia is winning? It seems that the Amnesiac actually skews the game more towards whatever side is winning, so I don't think it alleviates any mislynch.

@Maniac, but surely they don't need to keep their roles hidden if they are Mafia?

wow yoyo, you seem a bit eager.

I think nothing offers a more candid bit of bait than a vote but did you even read anything I said? Anyways keep your useless vote on me then, you havent even gotten to hear the best part yet. A vote retraction makes the player look feeble, and incoherent. its important that we use things like votes and reads as bait, while ignoring the vote itself and seeing what people are doing with the bait. I do not intend to ever survive to the endgame as townie because my job is to confuse the enemy, in fact if people do not grow weary of me I will wonder why. I was also trying to get a somewhat serious discussion on reckless voting habits going early on this game which um... yoyo you have more than just emphasized. Bad voting habits are a poison, if you want to vote for someone make it have meaning. This was a deficiency of my own for MXV and MXVI. I think I have a plan here but who knows, I might be way off track (though more than likely I'll just get lynched day 1 anyway since I tend to annoy people). I am also hoping that my being a target will have purpose then? which you have done quite needlessly unless of course you are not a townie at all??

Any vote that can help us mid-late game when more is known is a positive. Killing me yields the probability that Amensiac will not be joining either team as I have no powers to offer only my wits and my "brain".

Amnesiac will know when to nab powers. And it is far more likely that they will do this for the Town side than for the Mafia. My reason is that human beings love the underdog. Personally, If I were Amnesiac I would try to steal powers from a dead cop, a dead vig, or any decent powered Townie that ever dies. Stealing Mafia powers and joining into Mafia as the Amnesiac is actually suboptimal for both the Amnesiac and the Mafia because it forces that player to unexpectedly change reads and behavior. A great example of this xorxes is last game where you got converted. I dont want to harp about last game alot. This is something else. But keep in mind that by shifting what team you are on from a team of “unknowns” to a team of “well established networkers” is incredibly dangerous.

##Can the Amnesiac win as a 3rd party having “never used their power?” (hence worth more points in our current scoring system) Or is the only way for the Amnesiac to win is to pick a side?

##GM Note: No. As stated in the role description the Amnesiac has to steal an identity to win.

@brainbomb

While we're on the business of people that can't read, in the role PM for amnesiac it specifically says "You cannot win without stealing an identity."

Guys, ghug didn't sit here waiting for the first post. Isn't that weird? He's been one of the first posters in all the games I remember, and always within the first couple minutes.

bb seems to be trying too hard from the get go, not sure if that's normal for him, but highlighting himself like so: "players like myself, balki, and Maniac tend to bleed townie most games because of playing with reckless abandon." Paints an improper picture, especially considering the games when mafia WERE the big talkers directing town discussion.

Granted, off-the-cuff remarks are harder to simulate, but it's not like the mafia need to simulate all their posts. They just need to pretend to be helpful. They can be very genuine in all other ways, and have just as much reckless abandon--especially when there are still many alive. Risky strategies are more likely to be town because town members are generally less valuable, but it hardly stops mafia from playing that way.

Please help me set up my first FtF game with friends
Hi mods, I'd like to use the site to play a FtF game with a group of friends. Any advice on how I should proceed? Not getting banned as a multi during/after the game is strongly preferred.
Also, if anyone has any experience playing FtF with all players entering orders on their phones/tablets and/or with players who never played Diplomacy before, please let me know how it went and what I should expect. Thanks!

Civil Disorder - How many un-sumitted orders until Civil Disorder
I'm currently playing a 20-hour/phase game in which I've seen two players not submit orders for over 5 seasons as well as the retreats and disbands. Really slows the game if the player has left the game. When does Civil Disorder take over and moves are made automatically?

The United States have gone completely mad.
Hey guys, it's redhouse, it's been a while.
Just so you know: the US have gone completely mad. If you have Donald "bleeding from wherever" Trump heading the major right wing race and Mitch "Constitution? What's a constitution?" McConnell heading the senate, something is wrong.
Very, very, very wrong.
