Hello everyone! I just created a world game in hopes that we can get a fun, clean game together. The meek and anti-social need not apply.

Off-topic: Browser Game
I've been playing a little browser game that lets you built up a squad of soldiers and customize them in order for them to fight automatically against other opponents.
It's quite nifty overall if you get into it and only take a couple of minutes each day.

Credibility issues after stabbing
Hey everyone,
I had a little issue I was curious about on stabbing: is that really the path to winning this game? I always find it a waste of good faith-building in an alliance to resort to simple terrain nicking at some point when you have so many more options (see follow up):

People missing orders
Argh! The first two games I play on here, two powers failed to submit Spring 1901 orders, which really fucks things up. :( I wish there was some sort of penalty for this or that webdiplomacy would send emails when a game starts and when you have orders due...

**OFFICIAL - Summer Gunboat News**
Really sorry about the delay with game three. It will happen as soon as we figure out the technical issue with replacing this one player. I think we're going to forgo the 4th game (round 2 only has 3 anyway), that way the first leg will be done by end-June, leaving July for the second leg and August for the finals.

Bad play by Germany? How about bad play by Italy? Italy could have easily stopped Austria by teaming with me rather than idiotically helping Austria out. Just boneheaded

No offense Santa, but when three out of the four games that you were in end in another person's solo, you should take a step back and analyze the situation further before blaming other people... I for one am glad that you haven't made it to the next round.

That leaves 3 games left in the first round:

Two of them are paused for some reason.

Also, I am shocked that Troodonte is probably out of the competition.

Damn, I thought I was on the outside looking in. Hope going for broke and getting a 4-way instead of 3-way in Game 3 doesn't cost me. What happens if there's a tie for the last spot?
Geofram (130 D(B))
07 Aug 11 UTC
If we really have a supply centre tie for the last spot, I suppose we'll go by most centres in one game, unless someone else has a better idea. (And that idea can't come from someone who might be tied for the last spot!)
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

If there's a tie for last spot, I will withdraw. I join to help the league out and will not mind giving up my spot to one of the original contestants.

It's funny that both 4-E and 4-F ended in FGT 3-way.

Also, half the solos were achieved by Turkey, nice Turkey!

:) But these are gunboats after all, a much more comfortable place for Turkey, well suited to its ability to stab Russia one turn, then jump on Austria in the next and then switch on bashing Italy, then back on Austria... without any serious repercussions :)

Tie for last spot should be decided on who was most disadvantaged by the country draw. For example if we list France 1, Germany 2, Turkey 3, England 4, Austria 5, Russia 6, and Italy 7 (as an example of how hard it is to play a country) then total up the players in the tie break a player starting as Italy (7) + Russia (6) + Austria (5) and England (4) total (22) would beat a player starting with France (1) + Germany (2) + Turkey (3) + Italy (7) total (13).

I'm sure someone could come up with the definative list of ranking the countries (my list was of the top of my head)
Maniac (189 D(B))

PS I on't be involved in any tie-break so my idea is impartial

Geofram (130 D(B))
11 Aug 11 UTC
@Maniac, I don't like deciding it based on something that neither of the players had any control over. =/

Hopefully we just don't have a tiebreaker.
Maniac (189 D(B))
11 Aug 11 UTC
@geofram - the players couldn't decide the starting countries but they either did better than par or worse than par
Geofram (130 D(B))
11 Aug 11 UTC
I'm confused. You wanted to decide between two players based on what countries they drew right? That's completely out of their control and ranking the countries would be far too subjective in its own right.

Thankfully the chances of a centre-count tie happening now is very very slim, but I would still like to have "something" in place just in case it does happen. Because any discussion about how to decide a tie will be void once the tie happens.

As it stands, "most centres in any one game" is the best we've got and its been used before. Punishing or rewarding someone for the countries they randomly drew just won't work.
Geofram (130 D(B))
11 Aug 11 UTC
Don't get me wrong, I know what you're saying:

"Player A drew Turkey, he should of done better than Player B that did not draw Turkey and because they're tied, Player B moves on."

But in no way is that fair to Player A. There are too many assumptions taken and too many subjective opinions thrown in about the balance of gunboat. This tournament alone has proven that no one country has such a huge advantage over others that drawing it at the start of a game should disqualify you against a player that did not draw the same country.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

I thought Turkey had half of the solos...
Maniac (189 D(B))
11 Aug 11 UTC
underrstood, but no matter what system you now decide upon the players are unlikely to have been able to affected it. How about taking their top scoring game and seeing judging the strength of the opposition based on the oppositions' finishing position. So someone getting a good result against good players goes through at the expense of someone getting a good result against lesser players?
Geofram (130 D(B))
11 Aug 11 UTC
"underrstood, but no matter what system you now decide upon the players are unlikely to have been able to affected it."

But how is "most centres in one game" not something the player(s) could influence?

You run into the same problem when deciding based on "who they played." They had no opportunity to affect that.
uclabb (589 D)
11 Aug 11 UTC
Shouldn't the first tiebreaker be number of supply centers excluding those that were "soloed on"? Because if you get soloed on, you really got 0 centers.
Geofram (130 D(B))
11 Aug 11 UTC
I've been including supply centres even if they were from another player's solo. There's a big difference in surviving with 1 centre and surviving with 16, even if you received no tournament points for it.

It's unlikely that excluding said centres would fix any tiebreaker if the players were already tied for centres, but I suppose that would turn the deciding factor as to who takes the 21st slot into "did you get soloed against?"

200001: A Past Legacy
Every human life on Earth, tomorrow, suddenly vanishes. Mankind is gone for good. But you learn that by the year 200001, either the Apes will rise, or space aliens will come along...SOMEONE will populate Earth once more, and wonder who used to live here. You build a Mt. Mankind: 10 Heads of anyone who's ever lived, and one relic/piece of work of theirs to tell the future who humans were. Who, and what, do you choose?

Idea for a new betting system: % instead of # of points
I'd like to suggest a new option in which the required bet for a game is an equal percentage of a player's total points (including those in play) instead of a set number of points. In practice, the relative investment for all players would be more equal and could encourage underdogs to take on the richest players on the site.
