What opposing power do you most want to see in able hands?

Which country in Classic that you are not playing do you most hope is in the hands of someone with a reasonably good sense of the overall map dynamics, unit abilities and the way various provinces and powers relate to one another?

A pity it turned out as it did.

It was poised interestingly, although I suspect it was mostly "Let's kill the non-voting people". The I/R/T scramble was fun. Given Germany's latest push into Venice, I feel Russia would have come out on top of Turkey unless Germany built armies and sent them east (unlikely)

Faster Than The Speed of Light.

Some breaking news yesterday from CERN that subatomic particles seem to have beaten the speed of light. Very exciting and, although CERN wants the results checked again before publishing, such an extraordinary claim that I thought I'd bring it to attention here on the forum.

@ players in Group C: I haven't been able to get in touch with any Mods, including the one in this tournament. Please cancel the games (this can be done without Mods), and then create them again. Don't start new games until old ones are cancelled.

To everyone: When the games fill, please vote to pause. That should solve the issue that Group C just dealt with.

also, do you really expect to get the games cancelled AND recreated without mod help? Good luck with that!!! LOL
if the games are cancelled consider me out of the tournament.
I have some time to waste but not that much to play 3 games just to see them getting cancelled for stupid reasons.

If that's the case, hellalt, I'll make this easy. I've gone to the mods to ask for a cancel. It might take a day or two, but it will happen. Hellalt is out, hammac is first up to take his spot. I'm sending him a PM now.

Perhaps in future there should be a grace period for players to join games and if, for whatever reason, they don't join their group games in that time then a reserve player can take their place.

Group D is still missing 1 person.

So the cancel has gone through. I'll gladly create the new games and send PMs with passwords, but with a 10-day phase so mods don't miss the first phase to do the reshuffle. Then they can change phase length.

I have drawn the same power twice in Group B as well, and I don't really care whether we remake or continue. I'm good with playing on.

@trip: If there is consensus among the players of a group, can the games be started?
@Group B: Does anyone have issues with me / fullhamish / you drawing the same country twice?

Btw, for you mathematicians out there: What is the probability that, assuming randomly chosen powers in 3 games for the same 7 players, there will be no player ending up with the same power at least twice. (This is our condition for the tournament)
My educated estimation is: 4%

If Group B is not paused before the end of the phase, all games will be cancelled and you'll have to create and join the games again...which will only delay things further.

np, trip. As bihary pointed out, the probability of it not happening was low. Directly using the fact the 7th DeMontmort number is 1854, a (very loose) upper bound is 9%, but this is obvious overcounting. Hopefully things get sorted out soon.

There is Mod help, but they have other duties besides this. With C set up and B paused, we'll just be waiting for one person each to join A and D. Once that happens, all the games will be sent to the Mods. If I had to guess, I'd say we'll be up and running by next week.

Well, the odds of you not getting the same power at least twice in three games is around 60% - (6/7) * (5/7). Assuming that the odds of someone else getting the same power more than once is independent from whether anyone else does, then there is slightly more than a 3% chance that everyone will get three unique countries.

Donor Status

Question- I have a bronze donor symbol by my name. Is this fair within the game? Does it help my play, grant me "serious player" status so my word gets respected? Or make me a target instead?

I know that I look for that symbol in every game I am now entering. I treat others different when I see it. Is this part of the "spirit" of Diplomacy?

Question about automatic disband for cd nations...

This last turn I expected cyrene and libyan sea to disband, according to the rules for automatic disband for cd nations.... Libyan sea, cyrene and marmarica are all 1 movement from egypts home supply centers... cyrene and libyan sea come before marmarica in the alphabet... is this a mistake or is there something i'm missing...?

Rule Change for the Forums

I have a suggestion. Why dont the Mods make a rule that bans obscene comments in the forums and bans anyone who makes one or at least fines them. THis will allow the people who want to use the forums for their intended, appropriate, use.
