This is probably irrelevant to most of you, but my second daughter just came into the world. Where do I go to share this news? Webdip.
In any event, she's healthy and I am one happy papa.

Okay I can agree to that, it's a good middle ground. Which is sort of why I've been asking who y'all would lynch, because no one seems very mafia-like so far.

I might also add that it is much much harder without body language to tell who is being devious. I'm used to it in diplo but this game has only kills, whereas diplomacy has much more "non-verbal" information even when online.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

1) He'll gather better intel if we kill one person.
2) The mafia for sure will make a move. That move will be the murder of an innocent person.
3) No we won't. Why would we?

Chaqa (3971 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
Like I said. The risk of killing the wrong person is WAY too large right now. We need at least one turn to gather our thoughts and watch.

If I had to pick one person to lynch, though, it'd be krellin. He's trying his damndest to stir up trouble.

thucy - i/will remind you AGAIN you petulant child, I am not alone in my stance regarding lynching. And your erratic behavior is suspicious at best. Your tantrums when someone defies you makes you suspicious, at best. Your lack of integrity to keep in the role f the game is either immaturity....or a gaming loy meant to manipulate people...making yoususicious at best.

Ihave not voted to lynch you...i have cast no vote...but you seem to be making quite a case for yourself. I think your feigned outrage is a ploy...giving you the benefit of the doubt that you have payed this befre and know what you are doing.

The self-righteous mafia man....well played, perhaps.

We'll see if anyne else reads you the same.

I don't know who I would suggest be lynched yet, I want to hear from everyone at least a little bit so I'm not going on nothing. The subsequent days it will be easier to have the accusations flying early based on prior events.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Chaqa - how have I stirred trouble? By expressing an opinion on a course of action? A course others agree upon?

Perhaos you fear action for a reason?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
You're pushing to lynch us for not wanting to lynch anyone. Seems like trouble to me
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Chaqa - Others have said the same thing. So why target me specifically? Why not abge? Jk3r?

You want to lynch me because I want to lynch a non-lyncher. What twisted logic is that. So if you are pro-lynching, you agree with me----AND disagree with me at the same time? playing both sides?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
This is the kind of fruitless back and forth I was talking about. You can't tell here if it's Krellin who's mafia trying to get Chaqa lynched, or the other way around and Chaqa in the mafia angling to set up a lynch of krellin, or just the two of them hanging a different opinion and being spiteful and/or paranoid of each other as two innocent townsfolk.

I dunno, if you guys feel like you have any real leads, let me know. The accusations that have been aired so far are really not enough to convict on.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
03 Apr 14 UTC
Of course not yet, we're just voicing our opinion that, if possible, we should be debating this first round with the goal of lynching someone suspicious.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
For the record I am a towny, not that I would say I wasn't if I weren't. This is as simple as a difference of opinion. Hell, Krellin is probably another towny but as of now he's the person I trust the least
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Good lord Thucy..before you wanted discussion you establish a baseline for future comparison...and now discussion is bad? So really, you just object to anyone talking is disagreement to you? I enjoy seipeing what Chaqa's exlanation will be, and perhaps his motives. THAT is what we are supposed to be doing right now....baselining characters. Get it? Your character , for example, is flip-flopping, inconsistentcy, and prone to anger when your suggestions is ignored. Am I wrong?
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
No accusations, other than Chaqas, have been raised, Thucy.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
But don't you see how ridiculous it is to set up a court whose goal is a conviction? It should be a possibility but not an objective. I don't foresee anything happening that would meaningfully suggestive that anyone here is mafia, other than maybe like an accidental mafia message posted to this thread, or some other off-chance thing
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
And Chaqa has now identified himself as one to lynch without cause - "probably a towny" but let's lynch him. Not a strong team player, that one.

This is what we are to be learning right now Thucy and Chaqa. How people makes decisions, and how we can or can not work together.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
Lol this is a disaster. This should have probably been done live. 48 hours for the forum to just sit and churn like this over this echo chamber of nothingness is just too long. Lol what a shitshow
Everyone needs to post, so we should wait for everyone to say their piece before deciding who is most suspicious. Throwing stones this early should not be encourage, it is best to keep our suspicious under wraps for now. Tomorrow evening I will probably cast my vote, with an argument and see who agrees. Anyway, I am done for now, so good luck, to the rest of you. And please, keep it civil.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
Yeah perhaps the most important thing to be doing this phase actually is to see who is keeping quiet. Especially silent people - either they are mafia, they will stick up for themselves, or they are NMRing and will be kicked anyway - much to lose by targeting a silent person, if someone must be targeted this phase.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
So you have a cause to lynch because you want to lynch the non-lynchers, Krellin? That's a bad reason. Me wanting to lynch you for wanting to lynch me is more of a self-defense move than a want for a lynch. Take note that I am on record as no lynch right now. So the ball is in your court.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Chaqa - I have never said I wanted to lynch you. Please read more carefully. But if a majority want to cooperate in a certain way and can work together, theobviously those that oppose the behavior are the first to go, so the remaining citizens can continue to work together.

You want to lynch me---therefore I would not target you, because you agree that someone needs to be lynched (even if it is me).
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Chaqa - you can't be "no lynch" and "lynch krellin" lol <sigh>
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
Like listen to this babble, lol, oohhh the lynchers suggest to lynch the anti-lynch because of their lynching lynchers platform so they should be lynched....

It's obvious that neither of you are mafia, and that this has just become polarized for no reason. Which is why I think lynching now would be silly. Lynch who? Your forum opponents? That's a ridiculous and un-fun way to play this game and we should all of make sure that's not what starts happening. I think it being the firs turn and nothing actually going to happen for another 40 hours only exacerbates it.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Thucy - who has ever suggested lynching "forum opponents"??? I do not know what that means in the context of this game. But clearly, according to you, all this press has caused you to make a decision about who isnwhat -- THEREFOREit has achieved it's objective! duhhh....
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
In other words,Thucy, you have AGAIN contradicted yourself.
WardenDresden (239 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
"It's obvious that neither of you are mafia"

Isn't that the sort of information such discussions are supposed to produce? I am far less convinced about the surety of their innocence. For all we know they're both mafia playing off each other so we think they're both citizens. Or one of them is a mafia pretending to be a townie. The end goal of any day phase should be to lynch someone, including this first phase. Any information except from a self-proclaimed cop wouldn't be definitive at any stage of the game, so this discourse is just as valuable as discourse when we're down to say 6 people. If anything, your stance as thinking this whole thing is just being a "shitshow" inclines me to vote for lynching you just so you can be a happy martyr and stop bitching at the rest of us for playing the game.

"But don't you see how ridiculous it is to set up a court whose goal is a conviction?"
This isn't a court of law, it's a friggen game on a diplomacy forum that, I at least, am having fun with. Our goal as townspeople IS to convict the four mafia members and the serial killer, so naturally any trials we have would have that conviction as the primary motivator. This is a simplified situation with simple rules and no consequences. Relax and have fun with the whole thing. My bad if your calling this a shitshow is your version of having fun.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
My version of having fun is playing a good game as best I can! Anyway, "for all we know" should probably be the motto of Day 1... if you ask me.
I favor a Day 1 lynching. I think the discussion process is helpful in gathering intel. If we decide not to lynch, then we gain little this first day. It also keeps the Mafia on their toes because they could get picked off if they don't work at steering the vote away from themselves.

I favor targeting someone who has not spoken much, but who has at least satisfied the one post (with vote) minimum to avoid being booted. This encourages people to speak up, and thwarts a Mafia plan to have some goons be vocal and some near-silent. By only targeting someone who has satisfied the minimum, we don't waste a lynch vote on someone who will be NMR'd out. In particular, I would watch for someone who slides in just at the last second to qualify for the minimum.

It's Maple's Alter Ego! (But Seriously--Should Serling Be Forced to Sell the Team?)
http://nba.si.com/2014/04/29/donald-sterling-adam-silver-nba-owners-reaction/ To be clear--this is HYPOTHETICAL. There's nothing in the NBA Constitution that gives the commissioner the right to do this, so this is more just a thought experiment--say that power existed, and Adam Silver COULD force Serling to sell the team based on his repeated racist comments over the years, with this last doozy being the kicker. If the power existed, SHOULD the man lose his team over this?

Gunboat game for the reliable but poor
I'm tired of the NMRs and CDs that are far too common i the low-bet games I can afford to play. I'd love to play in the big-pot games with the best players, but I don't have the $ (and, hey, I'm not that good anyway). If there are other middle of the road players who feel the same way, perhaps we can organize a password-protected game (or two if there's enough interest) of reliable gunboaters. More below.

Phase length for FTF games?
I've been thinking about putting together a face to face game for some new players (friends who don't play diplomacy.... yet). But, I've never played FTF myself - so:

What kind of phase lengths do people use? I assume that there's also a time or turn cap too (eg game ends in 1910)?

Two IU players busted for underage drinking, one I know well. I guess the shocking part of their arrests is that the police in B-town are such assholes that they go around hunting for underage drinkers on Little 500 Day.

Please tell me no one on webDip suffered until 21 before their first drink.

So, one of my courses this semester is about "contemporary issues" and one of the issues I'm supposed to debate during our final is whether Woody Allen deserved the lifetime achievement award given to him by the Golden Globes. I've been assigned to argue on the side that he should not have gotten the award. And I want to hear what the people of WebDip think. Source links in the thread.
