The Art of Correspondence ... out in hardback
For those who prefer the old fashioned (but alas, far more expensive) way of reading. This book is now available in hardback, at least in the UK. I'm not sure about the USA and if someone could confirm ya or nay, I'd appreciate it.

Help me think of a more useful Computer Science end project!
The current plan of the teacher is for 10 16 to 18-year-old students to create and program a machine with lego-stuff that effectively sorts different colours of candy. I'm really annoyed by the prospect of spending many hours on creating something utterly useless.
Better ideas? It needs broadness, with different aspects and groups working together.

BOG is willfully ignorant, so he deserves to be exposed as such.

The economy does better under Democrats than Republicans. Tell me, BOG, who was the last POTUS with significant private sector experience? Hint: Go back at least 80 years.

Ever heard of Eniac? Univac? Xerox PARC? ARPANET? The Internet? Clearly not.

If you think I'm advocating that ridiculous position, you need to go back and reread everything. Not everyone tries to ask leading questions like you do or warp their words into something that fits your narrow world view.

The government is good at providing the fundamental research that is needed for technological advances. It is less good at turning that research into things that sell, so that is why private corporations are also very important.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Private corporations happen anyway though. Governments only research if we give them the means.

@ BaldOldTwit: "JK "The origins of the high tech industry is exclusive to government research projects." Right. HP, Microsoft, Google all came from the government. You don't have a clue."

Well, a court has just ruled that many of the technological developments in Apple's newer ranges of iPhones were stolen from the research of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. That's a state-funded University. The University also sued Intel for patent infringement and Intel agreed a mutli-million dollar out-of-court settlement with them. So, yeah, direct examples of the tech industry being driven by publicly-funded tech research (and trying to get away without paying for it).

Steep - Surprise surprise, I do not support big government.
Could you, just for once, ask me a question in reaction to what I say rather than some made up stuff of what you seem to believe I say or believe? Let’s give it a try.

“I think this is a serious problem and the sole cause of all radical opinions you hold.” The radical position I hold is that I believe the US constitution has put forth a government that has defeated Communism, Nazism, and is a force for good in the world. The economic growth that comes from individual freedom and liberty articulated in the constitution has set the standard for what a government should be. Big government gives us the Soviet Union, Zimbabwe and Cuba. So please tell me what radical ideas you think I hold.

“You condemn Islam because you 'know' what they believe even if Muslims tell you you're simply wrong about what they believe. I ‘know’ what muslims believe because I read the Koran. I posted the muslim terrorists quoting the verses from the Koran as the basis for their beliefs. They believe, as I do, what the Koran says it says, except when those verses have been abrogated. In talking to a muslim, you need to understand abrogation, taqiyya and kitman.

“You condemn socialism with an argument against democracy. 3 wolves and a sheep voting for dinner has absolutely 0 to do with socialism, yet this is why socialism is evil.” Where do Socialists get their money for their re-distributive programs? Take from the producers and give it to the takers. Socialists can ‘vote’ themselves increases in what they take from producers. That was the wolf example. Socialism and democracy both allow the tyranny of the majority.

“You make up opponents, throw them in a group of your choice and hold everyone in that group responsible for your made up opponents. This is really bad for you because you'll be less and less able to see what's real and what isn't if you continue down this path.” I don’t understand your point. Please give me examples of opponents I “made up”

Please react to this. Please react to every part of this without throwing an irrelevant one-line question at me.

"The radical position I hold is that I believe the US constitution has put forth a government that has defeated Nazism..."

"Big government gives us the Soviet Union"

Yeah, because the Soviet Union played no part in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Please.

"Where do Socialists get their money for their re-distributive programs?"

You do not understand what money is. Can you eat money? Can you wear it? No. Money is just metal and paper tokens, which can be exchanged for other resources. Socialism takes the position that the resources of a nation are the resources of society, to be used for society's benefit, not the benefit of the individuals who have the most tokens.

JK - "The economy does better under Democrats than Republicans. " the establishment republicans are just as bad as the democrats. Both support big government spending. 0bama doubled the national debt to 17 trillion dollars. 0bama complained that Bush added 3 trillion in debt, and that was immoral. Regulations like Sarbanes Oxlely and Dodd Frank are but a few examples of the oppressive legislation that kills business. So no, I do not consider myself a republican. I consider myself a conservative who wants the government to follow the constitution.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)

Jamie - "Socialism takes the position that the resources of a nation are the resources of society, to be used for society's benefit, not the benefit of the individuals who have the most tokens." So does Bill Gates deserve the money he made? Is Microsoft a resource of the country? You don't understand production and wealth creation. Burger King moved to Canada because government was taking too much in taxes. As the takers keep taking to pay for 'benefits' in society, eventually you get an Atlas Shrugged situation where the producers simply leave. We are going to have a huge problem with Doctors in the US, simply opting out of their practices because of the ACA. We have upwards of 170 trillion in unfunded liabilities from all the benefits politicians gave to buy votes. And on and on...
TrPrado (461 D)
18 Oct 15 UTC
No, you don't understand. In socialism, those industries would be owned by the government (or, if you want to go anarchist, the workers alone with no higher power over them), and the money flows directly to the government. There is no competing against the government, and the government are the producers for the industry. The government can't steal from themselves. This is where your position falls short. They distribute their own wealth and resources among the masses because what else are they going to do with that which the workers helped come by for them? There is no RE-distribution, because in socialism it is simply distribution.
And the ACA isn't socialist because it is competitive against other, private insurance companies. If it were to resemble any facet of socialism, then it would be a nationalized industry, like the NHS in the UK.
TrPrado (461 D)
18 Oct 15 UTC
"0bama doubled the national debt to 17 trillion dollars." A lot of that was actually just choosing to include Bush's war debt onto the already existing debt.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
18 Oct 15 UTC
TrP - Bush has been out of office for almost 8 years. How long do you blame Bush? These are 0bama's wars and 0bama's economy.
TrPrado (461 D)

At the start of Obama's tenure, he tacked the amount of money Bush accrued in debt onto the national debt. That's what I'm referring to.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)

TrP "No, you don't understand." I understand all too well. The government steals the means of production from the producers. Just like Mugabe stole the farms from the farmers, killed many of them, and gave the farms to the workers. Now Zimbabwe cant feed itself, and issues billion dollar notes. The Soviet Union collapsed because they could not produce.

Steve Jobs did not get rich from steeling from anyone. He produces better products that people want.

A capitalist sees a poor man. He reaches into his pocket and gives him $20 to buy lunch. He tells him to come by his factory the next day to apply for a job.

The socialist sees a poor man. He puts the gun of government to the head of the capitalist, and demands $20. He then gives the poor man $5 to buy lunch. And he does that every day.
TrPrado (461 D)

"and gave the farms to the workers." Except not at all how it went down.
"A capitalist sees a poor man. He reaches into his pocket and gives him $20 to buy lunch." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, how devoid of reality are you?
Tyran (914 D)

All capitalists are philanthropists. It's a synonym is it not? I'm sure trump buys thousands of the homeless lunch out of the goodness of his capitalist heart.
TrPrado (461 D)

Gospel of Wealth lacks a hint of reality. Not all rich are as kind as Gates or Carnegie.
Tyran (914 D)
19 Oct 15 UTC
Carnegie was a complete bastard until he was old. He gave back when he was on his way out. All the deaths his business caused and his greed can't just be forgotten.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
19 Oct 15 UTC
TrP "Except not at all how it went down." So explain how it went down. White farmers had their property stolen by the socialists. Given to others. Now Zimbabwe needs to import food. They used to supply food to all of africa
