Name some 'regular' activities you enjoy doing on a daily basis.
I'm going through a lifestyle change (which is going well, by the way) and although I haven't been particularly bored so far, that's probably because I'm still 'recovering' from my old lifestyle. Since I'm sort of coincidentally 'cutting down' on things I enjoy with this change as well, I need some replacement and at the same time I'd love to hear what webdippers do to enjoy themselves.

I think this is a major problem. There needs to be a way to unstar threads you decide you don't like anymore without muting them.

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Round of 64
So after an, um, interesting first match that became a friendly because 1. Neither Shakespeare nor Vergil should be pitted against top foes in the first round and 2. Stephenie Meyer was an embarrassment and was going to get her butt kicked by Virginia Woolf anyway, we start the Round of 64 in proper here. All the matches will be posted in here, we'll move on every 24 hours, assuming my computer doesn't die (anyone know how to fix "'Documents.library-ms' is no longer working?) Anyway!

That's exactly what I've been sayimg, Thucy, but his work isn't fictional enough... I guess...
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
16 Apr 14 UTC
Eh, it's just Thoreau and Laozi, so yeah, since we've already started, why not just let them go, as long as it's their poetry we're evaluating.

Then again, with it 3-3, someone could just vote Balzac over Laozi and end the controversy, lol...
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
That would be ridiculous because Balzac doesn't hold a candle to Laozi.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
And since when was the content of poetry fictional? It's just artistic is all.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
16 Apr 14 UTC
...Poetry's included in a ton of fiction anthologies...

As the events of "The Raven" or "The Highwayman" or "The Lady of Shalott" never happened, but are still great poems?

And doesn't hold a candle to him how? In terms of influence?

If that's the case we'll just end up selecting the oldest people on this list, it can't just be about influence...if it's about quality of writing, well, I haven't read either, so I can't say, but why do you say the person being called "the French Dickens" doesn't hold a candle to Laozi? Seems like a "French Dickens" could probably write a bit to deserve that nickname...
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
No not just influence. Also ingenuity, artistry, and content.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
What I mean is that Laozi isn't the "Chinese" dickens or anyone else for that matter. He is Laozi. The world has never seen his like.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Apr 14 UTC
Are you saying that Laozi can't be judged on Daoist principle which he created and Thoreau can't be judged on Civil Disobedience? If I understand that correctly, that is B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T, my friend.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
Who's saying that?????
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
16 Apr 14 UTC
Obi said "as long as we are evaluating their poetry" which to me says other works for primarily nonfiction writers don't count.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
Just do what that fish guy said and evaluate them however you want. I'm personally going off their entire body of work
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

People can choose to ignore all of the information if they choose, it just makes them uninformed voters. See: America.

I vote Laozi, just based on his poety.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

@bo_sox:

I don't know Laozi well enough to comment there, so I'll answer the question with Thoreau--

You can use the poetry there, and argue that they REFLECT his views...

But you can't use "Civil Disobedience" itself.

The same way you could say Orwell's fiction works reflected his views on real-life politics, but couldn't use his essays on real-life politics, and the same way I said that Eliot's poetry reflected his views on tradition but didn't quote/use "Tradition and the Individual Talent" itself, one of his famous essays on the subject, to make my point.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
meh dont let obi tell you how to vote. his game is out of his hands now
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
16 Apr 14 UTC
I'm just saying it should be based on fiction...take into account a writer's views, but we DID allow in FICTION writers here, Thucy, that was the angle--

Otherwise I'd have nominated other people and others would have, too.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
i already explained what i meant about their artistry, these were no essayists or columnists.

Neither was Plato, Thucy, nor Locke, nor David.

When you nominated Thoreau, you defended him as a poet, implicitly agreeing to the STATED rule that he should be evaluated on that ground.

I move that, if no longer agree to those terms, these two nominations be struck.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
16 Apr 14 UTC
^What he said

Although I think Laozi just pulled ahead to beat Balzac 4-3, if we're keeping him on as a POET?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
meh, whine if you want, i got my poets in there, and livened up y'all's boring pool with poets, women, and easterners.

And if you discount that a person writing in Chinese, what is by the way considered to be some of the most complex Chinese ever written, could be a poet just because his poetry is not perfectly translatable, well, then that's fucked.

If this by Li Po can be considered poetry in its English form then I don't see why Laozi's poetry, far better, should not also be included, even if it is not in English. There are plenty of other non-English writers on your list, Balzac included.

"A Mountain Revelry

To wash and rinse our souls of their age-old sorrows,
We drained a hundred jugs of wine.
A splendid night it was . . . .
In the clear moonlight we were loath to go to bed,
But at last drunkenness overtook us;
And we laid ourselves down on the empty mountain,
The earth for pillow, and the great heaven for coverlet."

If that is poetry then so is:

"Heaven and Earth endure,
By not endowing themselves with life.
Then they can be long-lived.
So the wise place Self last,
And it comes first,
Call it other than themselves,
And it persists.
By not thinking of Self
The personal goal is achieved."

And this:

"When the Way reigns in the land,
Horses go back to ploughing the fields.
When the Way does not reign in the land,
War-horses breed on the frontiers.
There’s no crime worse
Than to pander to one’s desires.
There’s no sickness worse
Than not knowing what is enough.
There’s no greater catastrophe
Than the lust for gain.
Whoever knows what is enough
Will be happy with his fate.

You can know the universe
Without leaving your house.
You can see the ways of heaven
Without looking out of your window.
The further you go
The less you know.
That’s why the wise achieve without moving,
Name what is, without needing to see it,
Accomplish great things without action."

And this:

"The Way of heaven is like stringing a bow.
It depresses the high,
And raises the low.
It takes from excess,
And gives to the lacking.
It’s heaven’s Way
To take from excess
And give to the lacking.
People do otherwise.
They take from those who lack
And give to those with excess.
Who can take his excess
And give it to the realm?
One who knows the Way.
So the wise do good but ask no thanks.
They do their work but claim no merit.
They do not wish to display their virtue."

Well, I guess Laozi wins, 4-3, so he lives to fight (or peacefully meditate) another day.

:p
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Plato, Thucydides, AND Locke were all basically essayists. Non-fiction to the bone.

If by David you mean Psalms, then I see no problem including him, but that's over and done with. Should have nominated him.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Thucy, I love the flip from butthurtness over Vergil to defense of Lao Tzu.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
Vergil is still on the list, no? I never suggested striking him.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
I simply suggested and still suggest that Shakespeare is an order of magnitude his superior.
ghug (5068 D(B))
16 Apr 14 UTC
You did. You suggested that Obi ignore the vote and let Shakespeare win. I suggested a compromise so y'all would stop your bitching. I'm still a bit grumpy about it.

ghug (5068 D(B))

Dude, I love Shakespeare. Dude's a boss. I also totally agree with you here. I don't really know why I'm arguing with you. Vergil's just the best ever. Damn I should have made a Kanye joke.

Fleet at Poland retreat to Ukraine?

Okay, how on earth did Quebec's fleet at Poland manage to retreat to Ukraine despite not sharing a coastal border? Is this a bug or an obscure quirk of the World map? The variant homepage says nothing about any Pol-Ukr canal.

As With Crimea, So Too with Eastern Ukraine...
http://news.yahoo.com/rebels-declare-victory-east-ukraine-vote-self-rule-012033097.html "Organizers in the main region holding the makeshift vote on Sunday said nearly 90 percent had voted in favor." Yes...because when I think "legitimate democratic proceedings," the first thing *I* think of is a "makeshift vote"...and nearly 90% in favor, on such a divisive issue? You couldn't get 90% of people to agree what color the sky is! Will the West act NOW? (No. But let's chat, shall we?)
