Learnt something new about the Dip Rules yesterday...Spaces with 2 Coasts
I may not be the only one but I did not realize that a fleet can support a unit sitting on a coast it cannot access. So for instance, a Fleet in the West Med supported a fleet sitting on the Spanish North Coast. Learn something new every day...

@ATC. Did you retro fix the NMR that happens by just hitting save without recording a move?
ssorenn (0 DX)
18 Feb 15 UTC
Also, I agree that there not only needs to be a way to get you RR back up , but there should be a way to incentivize it
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
18 Feb 15 UTC
Ssorren: Yes. See: http://webdiplomacy.net/recentchanges.php - now users don't get NMRs when they hit ready with all holds.

However, old incorrect NMR stats aren't fixed yet. Stay tuned.

How about ordering the drop-down lists alphabetically to make it easier to find the place you want to move to? This would be especially useful in variants like the world one, where there are dozens of possible convoy orders and it's hard to find the one you want along this seemingly random list.

A feature that may entice more live gaming.
I know its available on PlayDip(ooooo), but why not be able to start a live game for x amount of years and then have the game turn into a regular time turn based game(ie:24,36 or 48) hours

i think more would play live to start(especially FP) that they knew the only had to regulate an hour or so to. When you know you dont have to be obligated to 2-3 hours at a crack, it becomes a more palatable thing to play live
eliwhitney (107 D(G))

How about an audible alarm for when a live game is about to start. Would eliminate first turn NMR's for people waiting, but browsing other sites or doing work.
TheMinisterOfWar (553 D)

Or ther other way round. Decrease the phase length by 20% each phase.
Damn that would be stressful.
-1 to browser windows making noise.
ssorenn (0 DX)
26 Feb 15 UTC
if you want to eliminate NMRs for live games in 01, make all players recheck before game starts

7 people are in for8 pm game, at 7:55 all players would be required to ping in by 8, therefore you know all players are there and ready to start
Automatic cancellation for NMRs in the first turn.

vdiplomacy.net has a "NMR policy" and "Rating requirements" under the advanced settings available.
eliwhitney (107 D(G))

I don't believe NMR on purpose, they get distracted while waiting and then remember too late. I've done it my own self.

My idea would eliminate a lot of 01 NMRs

On another live game note is it possible to get an option where when making a live game a game creator game hit a button that extends the pre-game length by say 30 minutes. This would stop the terrible 6 but not seven with a minute left scenerio and give an extra 30 minutes to find that last person.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
26 Feb 15 UTC
We could do something like that, but it would probably have to be a vote. The nice thing about live games is that you can predict their start time- some players can't start 30 mins later (which is why there's often a drop in sign ups if you remake the game)
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
26 Feb 15 UTC
@ATC- anything I think would be better than nothing. :)
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
27 Feb 15 UTC
The extra 30 minutes thing I think would not be the solution if any of them.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
27 Feb 15 UTC
@ Valis- I have been in situations many times where the game has been a minute from starting with 1 player needed and the one player will tell me "My current game is almost over, I will join after this game." in that situation 30 minutes would be useful.
ssorenn (0 DX)
27 Feb 15 UTC
@ATC. What about the change from live to regular gave after an agreed amount to time ?
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
27 Feb 15 UTC
@ssorenn - the problem I forsee with that is a new player being confused when a game transitions and then countries going into CD because of it. I think that it would work if the option was to expand games under 24 hours to be 24 hours with a button like "Cancel" so that all players have to be aware for it to happen.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
27 Feb 15 UTC
"Extend" would be the button title.
ssorenn (0 DX)
27 Feb 15 UTC
It would work, because somewhere it would have to be explained before so one can join. If you can't read, don't play diplomacy. If you do, no tears for you.
Here's a taken on ssorenn' spring idea and could be used for non live games too. When you join a game you are not "ready" yet. So if a live game is to start at 10pm (created at say 6pm) once you join you are in the gray state of joined but not ready. You could toggle back and forth as needed so if all 7 are there well before the start time the game can start otherwise it waits till the start time. I'm not sure this really solves much for NMRs for live games but I know some people sign up for a game and see a Saturday start date and then sort of don't check back until then. This just seems like something that is already mostly there in the code and could be easy to change. Also, if countries were assigned once everyone joined but the spring 01 didn't strat until everyone was ready this would also allow the spring 01 phase to be different.
CommanderByron (801 D(S))
27 Feb 15 UTC
@ssorenn- "If you can't read, don't play diplomacy." that ignores reality. reality is no matter how much you paste bulletins and rules around a site people learn via trial and error and while in ssorenn's perfect world everyone would read before joining a game; the fact that even with our current, simple, system that has 1 consistent phase length new players consistently CD in games. Realistically making the phase transition a real "advanced setting" would just be more complication to the interface for new users, a turn off to users looking to just "Play a game" and add to the already high number of CDs. For a system imposed to limit mid-game CDs it would do the opposite.... of course that is reality, why don't you tell me how your world works. ;)
Wow autocorrect sucks a take on ssorenn's ping idea...
ssorenn (0 DX)
27 Feb 15 UTC
@CB. From the guy with what, less than 50% RR. New players CD, most likely because they are losing. That's not going to change. Isn't your unit calling you back yet.
