This is probably irrelevant to most of you, but my second daughter just came into the world. Where do I go to share this news? Webdip.
In any event, she's healthy and I am one happy papa.

@Vashta lol what "algorithm" could you possibly have?

Anyway, your post, Vashta, just demonstrates how in the dark we are - anyone could be doing anything for any reason at this point. You, equally could be arguing not to lynch me right now because of reverse psychology to imply you are a good-hearted townie. ANd on and on.

As I said, with no information, this is a 13/18 chance we hurt ourselves unnecessarily, as yebellz also said.

But anyway I already voted. My other question to the pro-lynchers is how we would decide who to lynch. It's a serious question, because I for the life of me cannot think of a good reason to lynch any of you, even the ones who were implying I should be lynched. Most of us are townies - that will not be true in as great a degree for long, and if we decide to lynch, it will probably be to an even lesser degree.
WardenDresden (239 D(B))

@yebellz
Correct, the doctor's save is only overnight.

I don't think who gets killed overnight is going to give us enough information to warrant NOT taking action in our first day. For all we know the mafia will use a RNG to pick targets.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
@ krellin and abge - the mafia frequently targets outspoken people who are not in the mafia, because these are the people who, in the endgame, will work hardest to put the pieces together to lynch them.
TheJok3r (765 D)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Yeah, put yourself in the mafia's shoes. You have a player lobbying to spare them the worry of losing a teammate. Why would you want to off that player? At this point, Thucy surely would not be a target.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
Unless, and I don't mean to accuse too strongly, fasces is right and the pro-lynchers are mostly mafia who know that they can score an extra kill this turn, as it were, especially at the start when their numbers are strong
WardenDresden (239 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
"Most of us are townies - that will not be true in as great a degree for long"

And every passing day means us townies are in a worse predicament. We have to lynch even when the odds are not in our favor because by the time the odds would be in our favor it's already too late.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
I can equally argue to y'all that pro-lynchers are against the town, as the most likely result of a lynch is a death of a townie and one step closer to defeat.

I didn't realize so many of you were gamblers.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
13/18 we hurt ourselves.....and the next day, the odds will be...10/15....and the next day the odds will be 7/12 we hurt ourselves....and when will the odds be acceptable.

You keep on throwing out a fraction, but you have suggested no actual course of action.

How do three dead bodies after the night is through give us a better shot at targeting a mafia member?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
"Somebody making a strong defense can be an indication of somebody with more information than others. In this particular instance, that would indicate a mafia. Whereas, somebody with a lot of doubt figures to look more town. "

I honestly literally do not understand this. The more we lynch when the odds are against us, the sooner we lose. As a rule.
yebellz (729 D(G))
03 Apr 14 UTC
@TheJok3r: or you might have a mafia player that would like to see us roll the dice, knowing that we're more likely to kill someone they want dead (14/18) than a member of the team (4/18). The numbers change slightly since they are gunning for the serial killer too.
TheJok3r (765 D)
03 Apr 14 UTC
@Thucy: To clarify on my "strong defense" remark. I'm suggesting that if someone in particular was decided to be lynched and someone is really coming to their defense saying they think it is wrong and are very emphatic, it can be an indication of guilt. Especially when nobody can really be sure of anyone's alignment.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
My suggested course of action is to pay close attention to who is killed tonight, and then observe what the victim was saying during this day's proceedings, and then begin to make conjectures and observe reactions, thereby suggesting a lynch candidate.
@Thucy: Well, I am trying to think about what if i were a mafia member, which, if I were, I would be likely to just blend in and quietly support an idea from time to time and vote. While I am sure some of the mafia will be outspoken, there is, just as good a chance it is a misguided towns person. I do have a person in mind, but I am waiting for almost everyone to post before proclaiming it, as new information may change my mind.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Thucy still hasn't provided a suggestion as to how his strategy helps anyone catch the mafia. He has just suggested....well, his latest suggestion is that "the outspoken will be targeted". Sounds mildly like a threat....so he's now discouraging open discourse....except, of course, for his own continuous flapping of the fingers across the keyboard...
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
I would pretty strongly defend anyone who was accused of being mafia at this point, since there is a very small chance they actually are, unless they had said something significantly incriminating. I hope that wouldn't case me as mafia in your eyes.
krellin (80 DX)
03 Apr 14 UTC
Thucy - the dead victim...he has as much information as you and I have right now...therefore, knowing nothing, whatever he says will be meaningless.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
On the contrary, krellin, the more we all talk, the less threatening to the mafia we all seem. I encourage more discussion, not less.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
No, it's not what the victim says krellin, the victim is dead. It's what he SAID before dying. You can begin to ask - why was he killed?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
The dead victim isn't even allowed to post, by the way, just so everyone is clear.
And we may as well taking this thinking one step further, how would PE choose the roles, perhaps for most he used a random number generator, but with some of the personalities we have involved, it would be hard for him to not put certain people in important roles.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Apr 14 UTC
Anyway since krellin is here this is all too likely to devolve into a shouting match that will muddy the water more than anything. I will leave you gentlemen to it tonight - I hope cooler heads prevail.
Okay Thucy, I hope we shall be able to have good discussions in the future, good bye for tonight.

@krellin, but we can gain more info as the game progresses.

The cop and doctor both play huge roles in gathering info.
TheJok3r (765 D)
03 Apr 14 UTC
It certainly could. I have a very different approach to day 1 than you do. While opinions can be formed and people can defend somebody, to be very emphatic about such defense just screams suspicious. It strikes me as somebody really trying to accomplish the goal of, "See? Look at how I defended this guy who was town." While it could be a demonstration of concern, it can also be an indication of covering something up.

Also, I'd say a reason why I would be leaning towards you not being mafia is your willingness to debate your points and keep putting yourself out there. You certainly are not shying away from being the focal point of this debate. I would for the most part think that someone who is mafia would want to shy away from the spotlight and not draw too much attention. So you do have that going for you from my perspective.
Holy storm of posts, Batman. Just to stake my place, I'm in this game. I didn't even realize it was starting today, let alone almost three hours and five pages of posts ago. I can't write at length now, but will later tonight. Don't lynch me, tempting as my name might make it sound.

/out of game Thucy, you have now personaly attacked me for outside game reasons twice, I'm going to say this exactly once - Fuck off with the personal attacks. My arguments are just as valid as yours, and nothing is 'devolving' because I expressed an/opinion in the game - an opinion which matches abge's by the way.

If you are persnally too immature to play the game without bring in outside bullshit, then bow out and give your spot to YJ or someone else mature enough to play. You truly are a disappointment. /end out of game

It's Maple's Alter Ego! (But Seriously--Should Serling Be Forced to Sell the Team?)
http://nba.si.com/2014/04/29/donald-sterling-adam-silver-nba-owners-reaction/ To be clear--this is HYPOTHETICAL. There's nothing in the NBA Constitution that gives the commissioner the right to do this, so this is more just a thought experiment--say that power existed, and Adam Silver COULD force Serling to sell the team based on his repeated racist comments over the years, with this last doozy being the kicker. If the power existed, SHOULD the man lose his team over this?

Gunboat game for the reliable but poor
I'm tired of the NMRs and CDs that are far too common i the low-bet games I can afford to play. I'd love to play in the big-pot games with the best players, but I don't have the $ (and, hey, I'm not that good anyway). If there are other middle of the road players who feel the same way, perhaps we can organize a password-protected game (or two if there's enough interest) of reliable gunboaters. More below.

Phase length for FTF games?
I've been thinking about putting together a face to face game for some new players (friends who don't play diplomacy.... yet). But, I've never played FTF myself - so:

What kind of phase lengths do people use? I assume that there's also a time or turn cap too (eg game ends in 1910)?

Underage Drinking
Two IU players busted for underage drinking, one I know well. I guess the shocking part of their arrests is that the police in B-town are such assholes that they go around hunting for underage drinkers on Little 500 Day.

Please tell me no one on webDip suffered until 21 before their first drink.

Woody Allen, child molestor[?], given a lifetime achievement award.
So, one of my courses this semester is about "contemporary issues" and one of the issues I'm supposed to debate during our final is whether Woody Allen deserved the lifetime achievement award given to him by the Golden Globes. I've been assigned to argue on the side that he should not have gotten the award. And I want to hear what the people of WebDip think. Source links in the thread.
