Hey, I need two more people for a classic, very slow (7 day), WTA, full press, 50 point ante game. There are some newbies and some veterans (gryncat and I), all are welcome. http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=82423

Whoever you are that wants a pause - how are we supposed to talk to each other to unpause later in an anonymous gunboat? That's why I'm not voting pause and I'm sorry if I'm a dick.

Book of Mormon
Just got back from NYC where I watched Book of Mormon. If you're a fan of South Park, I cannot recommend you watch this highly enough.

There were a few people there who clearly had no idea what was happening and were horrified; it made it all the better.

Game Glitch
link: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=81163#gamePanel

I believe there was a glitch in this game. As you can see, in spring 1904, the fleet in rumania attacked the fleet in the black sea which was convoying an army into sev. this attack should have prevented the convoy even though it had support from Armenia.

Gotta be BS
Why are some people such idiots?

If a game starts w/ two CD's, and 1 other player misses a move for some reason, who in their right mind wouldn't just cancel or draw that game for sake of balance?

Ghost Ranking
So someone explain to me how a player like Dizzy (userID=34274) can jump to ghost ranking of 11 just from playing live games, when great players like Ivo, Crazyter, uclabb etc actually play real ones

Guys,
To judge new players on this site you should use the Carnivore rating (see section 1 on my profile). That's much more instructive than GR. Just saying.

1. Dizzy
2. Yellowjacket
3. zultar
4. Babak
5. President Eden
6. The Hanged Man
7. jmo, Agent K??????

Pool: ghug, goldfinger0303

This line up is looking to be rather fearsome. I don't know if I am ready to donate my GR to such a group. I do find it interesting that people who have called out Dizzy and Yellowjacket have not responded at all to this thread/challenge/invitational.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Feb 12 UTC
redhouse carnivore rating is kinda bs because it doesn't take into account the quality of players you go up against.

If a guy like me can find himself in the top 100 of GR (as I will if they ever come OUT) after only 8 games played, it's not fair to say GR is too slow in rewarding new players.

jmo is a loudmouth sissy lol.

29 Feb 12 UTC
You're BS yourself and you couldn't beat me with 5 multis YJ.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
29 Feb 12 UTC
Yeah, the carnivore system only rewards win/draw ratio more than quality of the players. You and Dizzy would top the damn list if we go with that. Thank goodness for GR (if it ever comes out...........)
redhouse1938 (429 D)
29 Feb 12 UTC
How is the quality of the player not 100% correlated to his win/draw ratio?
MrcsAurelius (3051 D(B))
29 Feb 12 UTC
Be careful criticizing the carnivore system. It might eat you up.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
29 Feb 12 UTC
They are not. If you go through the top say 50 people, you will see a variety of win/draw ratio. Some people only win a single digit percent of the time. There are plenty of players with 30-50% win rate alone whose GR are nowhere in the top 100.
There is to be sure a correlation but it is not by any stretch of the imagination a 100%. If you are willing to calculate their carnivore and compare that with GR, there would be a correlation but I don't think it is as high as you want it to be. You are a physicist, go do a regression analysis on it.
MrcsAurelius (3051 D(B))
29 Feb 12 UTC
They just explained that redhouse. Go try a game with only good players (top 100 GR for example) for a change. ;) I assure you, you will notice the difference.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
29 Feb 12 UTC
I'm not sure they'll have me MrcsAurelius... :( My GR is 338...
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
29 Feb 12 UTC
Yeah and your system ranks you towards the top...
Case in point. :)
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
29 Feb 12 UTC
On a more serious note, if you are willing to calculate the carnivore scores for the top 50 people and email them to me, we can study the correlation together.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
29 Feb 12 UTC
I did some calculations ages ago when I tried to set up the Carnivore tournament, but work got the best of me then so I didn't have time to set up the tournament. Once I'm out of my current work-surge I'll be setting it up again though.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
29 Feb 12 UTC
And I'd also be happy to beat you zultar. You stabbed me several times in the one game we played together and you got a very meager 4 way out of it. Time to try again!

Hmmm, I wasn't going to play anymore games till the summer but this is too good to pass up. Add me in if there's still room.
MrcsAurelius (3051 D(B))
29 Feb 12 UTC
I can vouch for you redhouse, dont know how much that's worth ;) His GR doesn't reflect his skill, he is far better than his rating suggests. But better yet, he is also very dedicated to a game.. Always answers messages and such, very talkative and involved.

@redhouse: I know why your GR is low, its because you only organize games yourself and don't say no to bad players that want to join. You should consider joining someone else's, who has a good line up. Or be more selective. ;) Try one of the MM invitationals for example :) But maybe you did and you can't tell me. ;)

@zultar: I am interested in that result! :)
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

"You're BS yourself and you couldn't beat me with 5 multis YJ. "

LOL might just be true. Fortunately, if I used carnivore I'd just play King Atom and 5 of his Virginia educated friends and rack up solos left and right. There wouldn't be any need to play you :P

And you are ranked 338TH in GR, not 338. Big difference :P

redhouse1938 (429 D)
29 Feb 12 UTC
That's too much praise MrcsAurelius, but thank you very much.
If you're up for a 24h, classic, WTA then I'm happy to set it up. Yellowjacket and zultar should join as well, but alas, neither will have the courage. Too bad I can't take their points that easily.

If I'd have to describe my courship style in Diplo terms it would probably be gunboat, Ancient Mediterranean, Winner Takes All. Still interested?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
29 Feb 12 UTC
Ok, I think we have the full list now as long as everyone on the list can agree to start in a couple of weeks per the original request:

1. Dizzy (11)
2. Yellowjacket (255)
3. Zultar (87)
4. Babak (2)
5. President Eden (15)
6. Uclabb (14)
7. Jmo (19)

If for some reasons you can't agree to start the game in a couple of weeks, then the first dib goes to The Hanged Man (20).
I don't think points matter to anybody in this group, so we can decide on that near the start date. So, WTA anon 36-48 hour phase? My inclination is 48 hour phase, but I will go with the majority.
Please feel free to chime in.

@redhouse, yeah that game we played together had two interesting things happening: the unbreakable AI alliance (one of the strongest alliances I have ever seen) and Russia being busy with RL, which distracted him from many good opportunities because he could have dominated the Balkans with his fleets and GR would have overwhelmed the AI since France was doing an excellent job at keeping Italy at bay.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
29 Feb 12 UTC
I'd prefer 24 hour phases, but I don't think my opinion really matters haha.

36 would be fine, 48 seems a bit long.

I should mention now that I will be out of country for 2 weeks in early may, and may need pause, so if that's gonna be a problem we should figure it out now.

zultar (4180 DMod(P))

@YJ, yeah, this list does seem a bit intimidating, but I think we both expect our GR to climb up in Jan and Feb.
By the way, I am willing to cut YJ out of the invitational for a top 50 player if he/she promises to ally with me through the entire game. :)
uclabb (589 D)
29 Feb 12 UTC
I would, in general, vote for 36 hour turns, but 48 is fine too. Points don't matter to me.

Ive been trying a strategy when I get Austria to surprise attack Italy off the bat. Ive mostly failed. Does anyone know of good results where Austria takes on Italy and succeeds in the first few years or is it always better to just go east and hope for a friendly Italy?

In-Game Notes possibility?
Hey. Is there any chance that a notes function could be added to games? I think it would help some of us that don't generally write out elaborate EoG's to have the ability to include something, even if it is just terse notes like:

Russia didn't get bounced in Sweden in '01, what was Germany thinking?
