Gang deaths are minimal in relation to other deaths.
Can you find a figure for how many people were killed in gang related incidents in Chicago? I'm pretty sure that the total deaths from non-gang related incidents is more. I believe that Chicago is more densely populated than Melbourne as well.
It should actually be "Guns don't kill people, People kill people easily with guns". Murders done with other weapons are much more preventable and the homicide rate is much less in countries where guns are hard to find.
In fact homicides per capita according to NationMaster (I've pulled off non-western democracies, a number of other similar polls show slight differences but more or less the same results):
#24 United States: 0.042802 per 1,000 people
#30 Finland: 0.0283362 per 1,000 people
#33 Portugal: 0.0233769 per 1,000 people
#43 Australia: 0.0150324 per 1,000 people
#44 Canada: 0.0149063 per 1,000 people
#46 United Kingdom: 0.0140633 per 1,000 people
#47 Italy: 0.0128393 per 1,000 people
#48 Spain: 0.0122456 per 1,000 people
#49 Germany: 0.0116461 per 1,000 people
#51 Netherlands: 0.0111538 per 1,000 people
#52 New Zealand: 0.0111524 per 1,000 people
#53 Denmark: 0.0106775 per 1,000 people
#54 Norway: 0.0106684 per 1,000 people
#55 Ireland: 0.00946215 per 1,000 people
#56 Switzerland: 0.00921351 per 1,000 people
Isn't it funny how the US and Finland find themselves on top with their easy access to firearms? I can tell you that Finland has a much less intrusive gang-culture as well.
After that you see Australia (with relatively recent barring of guns) and Canada (lots of guns smuggled from the US - a common political issue there).
Thats pretty clear disproof of the "guns don't kille people, people kill people" refrain. Besides Switzerland (The outlier ultimately) the easier access to guns shows a clear correlation with high homicide rates.
