Neutral units in World Diplomacy?
I just found something peculiar - http://webdiplomacy.net/cache/games/1858/185865/11-small.map - what's wrong with this map?

Is it me, or is the Modern Diplomacy map really bad?
The starts are more unbalanced than in any other variant, and builds anywhere means there is no incentive to defend your homeland, and lessens strategic depth as there is also no incentive to try your best to hold your ground when you've extended relatively far from where you started. I've played this variant a couple times, but it keeps disappointing me. What's the appeal?

I'm not purely trying to detract here, I sincerely want a counterargument.

Public Non-Anonymous Games taking a
With some crackdown activity by the Mods on multis in the past few months, it looks like the number of public non-anonymous games has taken a bit of a dip, suggesting that there were indeed quite a few multi-account efforts in these games. I for one appreciate the policing of such cheating.

F2F Game in Chicago Area
Hey guys, I'm going to be in the greater Chicago area from like January 2nd until January 12th or so. There aren't many webdipers located around me, but I figure there's probably 5 or 6 in Chicago. Would anyone be interested in playing a face to face game if I can find enough people?

I already made this one: gameID=186783

Introducing 2 friends to Diplomacy
Hey all. I've got two friends that I play nerdy games with most sundays and we are looking to start a game here. One is familiar with the game the other is not. I'm looking for some players who will invest some time to give them a good game. More details inside (and I didn't pretype it, so chill)

What is your lineage?
Octavious invited me here from Facebook diplomacy, so he brought me into this world.
I believe I am the one who introduced CAPT Brad to this place, so I claim parentage on that account.

Who would you regard as the finest players whom you have played with on webDiplomacy?
As I said before, thus far the two best players whom I have played with are McFly and Kearns892. I have played with players who are ranked higher in the "ghost ratings," but that doesn't mean anything as it also accounts for prevalence of play.

I would be interested in hearing other people's responses.

Apparently you didn't realize that they didn't NMR until I had destroyed the campaign.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Dec 16 UTC
Italy went in 1902, Turkey in 1904, and Russia in 1905. They were all quite capable of kicking your ass when they went into CD. There was no "campaign" to fight against. The only reason you and France were ever as strong as you were is because your neighbors weren't even there.
civwarbuff (305 D)
09 Dec 16 UTC
Bo, you have no idea what you are talking about. I am not referring to Italy, I am referring to Turkey and Russia and I had destroyed the campaign by the time Turkey went NMR.
civwarbuff (305 D)
09 Dec 16 UTC
Of course I benefitted greatly when they vegan to NMR in terms of the size that I was able to attain, but I had already destroyed the campaign at that point and I was out of immediate danger.

You really hadn't. T/R were still in place to wreck you
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Dec 16 UTC
Russia was still in Galicia when he CDed. Turkey was in a strong and easily defensible position. You hadn't killed anything. And even if you had, there is absolutely no guarantee you could have done so without the Italian CD. That's not a game worth being so prideful about because it's just an ugly game.
goldfinger0303 (3157 DMod)

For three turns from 1903 until the Turkish CD your line was completely untenable. Lack of coordination between R/T is the only reason you didn't lose Bud or Greece right away
ghug (5068 D(B))
09 Dec 16 UTC
Turkey can't win with that much of a French presence in the Med, ssorenn. The funny part of that game was when uclabb tried to get me to two way with him.
civwarbuff (305 D)
09 Dec 16 UTC
This is pathetic. They could no longer breakthrough unless Turkey got fleets all the way underneath me which was going to take years to accomplish and I was propelling France around the corner. They dropped because I had destroyed the offensive.
civwarbuff (305 D)
09 Dec 16 UTC
No, the reason is because I guessed their attacks precisely for three consecutive turns.
But, in seriousness, the finest players to me are

Mate, you didn't even protect against the most likely attacks. You won because they were really bad players. In no universe does turkey not tap Serbia fall 1903. You would've lost Bud then. A competent Russia would've had a unit in Bohemia and a spare in Ukraine. In which case you'd also be dead.
civwarbuff (305 D)
09 Dec 16 UTC
You are really annoying me now. I agonized for hours over the attacks and I anticipated their moves exactly based on the information that I had to work with. I did so for three consecutive moves. Furthermore, I pulled a miracle in drawing a game that France had won, based again on anticipating his moves exactly repeatedly. So, you can sit down.
civwarbuff (305 D)

Furthermore, I am not going to spend too much energy rebutting rude, snide interjections from players who have 9% win ratings and 20%+ defeats.

@civwarbuff - you know who you're talking to, right? Win % is meaningless unless you know what quality of players those wins were against. He didn't have time to win a bunch of games with randoms because he spent 3 years playing the same game against some of the best players on the site.

Replacement Thread
Seriously Mods (or whomever) -- we need a replacement thread where people will sign up to be on a waiting list to take-over positions, etc.

Got a player in need of some help and can't find a replacement. Throw 'em some points or something for helping out...but this NOT being able to find a replacement for a game is....well....THIS is part of the problem with this site...just sayin'
