Boston area residents: Stay at home today!
There's a developing and dangerous situation in Watertown, Cambridge, Belmont, Waltham, Boston. Authorities have shut down the MBTA and asked for businesses to close, and people to stay at home.
See the news for more details (one of the bombing suspects is apparently dead, the other is on the run).
Just in case some people check this website more often than their news.

A lot of focus on the Boston attack was on the two deceased people
I found that horrible, particularly the eight-year old boy. But let's not forget the people who are seriously injured, missing a leg, or an arm, or even both legs. I deeply hope the people who are now being hunted by the FBI are the ones who did it and that they will pay dearly for their crime. Them and whoever helped them do it.

Any Gun Enthusiasts on here?
I am curious as to what the best, reasonably priced (up to 3 or 4 thousand) Assault Rifle (apparently no longer an acceptable term, but we all know what I'm talking about here) would be. To be clear, I am talking a fully automatic weapon for guerrilla/insurgent type warfare. Something that can take a beating, won't need constant replacements after field use, etc. Legality within the U.S. is not a concern, black market availability is.

New SyFy Series: Defiance - Your thoughts?
I watched it last night and found the production values and special effects to be quite excellent, the acting sufficient, the story good (although the whole "Romeo and Juliet" story is... well... obvious derivative is obvious), and the concept enjoyable (although derivative as well - think Firefly meets Babylon 5).

"Can you imagine if those bombs had been detonated at Fenway Park, or some other sporting venue?"

It wouldn't have happened. Spectating the Boston Marathon is something done without regular security checks.

One report says that they are pulling ball bearings out of people. What I can't understand is that if you use ball bearings, you are looking to cause maximum damage to many people. But the race was mostly over by the time it went off. They said that 3 hours earlier and it would have been much worse. Why then?
Celticfox (100 D(B))
16 Apr 13 UTC
We don't have enough evidence to make that conclusion Jim. We don't know where the bombs were located or what kind they were. There could of been a million different reasons depending on those things.

"It wouldn't have happened. Spectating the Boston Marathon is something done without regular security checks."

1. I bet THAT will change now...

2. A horrible way to invoke it, but when it comes to terrorism, "Never say never"...

I'd have thought hijacking planes and crashing them into NYC and DC would never happen...it's the terrible thing about terrorism--where there's a will, there's a way, and whoever did this had the will in the WORST possible kind of way.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

@jim .. they found at least two more bombs that didn't go off. These weren't "good" terrorists (for lack of a better word).

I talked with a guy at my school named Don Sachtleben (something like that), a former FBI and ATF agent, who essentially told us what we could use to make an explosive, though of course he didn't go into enough detail to tell us anything sensitive. Still, he made it quite clear that it really doesn't take much material or brain power to make a strong explosive, and the fact that these guys could only get two of their four (that number is probably going to be higher, by the way) to go off makes me think that they were quite bad at this.

Another option would be to say that they were poorly timed or were targeting a specific group of runners/spectators. That's what the investigation would uncover.

(I'm anxious to hear what they'll do to mark the event at the Dodger game and what Vin Scully will say at the start of the ballgame...granted, it's just a ballgame...but this is also Vin Scully, he has a way of knowing what to say...)
jimgov (219 D(B))

From CNN - Doctors are "pulling ball bearings out of people in the emergency room," the expert said, suggesting the bombs were designed to propel shrapnel.

You only throw shrapnel to rip through bodies. Thus the hand grenade. Maybe not the final say, but a pretty good guess if nothing else.
jimgov (219 D(B))
16 Apr 13 UTC
I'm not going to jump to any conclusions, but I would not be surprised if this was another one of those home grown terrorists. Not working for anyone, just some crazy dude. It could be anything up to and including state sponsored terrorism of course, but it would not surprise me in the least.

Yes, I'm fine and everyone I know is fine. Thanks.

I actually had to go into Boston to pick up my gf from Logan.

There were a few police cars booking it like I'd never seen on the Pike. There were a couple helicopters and something that wasn't a helicopter in the skies. There were also police barricades all over the city keeping people out of the 15 block crime scene.

Other than that, things seemed pretty normal around Logan, which I was surprised and impressed by, considering it had been grounded only an hour earlier.
jimgov (219 D(B))

@abge - Are flights leaving Logan? I knew that they were being allowed to land.

@jim ... I sincerely hope the media doesn't get a hold of the name of that person because they'll never let it go. They ought to make me remember the victims and stop insisting that the most sinister crimes are the ones that get you a place in history.

@jacobcfries -- Oh, I understand empathy just find. I also recognize that while you are all "being empathic" right now, this thread is less about empathy than it is a series of posts giving the latest gory details.

Give me a fucking break hypocrites.

I ALSO understand that by next week, you won't even be thinking about this as the news cycle will have moved on to something else, and without the media telling you what to be sad about, you will find some other media-suggested emotion to wear on your face, you good little sheep, you.

Again...I ask...how many of you even *KNOW* what is going on in Afganistan today, let alone who has recently died in Afghanistan? And yet you claim to have such deep feelings for human tragedy...

@bo_sox - I may or may not be feeling for what is going on in Boston. I'm just not going to make a great public display about it as you are. If I am going to pray about it, I will not announce it so that I can get my pat on the back for having the correct social response. etc. etc. etc.

@bo_sox - there are murders and mayhem in Detroit every day on the news. People who's lives are TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. i wonder...do you cry for all the victims of murder and mayhem in Detroit every day? Or Chicago? Or L.A.?

Or does that have to be a particular group death count before you can muster enough passion to give a fucking damn, you hypocrite.

looks suspiciously like those terrorist attacks that were done in italy. that the media now admits were carried out by nato. we need to keep in mind that this could be something similar. but whatever it is, it is what those people wanted. they will be able to clamp down on security in america even more. and keep the average american in fear. lets see who is blamed. if it is somebody who is antigovernment then i will know there is something going on.

Allegedly, several more bombs have been found undetonated. This seems to imply a small group/lone wolf rather than a foreign terrorist organization.

i am also suspicious that the second bomb went off at the jfk library. they want that word to be associated with terrorism i guess so that the public forgets the coverup there.

anyway i just dont want to hear that police arrested foreigners in vans with pictures of the bombs going off at the marathon and another group cheering with cameras pointed precisely where the explosions would occur. and then be released and sent home where they go on television and say 'we were there to document the event'. as happened on 9/11 with those mossad agents.

"Allegedly, several more bombs have been found undetonated. This seems to imply a small group/lone wolf rather than a foreign terrorist organization."

Sometime a foreign terrorist organization carried it out with extra undetonated bombs to deceive us for further attacks. The bottom line is, it's a mind game, nobody can tell exactly what's going on. I am surprised USA has been doing such a great job to prevent another 9/11. The whole country is so vast, there are so many vulnerable points. I personally feel that it's indefensible. The best policy is to reduce conflict and hatred. Reduce the list of potential enemies.

I am deplored to see many of my friends and coworkers are into consumption, which means a lot of resources in the world are being transported into USA. Such inequality will breed resentment, hatred. I am a Zen guy, I don't need the materials to be happy. A couple good Diplomacy games with back-stabbing an annoying ally is my source of happiness.

In the case of Islamic terrorism I don't think it is because they resent America's wealth. Many terrorists come from middle class families themselves, and some Islamic countries are very wealthy.

I think they do resent perceived American influence upon their governments and a perceived attack on their culture. Many Islamists see their own governments as puppets of the United States. They are also motivated the avenge those who have been killed in the recent wars.

All of the above said - I shouldn't be so quick to assign blame to Islamists. Do they know who was responsible yet?
