Suggestions
So, I probably haven't been here long enough to be talking, but I was reading a thread someone linked about wanting the ability to do multilateral messaging, and I had an idea I thought might be nice, so I figured I would say it here as well as a couple other things I think might be cool.

World Diplomacy IX: Map discrepancy
I note that on the map for World Diplomacy IX, the Bering Strait is labelled BrS on the right, and BSt on the left, the main variant map: http://www.variantbank.org/results/rules/w/world8-2.gif

Lists it as: BrS, it should reflect this.

gunboat strategy.
italies why are you always so dumb. what appeals to you so much about opening against austria. why cant one italy even one ever in a gunboat try to actually ally with austria. in the last like 10 games ive played her italy has opened against austria. you almost always end up sucking as a result while allying with austria often fares so much better.

Pause Etiquette Question/Opinions
I'd like to hear from the community regarding a pause etiquette issue. If a game is paused because someone is unable to log on for a certain time period, is it wrong to communicate with the other powers? I have always felt that it is unfair to discuss tactics while someone else is not there. It seems underhanded. On the other hand, I worry that I am putting myself at a disadvantage if other powers talk during a pause and I do not. I'd like to hear others thoughts about this.

Do NOT Post Cheating Accusations in the Forum
I'm really sick of that crap. It's not that hard to email the mods, and you'll get a much more expedient response by doing so.

And while I'm at it, use the "Advertise Your Live Games Here" thread for just that. Don't start new threads. Some people still don't get that simple idea.

woah woah woah!
I said GENUINE language, not a non-fictional one. I meant that it is not babble or a cypher.

As a matter of fact, it is a conlang of my devising, and not quite finished
(but hint: a good percentage of the words are not a priori).

And Buthyr Bohabyr IS its name!

Should I post another text sometime?

I think he might mean that most of the words aren't original to his language, but borrowed or inspired by another language.

mmm... now that i see there is a specific mean for "a priori" in languages, it turns out is exactly the opposite...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Umm...Not Rosetta Stone the software, Rosetta Stone as in a translation into a language we know.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

they had a meaning prior to the language itself... most languages develop over time and hence the meaning of the words is not defined to begin with it is defined by use.

i suggest you do translate into a language we know (and by we i mean human kind) whether constructed or fictional, a language which isn't know soley to you... That may re-stimulate interest.

I also suggest we develop a language without any a priori words. (though i suppose the gun boat players have/are developing a language without any words, a means of communication with limited vocab and meaning which varies with context...)

Still a rosetta free language which has no meaning to begin with and does not allout-of-language text/speech (but does allow emoticons)

Baumhauer - a genuine language would have root elements and not just steal words from othe rlanguages. Sindarin and Quenyan are genuine languages, but you can't just take French and Russian and English and Italian and German and Portuguese and... and just throw them all together and call it a language. It needs to have rules established that are consistent across the language for tenses, plurality, etc.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Feb 11 UTC
And I feel Baumhauer just wasted all of ours time.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Feb 11 UTC
heh yeah cause English is a consistent language.

It has rules of grammar with just a few exceptions. Does your fictional in your head language have them?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
02 Feb 11 UTC
Just to play devil's advocate: would you consider Klingon or Tolkien's Elvish to be a genuine language?
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Feb 11 UTC
Elvish, yes. I said Quenyan and Sindarin. Professor Tolkien was a linguist and his words have roots and the is a set of grammatical rules. In fact Druagnar (ny name) come from Wolf (Draug) and fire (nar, although I don't include the umlaut or diacritic or whatever the ^ above the 'a' is called) just as Narsil and Draugluin use these words consistently for their roots.

While I can interpret Kilngon with a dictionary and recognize it when I see it, I don't think it has all the rules to properly qualify as a genuine language. But then it was made up by several sci-fi writers over time and not a professor of linguistics.
Kind.of.slow (746 D)

The rule is, boy, don't get into a gunfight with a sword.

Rosetta Stone situational translation: don't get into a discussion with people that is waaay more involved in the subject than you.

@Kind

Who are you talking to?

@Draug

Maybe I missed something, but I don't see how you know his doesn't have these things.

figlesquidge (2131 D)
02 Feb 11 UTC
@abge - I would be VERY surprised if Elvish didn't meet the 'axioms' of language given Tolkien made the languages before the stories. As said, he was a linguist.

@Kind.of.slow

I believe you're looking for "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight." Personally, the best is "Don't bring a spoon to a knife fight." Better imagery, in my opinion. Anyway, I lost interest in the original intent of the thread many posts ago. I can post a load of gibberish myself, but that's not really what I call entertainment.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@figle

I don't disagree. I was just wondering how we know this language doesn't also?
figlesquidge (2131 D)
02 Feb 11 UTC
@Abge - we don't. However, I postulate that (whatever requirements there may be for a language to exist) unless part of its definition says "And anything I haven't defined is the same as <###>" there will be things it doesn't do that it must.
That said, I don't quite know why I'm defending a position I haven't taken :P

I was right about the name of the language! Yay!
orathaic (1009 D(B))
02 Feb 11 UTC
i don't know why everyone's moaning instead of jumping on the opportunity to create our own language from scratch.

where the meaning is defined soley by use, and if someone else takes up your meaning incorrectly you're not able to correct them... except by using more language they've just mis-interpreted... (which is so hard that i allow the addition of 'grunts' in the form of emoticon)

as i understand it, Klingon is now taught in a certain US university. I don't know if anyone teaches elvish... (were there really only two tongues? obviously the man-speech, tree-speech and possibly dwarf speech were there too, but only two elvish tongues?)

And @Firewolf, hello.

From Wikipedia...

Author J. R. R. Tolkien created many languages for his Elves, which eventuated in the creation of a mythology (expounded in his books), complete with races, to speak the tongues he had constructed. His interest was primarily philological, and he said his stories grew out of his languages. The languages were the first thing Tolkien created for his mythos, starting with what he originally called "Qenya", the first primitive form of Elvish. This was later called Quenya (High-elven) and is one of the two most complete of Tolkien's languages (the other being Sindarin, or Grey-elven). The phonology, vocabulary and grammar of Quenya and Sindarin are strongly influenced by Finnish and Welsh, respectively. In addition to these two, he also created several other (partially derived) languages.

Also from Wikipedia...

A small number of people are capable of conversing in Klingon. Its vocabulary, heavily centered on Star Trek-Klingon concepts such as spacecraft or warfare, can sometimes make it cumbersome for everyday use. For instance, while there are words for transporter ionizer unit (jolvoy') or bridge (of a ship) (meH) there is currently no word for bridge in the sense of a crossing over water. Nonetheless, mundane conversations are common among skilled speakers.[2]

The Russian Revolution, 1917
I've got a class on the subject above, and I've got a 10-12 page paper to write in the same topic. I was wondering if the webdip community has any ideas on what I could write about. Just keep in mind that it needs to be at least ten pages and the scope is revolutionary activity in 1917 only, the Civil war in 1918 and later is off-limits. That being said, any suggestions welcome.
