Apologies
Hi all-
I don't think I NMR'd at all, but my apologies for being MIA since Saturday. I was unexpectedly hospitalized. Now I am resting and spending time with love ones after a few scary days, but I will catch up on my press I promise.

TiresiasBC (388 D)
15 Oct 09 UTC
I can't think of any other reason for the numbers, either. The BC is just something I added to my username back when Tiresias was taken on another website years ago, and I've stuck with it.

In Greek myth, Tiresias is a blind prophet who is, as a rule, ignored, but how he became both blind and a prophet is the interesting part.

Zeus and Hera had a tiff about whether men or women more enjoyed sex. So they turned Tiresias into a woman so he could find out. When they asked him, he told them that women experienced ten times the sexual enjoyment of men. Hera was furious and blinded him, but Zeus, happy the argument went his way, gave him "second sight," the gift of prophecy, in compensation

Myths are a rich tapestry. ;-]
Gunmaster G-9 (162 D)
15 Oct 09 UTC
Gunmaster G-9 is the name of a character from some really really bad Bollywood movies of the '80s, played by an actor named Mithun. He was this ridiculous James Bond knock-off, and his movies are so campy that they're awesome.

Here's a clip in the villain's lair where the villain destroys New York and reanimates a corpse named Jango.

I created this username for Warcraft 3, my first online video game. I wanted something semi-insulting, but original. I thought it was fun, since I got around the block of the word lesbians, by using a lower case l instead of a uppercase I.

I consider myself a Lotr obsessor. Sindarin was the language of the gray elves of Beleriand. Orcs spoke various languages, possibly including some Sindarin. Maybe this is what you meant?

Jamie you just enjoy being insulting huh? and to think i was highly respectful of your posts just a few months back.

i used to use Esgalfe, which meant 'rare friend' in the elvish tongue of tolkien's world, it was a name given to me by a friend in middle school... but then i started using Khaine for online purposes, because if was the god of blood for the dark elves of the warhammer world... then about 5-6 years ago, I realized that Babak was a far cooler name... Babak was a legendary figure in Iranian history who fought against the invading Arab Muslims in the 7th century... he lead a band of guerrilla fighters that beat back the Arabs for almost two decades... and when he was finally caught, legend has it that his hands were chopped off, and as the Arabs laughed at him for being 'pale with fear', he rubbed the blood on his face as a last act of defiance.

so essentially, i decided with such a cool real name... why should I try to use a fake name ;)

@denis - he also spells it with an e instead of an a... (Because his name is Stephen, not Stephan (pronounced differently).

I also spell my name the same way. OH NO NOW YOU ALL KNOW MY REAL FIRST NAME! (I have to admit I miss Diplomat and his weird paranoia about anyone asking him for any personal details of his life).

@urallLESBlANS - One of the orcs at Cirith Ungol was named that and considering all of the names throughout Mordor are in Sindarin, that was more the point. Yes, the grey are the origin of Sindarin, but Tolkien used it a lot for naming things, places, and people. I always found it odd that orcs weren't named in Black Speech... Even the names of Mordor and Sauron come from Sindarin and Quenyan respectively.
Akroma (967 D)

no, it's not that damn MtG card.

my namesign is the sign for "white"

(explanation: instead of always fingerspelling your name out, you usualy repurpose a sign as to function as your name instead. I guess you could compare them to nicknames, though that is not really an accurate explanation)

so when I started thinking of forum names along the sides of "white", I found names like "Blanca" were not exactly fitting. so after some searching, I picked up Akroma, which translates to something like "colorless" or "without color"

except that every 3rd nerd asks me wether I play MtG, the name has served me well

hellalt (40 D)

Akroma, I think you are referring to the Greek word "άχρωμα", pronounced 'a-xro-ma and meaning colorless.
Akroma (967 D)
15 Oct 09 UTC
well, how it is pronounced, I don't know

what I know that it is built from the word "chromatic" which refers to color, and the part "a", that means "not", like in "asocial"

the ending "a" just makes it look more like a female name
hellalt (40 D)
15 Oct 09 UTC
chromatic comes from χρώμα (pronounced chrό-ma).
the ending α in άχρωμα is used to indicate an adverb
