Was it probably not him. Of course. But hey, it's fun to think that it was him.

so the question is, of course, was this person actually Robert James Fischer the 3rd, or a computer imitator taking a thrill in fooling the innocents... oooo...

That's a good story, (To quote Tolkien, "You may be making it all up, but you deserve a supper for the story all the same.") and would be worthy of whatever the Classical Greeks would heap upon such an eloquent entertainment.

I knew a chess club comrade once who played Fischer at Davis College. He made a terrible move. Fischer gave him a quizzical look of scorn, and when our chess-friend stood up and yelled, "CHECK!!!" as loud as he could, he was promptly escorted from the game room.

He's very proud of it, even if it is a patzer tactic.

You probably ran into Fischer. Possibly, maybe, you and Short lost to the next generation of computer programs, and some geeky 14 year-old was having a laugh at him. There would be no better way of testing a program without letting the world know about it than on ICC. Fischer's dead, and that Geeky kid may take 15 years to get his program out, but I've never seen a program disarm a GM in such short time controls and make so many stupid moves to start. But you never know, I guess.

Thanks for the article. I'll send it to a friend of mine... and you're right, it looks like I'm playing a pawn down.

You know, it's odd (about meeting Fischer on ICC and getting waxed) has happened before. I can't send you the quote, but I read somewhere that Kiezeritsky (sp) played 20 quick games with Fischer to the same result as Short. He, a grandmaster, said he never got out of the opening, really, and come the middle game was already lost.

"Gentlemen, we have a limited number of threads visible on this forum. Clearly a chess-game should not qualify as a valid reasons to keep anything else Diplomacy-related off the board. Even religious discussions are more reasonable (cannot believe I'm saying this) as they include much more people :)"
--Ivo_ivanov

He's got a valid point. Save it for chess websites, or do it via e-mail. This thread is almost as ridiculous as my "Liberals" thread.

maintgallant (100 D)
16 Feb 09 UTC
Okay... I may agree with you, diplomat... ;-) but answer me one question: How are religious discussions more valid? I guess my counter-response would be that this IS a community game, and anyone who wants to jump in may at any time either kibitz or make move suggestions, or even make the moves themselves. WE ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE!!! That said, you have point.

So...

Diplomat1824:

1) Given your previous activity in this forum, I'm not inclined to give much weight to your opinion on what is or is not an acceptable thread.

2) If this thread were beyond the acceptable bounds, I think we would have been told so by a mod by now.

Lol this is such a funny image I'm getting.
A couple old guys sitting around moving chess pieces, occasionally some young whippersnapper walks in and says "hurry up no one wants you playing chess in here!"

And the old guys just sort of say, "yeah I guess I see what you mean" while continuing to move the pieces.

Probably smoking cigars too for good measure

Can I get you some coffee Thucydides? We've got some coffee-cake here to, if you want some. Sit a spell, have a chat, watch the cats hunt snakes on the porch.

DipperDon... You don't NEED king safety! I'd like an exchange, though, if you don't mind.

Convoy Rules
If a fleet is convoying an army and is attacked, does the convoy fail? Assume that the attack is by only one naval unit, so it does not win the territory.

Issue with convoy?
The army at London move to Holland via convoy via convoy.
The fleet at North Sea convoy from London to Holland.
Why does it say via convoy TWICE?
Will that affect the result?

Question
Is there any way to resign a game? I joined a game not knowing it would be played under rules I wasn't familiar with. The first set of moves is not yet due, if that makes any difference. The game in question is: http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8823

A couple of noob questions
Is there any sort of move simulator so I can see how various orders would resolve?

For the specific instance I'm thinking of, if there are fleets in Denmark and Kiel, which (if either) are considered adjacent to Berlin? I think Kiel is but Denmark isn't, but I'm not sure.
