I blame Abraham Lincoln
He screwed over the south's economy without granting them an alternative, devastated their homeland and subjugated them to the union. There's no coincidence that these people's descendants elected Trump today. They have been disenfranchised and alienated and economically subjugate since before 1860. We are paying for the sins of our fathers.

The union should've bought the slaves' freedom the same way Britain did.

Clinton - never convicted or took a plea deal despite investigations going back to Whitewater. Multiple FBI and congressional investigations were unable to file charges. Current reopened investigation still hasn't revealed any proof of new emails.

Trump - took plea deal to avoid trial and guilty over housing discrimination.

Trump going to trial for fraud at Trump U. Trump going to trial for child molestation. Trump under investigation for Russian intervention in election.

Maybe I can post the relevant part however:

"VOTE:

To those not planning on voting for Donald Trump:

*If you’re planning on voting for Hillary Clinton: please be sure to get out and vote, by early voting if available in your state or on Election day. This is extremely important, with the election likely decided by who cares enough to turn out and vote.

*If you’re planning on not voting: please rethink this. One can in many elections make a reasonable case that the differences between the candidates aren’t great, so, why bother? If there ever were a US election where that was not true, this is it.

*If you’re planning on voting for a third-party candidate: again, that might make sense if the differences between the two viable candidates were not great, but that is absolutely not the case here. More specifically, if you’re a progressive planning on voting for Jill Stein, please look at what happened in 2000. People who did the same thing in Florida (voting for Nader then) gave us George W. Bush as president, which was a disaster for the progressive cause. I also urge you to look deep within your heart and ask yourself whether your behavior is a realistic engagement with the world, or self-involved moral posturing.

To those planning on voting for Donald Trump:

Please don’t. I see two main arguments for doing this and I think they’re both misguided.

*You agree with Trump more than Clinton on important policy issues. Whatever policy issue you have in mind, I think if you look into it you’ll find that whatever Trump says now, at some other point he was saying something different. There’s little evidence Trump has fixed views on any policy issue (other than the desirability of better tax treatment for real estate development projects). If you think Trump will, for instance, appoint Supreme Court justices that share your moral values, note that he has reportedly told Peter Thiel that he would like to appoint him to the Court. Thiel is a gay, radical libertarian Silicon Valley billionaire from San Francisco with highly eccentric views. I doubt you share his moral values (since virtually no one else does, right, left or center).

*You’re angry at well-off coastal elites who you feel look down on you and your culture, and you want to spit in their face by voting for Trump. If so, you are quite right to feel the way you do. From a lifetime spent among such elites I can tell you that, yes, they do look down on you. Most people here in New York City probably do think you’re an ignorant racist. Your problem though is that Donald Trump is one of us. He’s a well-off New Yorker through and through, looks down on you every bit as much as others. If elected he will govern in the interest of his tribe, not yours. If you think otherwise, you’ve been conned. All you will accomplish by a vote for Trump is to convince people in New York, Washington D.C. and California that you really are even more ignorant than they thought, a racist fool taken in by an obvious con.

It's true. She is terrible. I had a much easier time on other elections, looking up candidates and bubbling in the spot by their name. The last one I did was the presidential race. @leon let me say again, I don't follow him for anything related to politics, I follow the blog a long while ago, and it's the first post entirely devoted to politics. I wanted to share that post precisely because of that. And then I came here and see that perterlund had basically the same call (vote hillary), but I thought that Peter Woit has founded much better his reasons.

Maybe indoctrination, but I don't give a shit about that, christians also indoctrinate but they do with bad arguments. Why don't you discuss the arguments, do you have anything relevant to say once, leon?
TrPrado (461 D)

I can hope. I can even try. But candidates will obviously ALWAYS exaggerate themselves as to what they can and will achieve, and how they can improve things. Or stuff like that. There can be hope. Eventually. Not now.
principians (881 D)
02 Nov 16 UTC
@TrPrado, that's just not true, I can't give you american examples, but here I can think of at least one candidate that DIDN't exaggerate himself, all the opposite, always stressed the point that other candidates would do that, and exposed them so well, that he won (it was a local position, but he won)

The statement above was literally one of the worst arguments I have ever read.

To those planning on voting for Clinton:

Please don't.

1. Please consider voting for a third party candidate like Gary Johnson or Jill Stein who represent liberal social policies that may be more in line with what you believe in.
2. A strong third party showing will help increase the odds of a third party getting federal funding in 2020 which helps the democratic system.
3. A vote for Clinton is basically a stamp of approval or consent of criminal and corrupt practices. Hillary Clinton is under an active FBI investigation and her foundation has five separate FBI criminal probes ongoing. Several of her staffers are under active FBI investigation as well.
4. Hillary Clinton and her allies in the Media and DNC rigged the democratic primary so Bernie Sanders wouldn't win. Bernie fought an honorable campaign, but DNC chairwoman Debbie and Donna Brazile rigged the election. This has been shown through wikileaks. CNN dropped Donna Brazile today from their programming because of what she did. It has all been revealed through wikileaks. Again, if you care about the democratic system don't reward corrupt behavior with a vote for Clinton.
4. Hillary Clinton has been involved in pay to play schemes while she was Secretary of State and prior during the 1990s Bill Clinton Presidency with instances such as filegate. Please look it up if you haven't already.
5. Hillary Clinton has had the opportunity to make progressive changes for the past thirty years but has simply enriched herself at our expense and added to government corruption.

Closing argument: Please consider a third party vote because you are only rewarding criminality and corruption with a vote for Clinton.

If you plan to vote for Donald Trump:

Please do.

1. Donald Trump is an outside, change agent, who will shake up the system. His entire platform and time spent as a political candidate shows that he wants to end government corruption, rigging, and corrupt practices. This all starts with defeating the most corrupt and crooked candidate in U.S. history, Hillary Clinton.
2. Donald Trump wants to rebuild America's military which has been seriously weakened by Obama over the past 8 years. He wants to restore American prestige around the world. He wants to fight ISIS by strategically working with the Russians instead of entering into a war with them like Hillary Clinton. A vote for Clinton, after all, is a vote for WWIII against Russia.
3. Donald Trump wants NATO to pay it's fair share in providing common defense. Right now, the U.S. pays the majority for the upkeep of NATO. Under Donald Trump all of our allies will pay more which will provide a greater defense for all. It will also make sure the alliance is fair and balanced and that we, a debtor nation, will not get ripped off anymore.
4. Donald Trump wants to rebuild America's inner cities like Detroit which has suffered at the hands of Democratic leadership for the past 100 years. He wants to improve the quality of life for all Americans no matter what your race, religion, or creed is.
5. Donald Trump wants to safeguard legal immigration to the United States, but wants to end illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is a strain on our nation's resources. A wall, tougher border security, and more deportations will help to ease this strain by removing people that are not supposed to be here. This will combat drug violence, crime, and drug cartels which are flowing across our southern border.
6. Donald Trump wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with an affordable alternative. Obamacare premiums are going up at least 25% depending on where you live and in some cases it could be as high as 100% more in medical costs.
7. Donald Trump wants to renegotiate trade agreements like NAFTA which has led to the loss of 7,000 factories in the United States since it was initially signed. This will lead to more jobs, job security, and prosperity in the United States.

Closing arguments: Donald Trump wants to improve the quality of life for all Americans by making this country rich again, renegotiating trade deals, and bringing jobs back to America. Donald Trump wants to work with the Russians and end ISIS once and for all which will restore safety to America. Donald Trump wants to protect our borders, fight crime, end drug smuggling, and usher in a new golden age for America.

The choice is simple: constitutional crisis, decline, corruption, and decay under Clinton or a new age of peace and prosperity under Trump.

Um, no. Not at all. Legal immigration has been a staple of the campaign. I don't know where you are getting this information from. He said some immigrants were rapists, but most were good people. Again, false narrative/propaganda. He made a lewd comment, common locker room talk, no where near the level of pay for play and criminal behavior. False narrative/propaganda.

Clinton:
"1. Please consider voting for a third party candidate like Gary Johnson or Jill Stein who represent liberal social policies that may be more in line with what you believe in."
I did consider voting third party. Jill Stein wasn't on the Oklahoma ballot, but I wouldn't have voted for her anyway. She's WAY too far left. Part of what took me so long on the presidential election was whether to vote for Johnson or Clinton after I'd already ruled out Trump. Sadly, Johnson is far less competent than one could hope.
"2. A strong third party showing will help increase the odds of a third party getting federal funding in 2020 which helps the democratic system."
I can work on this from ground-up through smaller elections first. The system is in desperate need of a stronger centrist voice to shake up the polarized system.
"3. A vote for Clinton is basically a stamp of approval or consent of criminal and corrupt practices. Hillary Clinton is under an active FBI investigation and her foundation has five separate FBI criminal probes ongoing. Several of her staffers are under active FBI investigation as well. "
Get her impeached then.
"4. Again, if you care about the democratic system don't reward corrupt behavior with a vote for Clinton."
It's THEIR party. I don't care anymore. I'm not registered to that party anyway.
"4. Hillary Clinton has been involved in pay to play schemes while she was Secretary of State and prior during the 1990s Bill Clinton Presidency with instances such as filegate. Please look it up if you haven't already. "
I've criticized her for these things. I was raised in a household of these criticisms of the Clintons.
"5. Hillary Clinton has had the opportunity to make progressive changes for the past thirty years but has simply enriched herself at our expense and added to government corruption. "
I don't care as much as other people do.

Trump:
Change is not always good. Direct experience is good. Status quo can be quite fine.
Would you rather the fool or the cunning imp have the reigns? An imp is an imp, but it also has cunning, and that cunning is the note which distinguishes it as better. The fool thinks Iran has a winning stage set to take Iraq. If we are subject to war, the fool will look upon it and not know how to respond. He paid for soldiers, but that was not enough. The cunning imp will smile and respond happily and properly.
Fair.
"5. Donald Trump wants to safeguard legal immigration to the United States, but wants to end illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is a strain on our nation's resources. A wall, tougher border security, and more deportations will help to ease this strain by removing people that are not supposed to be here. This will combat drug violence, crime, and drug cartels which are flowing across our southern border."
Sigh. Better security is a fine goal. A wall is not a feasible response.
"4. Donald Trump wants to rebuild America's inner cities like Detroit which has suffered at the hands of Democratic leadership for the past 100 years. He wants to improve the quality of life for all Americans no matter what your race, religion, or creed is. "
So he wants to impede on local and state governments' control over their own property? That sounds like a step backwards for someone who wants a federal hiring freeze.
"6. Donald Trump wants to repeal Obamacare and replace it with an affordable alternative. Obamacare premiums are going up at least 25% depending on where you live and in some cases it could be as high as 100% more in medical costs. "
I doubt healthcare will be improved significantly regardless of who's president.
"7. Donald Trump wants to renegotiate trade agreements like NAFTA which has led to the loss of 7,000 factories in the United States since it was initially signed. This will lead to more jobs, job security, and prosperity in the United States."
If Mexico and Canada agree to renegotiate, they'll demand a better deal for themselves. NAFTA significantly harmed Mexican farm labor at the benefit of American companies.
