Bug check?
Well, I'm not sure what happened (although I'm guessing some save error so it wont' show up in any logs) but I somehow ended up with an army in Naples rather than the fleet that I thought I'd ordered.

The Golden Age of Diplomacy
Does anyone else find reading Sharp's "The Game of Diplomacy" really depressing? The level of dedication and analysis that he presents in the book would never be found today. Does anyone even talk about diplomacy theory anymore, or are we just left to reading relics of the past?

Homework this week
Your homework this week is to speak to an octogenarian. We won't have them for very much longer and so I think it's important for young people to meet these guys.

Hippies aren't quite the same. They're uptight in a way that the people older than them weren't.

Feature Idea
So, I play a lot of live games, and I make a lot of them. I would love an option that would let players make games where any NMR in the first year is an instant cancel. So, that way there's no situation where a Germany NMR's and England/France/Russia take advantage and go on to become monster powers.

"MURDER WEAPONS EVERYWHERE"

^Confused by the fact that death by gunshot does not have to be murder...
hecks (164 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
@Draug,
What if we call them HOMICIDE WEAPONS? Does that make it better? After all, self-defense is legally referred to as "Justifiable homicide." Also, homicide encompasses manslaughter, too.

Is it just me, or does manslaughter sound way, way more serious than murder?
Someone earlier said that guns' only purpose is to injure, which justifies their being banned (and not knives et al). Does this not extend to mace, pepper spray, or taser guns?
krellin (80 DX)
14 Jan 14 UTC
I'd actually venture the guess that the earliest knives where devised as weapons...therefore, we should ban knives because obviously they are deadly when used wrong,
krellin (80 DX)
14 Jan 14 UTC
And it’s reasonable to say their original intent was to provide the wielder with deadly force.

So kkkrellin, you stupid cocksucker, you refuse to admit that most americans LOVE guns. Not knives, or pepper spray, or tasers, or any other weapon apart from guns. You deny the existence of a GUN CULTURE, which dictates that you brain-dead american bone-smokers EQUATE GUNS WITH FREEDOM.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))

A knife's purpose is mainly to apply deadly force? A knife's purpose is to cut things. There are tons of ways to utilize that ability granted by a knife without exerting any deadly force on any person or animal, and the majority of times a knife is used, it's not killing anything. Just like there are tons of ways to use a car that doesn't involve running someone over. There would be blatant losses to our ability to do certain non-dangerous things without knives or cars. Please explain what society loses if we were to discard our guns. The ability to defend from an oppressive government using its own firepower I guess is one answer, but I'd be more impressed with an answer that wasn't filled with paranoia.
mapleleaf (0 DX)

Oh I'll take that question.

The dummies wouldn't be AS FREE if they ALL were not permitted to carry guns because...errrrrrrr because.....errrrrrrr JUST BECAUSE ALL RIGHT?
"The ability to defend from an oppressive government using its own firepower I guess is one answer, but I'd be more impressed with an answer that wasn't filled with paranoia."

that's not paranoid

it is however a pointless reason

why do people need to justify owning something in a free society?

We're not free to own crack. We're not free to own enriched uranium. We're not free to own slaves. Etc etc. Do you feel less free as a result? There are non lethal tools that work as well to attain the goal of self-defense almost as well, or maybe even better than guns in some cases, no? Is a gun really the only thing that will make you feel safe, and simultaneously make everyone more vulnerable to freak gun shootings?
Draugnar (0 DX)

"Please explain what society loses if we were to discard our guns. "

Hunting (not that that is a big loss in my book). Shooting Christmas trees down from the tops of taller pines and other evergreens (like that redneck homophobe on that TV show).
"We're not free to own crack. We're not free to own enriched uranium. We're not free to own slaves. Etc etc. Do you feel less free as a result?"

I don't see why we shouldn't be allowed to own the first two. And no society that allows slavery is a free society, so that's really outside the question...

"Does this not extend to mace, pepper spray, or taser guns?"

Those are non-lethal. Call me when we have 30,000 taser or mace deaths per year.

Why can't the gun fetishists just admit that they have total contempt for public safety. There is no principle here.
Draugnar (0 DX)

"There are non lethal tools that work as well to attain the goal of self-defense almost as well, or maybe even better than guns in some cases, no?"

No, there aren't. "Stupid spick brought a knife to a gun fight" ring a bell? No amount of self defense or knives or other weapons you can carry whose range is limited to a few feet beyond your body (i.e. non-guns) will work as well as a gun for stopping someone intent on causing you harm, especially as banning guns means the criminals will still have them but the citizens trying to protect themselves won't.

Communist.

" especially as banning guns means the criminals will still have them but the citizens trying to protect themselves won't."

Which is why criminals get most of their guns legally.

The gun lobby really has mind boggingly stupid arguments.

Already have, multiple times. We've proved time and time again the gun lobby doesn't give a fig for the actual evidence.

"The fundamental right to self-defense and defense of one's family."

Which is only necessary because guns are legal and widespread.

A circular argument if there ever was one.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Put up or shut the fuck up in this thread. I want one non-partisan honest report that shows criminals buy their guns legally versus stealing them or getting them on the black market.

And then I want one clear and non-partisan report that proves taking away the legal guns proves they won't switch to illegal means of obtaining them. The genie is out of the bottle and you can't put it back.

There has been many instances where people have saved others from a armed theif with guns. They did not even necessarily fire the weapon. Guns are tools. It all depends on who owns the gun that makes it dangerous or not. Where I live everyone owns a gun and the crime rate is very low. Why? Because the bad guys are scared they will get there head shot off if they try anything. They have no idea who has one and who does not. Because you hear of some stories where people kill others with a gun You judge every gun owner off of a few who did wrong as if we were all a hazard. Think again! Most of us gun owners are good law abiding citizens and I don't think it is fair to judge us all because of the actions of a few. You don't need a gun to kill someone. There are many, many weapons to choose from and guns play but a small part in the percentage of murders committed. Now I want you to ask yourself a question. Would you be dangerous if you had a gun? Most likly you would not be.
Putin33 (111 D)
14 Jan 14 UTC
"Most of us gun owners are good law abiding citizens and I don't think it is fair to judge us all because of the actions of a few. "

No you aren't. You gun owners aid and abet criminals with straw purchases and gun trafficking. You are the problem.

"There are many, many weapons to choose from and guns play but a small part in the percentage of murders committed"

False. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-8

Like I said you people don't care about facts.

" Would you be dangerous if you had a gun? Most likly you would not be."

Most people who own guns don't know how to use them. Tens of thousands of accidents per year from stupidity with guns.
Tangent time!

Putin, do you draw entertainment from the political posts you make and the responses they gather? After years of trying to figure out what your angle is I'm still not sure. It's clearly not to persuade. What is it?

How to deal with people taking advantage of CD
Well, yet again, we have a situation where a country solos because its neighbors go CD from the outset, everyone else is completely sporting about declaring a draw.

Perhaps some kind of ban on new games for a couple weeks or something for this kind of cheating?

The Foundation Series
I (at the suggestion of a forum member, who's name I forget but will hopefully identify themselves), just read the first three books in the foundation series by Isaac Asimov. After calibrating my block list by reading through a recent gun control debate thread, I'd like to ask forum dwellers for their take on this series, or at least the premise.
