Look out every one, Invictus' inner lefty is coming out.
If we're going to have a minimum wage (and there are pretty good arguments we shouldn't), the it should be tied to inflation. I read an article a few days ago that if that were the case from 1968 on the minimum wage would be around $15. Not living large by any means, but something one could live on.
Of course, that's still not enough to raise a family. Or to save for retirement. But minimum wage jobs aren't for those people, you say. They're for young kids, etc. Maybe that was true at some point, but unless and until we get the economy growing again at the pace that wages can rise (so, late January 2017 at the earliest), that's not the case.
Of course, we could always abolish the minimum wage and let loose the market generally with rampant deregulation. I'd be much happier with that. But, seeing as we won't get 70 Rand Paul clones in the Senate and 300 in the House anytime soon, we've got to deal with the administrative state as it exists. Tying the minimum wage even has solid right-wing credentials, since it would mean many of those workers could get off of public assistance now that they're making more. In effect, we subsidize businesses by keeping the minimum wage so low and having various aid programs to make up some of the difference in people's needs.
