Declining a Build
Is it possible to decline a build? It should be legal, but I don't see a way to do it in the interface.

From the fourth edition of the rules: "A country can decline to build a unit that it is entitled to for any reason."

Here's what we (meme, Vash, and I) said about it during M19:

The GMs will not be enforcing a post requirement. However, excessive lurking may be considered not playing to win, and therefore may be subject to replacement, removal, and/or bans from future games of Mafia.

Expanded:
3. Players are expected to contribute actively to the game. No artificial post requirement will be set. However, if a player’s excessive lurking is seen to go against their win condition, it may result in a replacement from the game. Mafia comes with a well-known time commitment. Do not sign up for the game if you cannot commit to it.

A "lynch the lurkers" policy is very difficult to get agreement on during the game. I am pleasantly surprised we actually did it to Guak this time.
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
@ Chaqa: I like that rule, IF the GMs are willing to actually enforce it.

Tell me, in the game that just ended, if you were the GM, would you have taken action against Guak for excessive lurking?
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
So as far as I'm informed...

Mafia XXIII: ND and Chaqa
Mafia XXIV: DemonRHK and ? ?
Mafia XXV: Maniac and VashtanErotic

Is anyone down for XXVI ?

If not I would like to get my name down. I enjoyed GMing before.
Maniac (189 D(B))

The problem with the above rule "However, if a player’s excessive lurking is seen to go against their win condition, it may result in a replacement from the game." is that if someone is replaced for lurking they must be town. GMs shouldn't be giving clears like that and NOT replacing someone means they are likely scum.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
22 Aug 16 UTC
I can't say for sure as I didn't read the game following my death until it was down to just the three or four of you these past few days.
teacon7 (306 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
^ or PR. I could see a slight degree of lurking being consistent with PR strategy. But otherwise, the replacement (or non-replacement) seems like a mechanic that would soft-clear a player.

I bet the next vanilla game sees a few policy lynches.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
22 Aug 16 UTC
@Maniac: we addressed that early on in M19. If a VT is lurking to potentially draw a nightkill or live longer, he is playing to his win condition. Basically, lurking purposefully is OK, but just lurking because you're not paying attention isn't. Note the final sentence: "Mafia comes with a well-known time commitment. Do not sign up for the game if you cannot commit to it."
Zybodia (355 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
Then what do you do if somebody is claiming to be unable to follow the time commitment, but in actuality is just hiding? How do you tell the difference?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
22 Aug 16 UTC
Well if they told the GM they couldn't make the time commitment then they would be replaced. If they told the thread that, but yet were still in the game, then the players would realize that they are lying and therefore it's a bit of WIFOM.

We honestly don't have too big of a lurker problem generally. Guak always lurks, but most of the rest of us lurker types come out of hiding a day or two into the game.

Lol, Zybodia, you don't. You can't, unless you pull a Maniac and get a photographed alibi proving exactly why someone is busy. Chaqa is suggesting that lurkers be dealt with by the GMs if they are town and by the town if they are mafia. That's even worse than doing nothing. If someone is busy, don't let them play. If the Committee of God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit objects, fuck em.
Brankl (231 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
Bo you mentioned how hard it is for the GMs to make sure everyone posts 5+ times. Technology can change that. I used import.io to make a spreadsheet with everyone's posts. From there, it's really easy to see who has posted and Iwhat page their posts come from.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

"Chaqa is suggesting that lurkers be dealt with by the GMs if they are town and by the town if they are mafia."

22 Aug 16 UTC
@ Chaqa: "I can't say for sure as I didn't read the game following my death until it was down to just the three or four of you these past few days."

Well, in the days you missed, Guak made exactly two posts each day phase, and barely posted during the nights. In those posts he largely tunnelled on me and said he hadn't been reading the thread.

Modkill? Yes or no?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
22 Aug 16 UTC
At the very least I'd reach out to him and find out why he was playing as such.

We haven't decided posting requirements from M23 yet. It will be in the signup thread though when that happens.
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
I'm interested by Chaqa's comment that you need a lot of players.

Is it a role-heavy or more-than-two-teams set up?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
22 Aug 16 UTC
Our current setup has two mafia teams. We would like to have 20 or so players, but we can scale things if we get less.

Town vs Mafia vs More Mafia?
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
22 Aug 16 UTC
Town, Mafia team 1, Mafia team A

All competing. A bit like when we had town, mafia, and cultists, except it's two teams of mafia.
Jamiet99uk (898 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
If you get 20 players, how many on each team?

12 town vs 4 mafia vs 4 mafia?

I think Chaqa said it'd be 14 v. 3 v. 3
teacon7 (306 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
Reminds me of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Families_(The_Godfather)

That sounds intense. The more vanilla the roles are, the more intense it'll get. I think town loses hard in the beginning, but makes a comeback when the maf teams have to start fighting each other. It's gonna be hilarious watching (even in hindsight) the two scumteams try to find each other without giving their own team away. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to being town this time.

ND (879 D)
22 Aug 16 UTC
It is a multi-mafia setup. I can confirm that.

Shared rights for a pc-game
Hey guys,
I'm creating a pc-game with a small group of people and we're wondering whether the rights can be shared.
We wonder whether all creators can be owners for a percentage of the product rather than just having one nominal owner who hands out the money to the other creators without having to create a joint company for just the one product. Does anyone know if that is possible, how and where the limitations are?

Newbie here
Hi! I'm new to the game and the site. What are points? Chess has a rating system, but I'm curious to how the Points system works out in Diplomacy.

Since I'm new and am likely to get backstabbed pretty frequently in the first few games, how fast can I hit zero and what happens if I exceed my expectations and actually get there? :-)
