Caricatures - Public Press game
This was one that we did a while back and I thought it was fun. A public press game where everyone assumes a stereotypical accent.

ie Austria-Hungary types like John Cleese in the phrase book skit "EYE vill nut boiy dis record, it is skretched".

Apples and oranges
I've seen a number of discussions on the forums recently comparing two positions or ideas that are too different to reach a valid conclusion about which is better. Since invalid comparisons are in vogue right now, I thought we might discuss the classic: apples vs oranges. Go!

SD is a very very good GB player. Now, I know him somewhat (I would not say good) and he can be a bit 'harsh' at times, trust me. However, he is blunt, to the point, and leaves nothing to the imagination when he tells you what he thinks...lol

I can not imagine he is a good FP player though, as his strength is in his tactics/strategy.

Maybe he can be a good FP player, but we will never know...hahahahah

This is why I love the fact that GR is separated by category now. It clears up some of the debate (though not regarding points) You can judge how well you play against people who play the same game type. Basically it allows all the people who think gunboat is stupid, to filter those people out of the GR and look at the non-live full press rating.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
13 Jun 12 UTC
Actually, Zmaj, I've done nothing but compliment SD's ability as a (gunboat) player, maintaining only that he is a flaming douche as a person.

@Lando, your point about YJ was valid months ago, but he's stepped up his level of competition, and I can personally attest to the fact that he's an excellent player.

@YJ, gunboat is a different game, but that doesn't make being good at it any less notable, it's just a different skill set.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

@Zmaj, please take the time to read before you post. I did not belittle him as a player. What I did do however was point out that the points system is not an accurate determination of a players skill. That looking at a persons ghostrating, their win/draw percentage, and the number of resigned games they have is a much better indicator of how well they play. What I also did was point out that it's pathetic that one of the top ranked players on the site is arrogant enough to think he can ignore the forum rules. At no point did I say that SplitDiplomat is a bad player. So I apologize for being too subtle while making the same point you did "SplitDiplomat is an asshole as a person".

On a side note, if you'll notice in my post I refrained from calling anyone an "asshole" or any other obscene term...unlike you.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
14 Jun 12 UTC
@Lando DAAAMN I missed that last post.

I will cede the point regarding the nuances of gunboat - I am not familiar with due to my lack of experience with it. Perhaps I should try a few more gunboats and then comment. I apologize for speaking without thinking about a topic that is clearly important to you. I've only been playing diplomacy for a year now, and curse myself for not discovering it earlier. I fell in love with the game immediately because the two angles of approach (tactics and diplomacy) both play to my natural strengths. If I'm disdainful of gunboat, it's because I feel that I can accomplish a great deal more and have more fun with the gift of the gab than I can through considering permutations alone.

That being said, I question what metric you are using when you say it's "exceptionally harder." I feel you show your bias when you say "tactics is at the heart of both games." Tactics, in my opinion, is only a minority of a press game. It's important, but good press will get you further and pave your road much more easily. I'd put it at 70/30 diplomacy/tactics in a press game, off the top of my head. I think SplitDiplomat's play in press games is a case in point that it's merely a different skill set. In my opinion, the skills required to excel at gunboat would more be easily obtained and refined than the skills necessary to excel in a press game, but I freely admit I'm not qualified to say so definitively.

I think you missed my point entirely re: curling. Your seem to think I'm attacking the sport and I don't think you have much justification in that. All I said was that I'm not interested and don't think that you can use the same rating system for curlers and ice hockey players to obtain a single number (GR, if you will) for who is "best on the ice."

Yes, I have brought some of my RL friends to the community and I do enjoy playing with them. I played PPSC to start because it was the default and I was new. When I felt I was ready and found what I consider flaws in the variant, I switched to WTA. You can say whatever you want about the quality of my play - I've been as good as I needed to improve my rating in every game but one.

You're flat out wrong though regarding my forum posts. People love my shit and I know for a fact that at least 1/3 of the webdip community follows my pearls of hilarity, wisdom, and insight with great anticipation.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
14 Jun 12 UTC
Yeah, as a mod I get all kinds of stats about the site, and at least 1/3 of the webdip community does follow YJ's shit, and teams that score higher than their opponents win 98.9% of the time.

I also take exception to the "exceptionally harder." Gunboat is different. It's not harder. In fact, if you consider from a cognitive point of view, non-live full press games are much "harder" than gunboat games because while you can play dozens of gunboat games at the same time without affecting your quality of play significantly, it is not at all true for non-live full press games. I don't know of many high quality full press players who regularly play more than a few to at most several at at time.
And before any of you wta full press divas, just mainly MM because I don't really care about any random dude not in the top 100 GR -and yeah, I'm an elitist; deal with it, refer to my earlier today about gunboat being better than full press.

Having just finished a game with YJ, I can tell you from personal experience that he's a pretty damn good player. I will organize another game in a week or so, and I would welcome you, Lando, to play with him. I will not be participating in the game, just organizing it.

Points are fun. They are a neat party trick. I've enjoyed having the most and am saddened at the prospect of that changing...

It's been said before, and it'll be said again, there's a reason this game is called Diplomacy and not Tactics or Strategy. My success on this site is perhaps the best indicator that tactics and strategy will much more often than not bow down to diplomatic prowess, which is not meant to emphasize my diplomatic prowess, but rather my lack of skill when it comes to tactics and strategy, and thus the fact that my lack in tactics and strategy clearly suggests I must be banking on the third and thus most prominent factor of success...

@zultar, there have been times when I've played 6-8 full press games at a time. I know that's not normal, but it's definitely doable.
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
14 Jun 12 UTC
I remember playing 13 full press games concurrently, but that was way too much... Starting 7 full press games within a day or two of each other for last fall's ABI was way too much as well... At the moment I'm a bit burnt out and have other stuff going on in real life, so the two games I'm in are way too much... No wonder SplitDiplomat is about to give me the boot, damnit, I got to get my priorities in life straightened back out, who's up for a high pot game?! ;-)

You guys should have a 100k pot med game.
you people are fucking crazy.

let me solve this for you very, very simply. let's just all look at the live games rankings, and only those, for our metric. no one has suggested it, so no one has opposed it, therefore it is the best.
ghug (5068 D(B))
14 Jun 12 UTC
Everyone knows that the needed metric is French win/draw ratio in full press games. All diplomacy is imbalanced, classic, full press the least so, but ratings have to be limited to a single country to account for that imbalance.
no

live games is the best and only valid metric. end of story.

now, back to the fields, serfs!

For debate: When is a gunboat not really a gunboat?
Hey gang: I accidentally clicked onto a gunboat game and now have no real way of backing out. Others are not really being acquiescent about a Cancel, so it looks like I'm (more or less) stuck. So instead, I'm setting up this thread as a potential discussion spot for gameID=91706. If players are talking here, is it still gunboat?
