@Lando DAAAMN I missed that last post.
I will cede the point regarding the nuances of gunboat - I am not familiar with due to my lack of experience with it. Perhaps I should try a few more gunboats and then comment. I apologize for speaking without thinking about a topic that is clearly important to you. I've only been playing diplomacy for a year now, and curse myself for not discovering it earlier. I fell in love with the game immediately because the two angles of approach (tactics and diplomacy) both play to my natural strengths. If I'm disdainful of gunboat, it's because I feel that I can accomplish a great deal more and have more fun with the gift of the gab than I can through considering permutations alone.
That being said, I question what metric you are using when you say it's "exceptionally harder." I feel you show your bias when you say "tactics is at the heart of both games." Tactics, in my opinion, is only a minority of a press game. It's important, but good press will get you further and pave your road much more easily. I'd put it at 70/30 diplomacy/tactics in a press game, off the top of my head. I think SplitDiplomat's play in press games is a case in point that it's merely a different skill set. In my opinion, the skills required to excel at gunboat would more be easily obtained and refined than the skills necessary to excel in a press game, but I freely admit I'm not qualified to say so definitively.
I think you missed my point entirely re: curling. Your seem to think I'm attacking the sport and I don't think you have much justification in that. All I said was that I'm not interested and don't think that you can use the same rating system for curlers and ice hockey players to obtain a single number (GR, if you will) for who is "best on the ice."
Yes, I have brought some of my RL friends to the community and I do enjoy playing with them. I played PPSC to start because it was the default and I was new. When I felt I was ready and found what I consider flaws in the variant, I switched to WTA. You can say whatever you want about the quality of my play - I've been as good as I needed to improve my rating in every game but one.
You're flat out wrong though regarding my forum posts. People love my shit and I know for a fact that at least 1/3 of the webdip community follows my pearls of hilarity, wisdom, and insight with great anticipation.
