I have been at WebDip for a few months now, and I think I've got a pretty good idea of the flavor of the site and its regular users. How does it compare to the rest of internet diplomacy?

Daily Bible Reading--John 1
This thread isn't meant to provoke argument, but if it does, that's ok. It's just a place to come for a one-chapter dose of the Bible. Today's reading is the first chapter of John's story of the good news as he personally experienced it, translated into modern English.

@Mujus

I find this series concerning for 2 reasons (you'll note neither has to do with content):

1) You are not posting any content. Perhaps you could actually ask a question, or direct the conversation in some way?

2) There seems to me to be no need to post a new thread every day on essentially the same subject. Perhaps this could either be contained int the same thread or spaced out to a weekly series like obi's defunct Philosophy Weekly.

As a side note, way to go pretty much everyone in this thread (the notable exceptions surprisingly being krellin and NB). Real classy way to handle a thread you don't like that needn't involve you at all.

@ krellin

No harm in the odd religious debate or even the occasion religious post, but this thread is terrifying because of its use of the word 'daily' and the implication that it may be the start of a flood even worse that TC's 'I am considerably wealthier than thou' economics/politics threads. As such it must be crushed like one would a cockroach. Swiftly and without mercy.

While I fully support Mujus' right to post anything he wants here I do think there is a key difference between this and MOST threads, in that there is no particular question or assertion being made. By not being specific Mujus has opened the door to this which I'm sure isn't what he had in mind. What kind of scathing remarks would you have for Putin if instead of actually commenting on anything he just posted random links to quotes from Karl Marx?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

@abge,
Agreed and I'm one step ahead of you regarding the "new thread" every day.
Here's the daily thread for religious thought/message:

To be honest, he does have a subject. It's like a Bible Study in that he has picked a chapter to read and discuss. That said, maybe weekly would be more appropriate than daily as, yes, daily would result in way to many threads especially if the discussion were hotly debated and carried over from day to day. Most threads die within a week, but a lot live longer than a day or two and havign three or four of these clogging up the top of the forum is too much.

I guess what I'm saying is daily would need to be locked at the end of the day to prevent over clogging the forum and that would require mod intervention and be problematic from the "free speech" advocates (of course, there is no right to free speech in a private forum any more than in someone's house). So maybe make it weekly.

@Draug

If you'd believe some on this forum, I can't pass through the threshold of a church, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Don't bible studies usually have some sort of direction or lesson? I very much doubt sunday school consisted of the teacher calling out a chapter to read and then remaining completely silent, as is the case in these threads.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Apr 12 UTC
@abge - Not necessarily. Usually they are "read and discuss" and left open for interpretation. any Bible study which tells you up front what the verse means is an indoctrination, not an honest study.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Apr 12 UTC
And Sunday School is indoctrination into that chruich's belifs, not a Bible Study.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))
23 Apr 12 UTC
And yet I highly doubt that if this were a classroom, the teacher would stand silent as people plaster "FUCK" all over the room and the discussion moves on to Greek gods.

If Mujus wants to start a series, I (personally) think he should take charge of his own thread and address the comments being made.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Apr 12 UTC
@abge - There is where your thinking fails. Not in the "Fuck plastered all over the room" but in the idea that Bible Studies take place in classrooms. I have been to many a study in my years at various churches and most were in private people's houses and were completely open and honest. The idea of a proper Bible study is that God speaks to all of us about different aspects of the same scripture based on how it affects our lives. We discuss these for our unique perspectives looking for the truth that resides within them collectively.

And the really good ones can get heated on ocassion. although rarely with invictives like "fuck" thrown in the mix. after all, they are usually a group of believers.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
23 Apr 12 UTC
The reality is this: Mujus' threads are a complete and utter failure as a bible study. Not a single post in either thread relates to the section in question and the OP does nothing to direct the conversation. I am just trying to suggest a way in which his series will be more successful and not horribly clutter the forum. A win/win for everyone, no?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
23 Apr 12 UTC
I find it amusing that Mujus can't see Draugnar defending his right to post quotes and such because he has muted Draugnar for his use of language, which is probably what prompted him to get all religious on this forum to begin with.

Mujus cannot see the FUCK plastered all over the room. He has me muted. Much to my consternation, because I liked talking to him (before the discriminate mutes; now I cannot talk to him -_-).
Draugnar (0 DX)

I'm with you there, dubmdell. It really is a shame that Mujus had to be a fool and close his eyes and ears (and mind) to what we could offer all because we have a more colorful language.

Krellin, he was being sarcastic. He was complimenting you.

Draug, you know, I cannot recall being "colorful" towards Mujus prior to his muting me. That's what really gets my goat about the discrimination he showed.

I find your screen name/handler offensive, dumbbell.
It's not a particularly cool object to begin with and you misspelled it badly. You out-Draugnar Draugnar with his autocorrect typo nonsense.
If I had any sense of decency, I would mute you. I applaud Mujus for muting you. Discrimination is the least he should do. I think he should create a thread about inane objects and misspell the hell out of them. For example, youranus --> uranus.

Did something change with how muting works?
Used to be, you could briefly see (and hit ESC to fully read) muted posts/people. Now, I can hit ESC before the javascript executes, but I still don't see posts form people I muted. Did the code shift to muting server side? If so, cool, but also "bummer" as I'll have to unmute people to see their bullshit (and them me if they have me muted).

Please stop being hypocritical
We ask Mujus to create a single thread for his quotes and he has done that. Please be considerate and do the same. If he wants to discuss the bible every day and there are people who want to do the same, please let them. Stop making a mockery out of their freedom of speech.

Is there a bug in this game? the A1901 opening F MAO - SPAIN - SC with A SPAIN - POR has failed to work in 2 successive games.

Daily Secular Reading
Well, last time we did a poem by a tragic, mad, male genius, Mr. Poe...how about a tragic, mad, female genius, Emily Dickinson? (We'll do someone from the British Isles tomorrow, so don't worry, this thread isn't going to be a sad example of American Exceptionalism and shut out the rest of the English-speaking world.) So! A very short poem by Dickinson (and how prudent this one is, given these "Daily Bible Readings") and more talk of her inside...
