What opposing power do you most want to see in able hands?
Which country in Classic that you are not playing do you most hope is in the hands of someone with a reasonably good sense of the overall map dynamics, unit abilities and the way various provinces and powers relate to one another?

A pity it turned out as it did.

It was poised interestingly, although I suspect it was mostly "Let's kill the non-voting people". The I/R/T scramble was fun. Given Germany's latest push into Venice, I feel Russia would have come out on top of Turkey unless Germany built armies and sent them east (unlikely)

Some breaking news yesterday from CERN that subatomic particles seem to have beaten the speed of light. Very exciting and, although CERN wants the results checked again before publishing, such an extraordinary claim that I thought I'd bring it to attention here on the forum.

Then add yourself to the list, JP.

This tournament won't be starting for about a month, and will take multiple months to complete. Keep that in mind when signing up.

Right now, entrants will be chosen by Ghost's Peak Rankings:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en_US&hl=en_US&key=0AseR-H0M2Ru3dHl0M3VPMUIxTGxic1N6X2RCeFVxb2c&output=html

Info on the tourney can be found here:

http://tournaments.webdiplomacy.net/gunboat-tournament

^ That's not all set in stone. I may tinker with some things before the end of the August.

O.o

Ghost rating is hardly a fair way to judge entrants :P

I'm sure Sargmacher feels otherwise, but frankly that is based more on normal games yeah? I would argue that my ghost rating per gunboat games would be higher than theirs.
acmac10 (120 D(B))
15 Aug 11 UTC
You are right in that GR isn't a good reflection of gunboat games, but it is a system designed in that it promotes desirable play, which is all what you can ask for in a tournament.
taylornottyler (100 D)
15 Aug 11 UTC
Not when the system of play is a different system than what you're playing :P

Just because it's the same board doesn't mean the game can be represented by the same rankings, ie, chess and checkers.

I'm just butt hurt about possibly not being allowed to participate :P
trip (696 D(B))
15 Aug 11 UTC
@ tnt: I agree that GRs don't accurately reflect gunboat ability, but there's no other ranking system, besides the total points one used here, to go by. If someone has a better way to rank players that is not too complicated, I'm alll ears.
Ghost Ranking explicitly devalues gunboat games relative to regular games. I love the system but it's a terrible way to establish priority for entry to a gunboat tournament.
trip (696 D(B))
15 Aug 11 UTC
@ PE: It's not terrible or unfair to reward players with high GR with a tournament where they get to play against others with the similar credentials. It's also not unfair for me to choose how I want to go about selecting entrants. Both of those things being said, it is unfair to base gunboat ability on GRs, but like I said above, let me know if you have a better way.
Well, I never used the word "unfair." I said it was terrible because it weighs gunboat games with less value than standard games. If Player A and Player B have the exact same record, except all of A's games are in full press and B's are in gunboat, A has the higher GR without playing a single game.

Though I suppose it could also be said that it weighs gunboat losses less... And ultimately, I admit I have no alternative. I just hope that we don't boil it down to a comparison of a single number here, much though I again love that number and the system that produces it. (It's certainly served me well. ;D)
Yonni (136 D(S))

One could argue that the order in which people registered shows a certain level of enthusiasm and eagerness which may benefit the tournament.

That being said, I have obvious biases.

The current All-Time Rankings are just to get an idea of where people are. The rankings from Sept will be used to pick and rank players. <--- this will be noted on the tourney page shortly.

I know some people are not going to make the cut, and be upset about it, but there's no system besides including everyone to keep that from happening.

Please don't take this the wrong way, my intent is not to be callus, but anyone who doesn't get in can start up another tourney. If someone wants do another one with the next 28 players, I'd be all for it. With two or three tiered tourneys, this could run like the leagues, and players could move up or down depending on where they finished the previous year. Then, next year we wouldn't have to worry about using a system that doesn't fit to pick players.

" What is Ghost-Rating?

Ghost-Rating is an unofficial rating system developed by TheGhostmaker as an alternative to points. It intends to provide a more accurate measure of the ability of players, and also to give a better idea of how well people are doing compared to previously. The original version was developed in 2008, and based on the Elo used in chess, however the algorithm has been improved several times since then."

Donor Status
Question- I have a bronze donor symbol by my name. Is this fair within the game? Does it help my play, grant me "serious player" status so my word gets respected? Or make me a target instead?

I know that I look for that symbol in every game I am now entering. I treat others different when I see it. Is this part of the "spirit" of Diplomacy?
