Seriously, let's start getting in the habit of password protecting live games.
I am fucking sick to death of playing with morons the likes of whom make George W. Bush seem a far-sighted strategical thinker. Even when we do things like 101 point gunboats, which you would think would screen out idiot assholes at least moderately effectively, dumbasses get through.

mapleleaf. could you atleast keep the language clean?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
06 Dec 10 UTC
@ Baskineli: I don't see why you're asking Maple to keep the language clean.

For one thing, he is responding to Bob telling him to "fuck off, dickwad", so really you should aim your comments at Bob.

Secondly, it has been accepted for some fucking time, and discussed repeatedly on the forum, that swearing is perfectly fucking acceptable on this cunting site.
Baskineli (100 D(B))
06 Dec 10 UTC
Maybe this is the reason why there are so little good and serious discussions on this forum, because most normal and polite people try to keep a civilized conversation.

Freedom of speech is not a freedom to be an ass.

And I only read the last comment, so I addressed mapleleaf, but this of course applies to BGK as well.

Maple - BGK is an ass, and a lawyer to boot, which makes him doubly ass-ish. The hillarious thing about his complaint is that Germany - the eventual winner - in *no way* took advantage of the Austria CD....Italy did. So, in fact, it turned out to be a hell of a well played game by Czech. Good game, Czech!

I used to play this game on this site last year and the year before. I got too busy to keep it up. I thought I'd try and get back into it today, on my birthday. I remember it being a quite astonishing community. There were very thoughtful discussions and, with only a couple exceptions, very thoughtful people.
Congratulations, guys. I'm not sure I really want to spend any of my time here any more. This disgusts me.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@Bumble

I found over 10 seriously thoughtful, or appropriately fun threads on the front page. If you are easily offended, don't read certain threads. It's as simple as that. In fact, you don't need to read the forum at all to play diplomacy on this site.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Honestly, I looked at the map at I think maple was justified not cancelling. It's a shame when someone CDs, but in this particular case, it wasn't that bad. He sped things up in the East by maybe 1 year by CDing. And the winner of the game was actually at a disadvantage by the CD, so congratulations there.

Also, this thread really shouldn't have been made while the game was still ongoing. He could see your votes in-game. This was unnecessary.
Barn3tt (41969 D)
06 Dec 10 UTC
Yeah, generally speaking canceling because one power cd's is totally optional. The difference in this game was that it was a large pot game (for live play)- the entire intent being for a quality game. An 02 cd is rather disruptive even if we have gotten somewhat use to it in live play. Italy and every other power (save England) did click cancel very early on.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
06 Dec 10 UTC
But, Bob does have the proper solution to this. PW the games and only allow people in who will cancel if there is a CD. Simple.

@ Baskineli: "Maybe this is the reason why there are so little good and serious discussions on this forum, because most normal and polite people try to keep a civilized conversation... And I only read the last comment..."

Actually in my experience one of the main reasons for the poor quality of some forum discussions is the way some annoying people leap into a thread without actually reading it, prompting them to spout forth ill-judged, poorly-formed comments which irritate the other people participating in the discussion. You should try to avoid this mistake in future by reading the whole thread before charging in.
The Bumblebee (100 D)

@abgemacht.

I see that there are plenty of thoughtful threads on this page. But at the same time, I'm most likely one of the youngest players here. So why do the language and personal attacks on this page scream immaturity to me.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
07 Dec 10 UTC
That's because it is immature. However, complaining about leaving the site over something that can easily be avoided is, too.

Understood. I'm not saying I'm certainly gone. I just thought that I might point out the level of unnecessary aggression on this thread. There are some fine requests, that I'd respect a lot more if they were worded more intelligently.
Again, I'm young. I swear. But when I want to make a point, my language is pristine. Its just more productive, and more likely to be heard. I thought more people here would have noticed the same pattern.
Hirsute (161 D)
07 Dec 10 UTC
Using excessive swearing makes it easier for people to dismiss you as an asshole. That's the best justification I can think of for not swearing. I personally don't have a problem with it, but when you use it in an aggressive way, your comments are more likely to be responded to in an equally aggressive way. If you speak in an "adult" tone, you are more likely to get an "adult" response.
Maniac (189 D(B))
07 Dec 10 UTC
@Bumble "Again, I'm young. I swear. But when I want to make a point, my language is pristine" Does thsi mean that you are swearing that you are young, or that you are young and you swear? Your language isn't pristine, if I have to ask. Please reword you sentances so that the meaning is obvious. Thanks.

I've just been defended by Jamiet99uk.

The Apocalypse is upon us.
Back again. I don't get why, especially in a game with the explicit purpose of being a high-value, well-played game, where every other person wants to scrap it because some douchebag CDs, and it's early enough that it's plainly not a cancellation vote based upon one power playing so well that they have attained an unassailable lead, one person would absolutely obstruct that overwhelming mandate to cancel. Essentially, it's taking advantage of a flaw in the game design; in a real-life game of Diplomacy, there's absolutely no way that someone could or would do that. But because we have anonymous players (a distortion itself) and no communication (yet another distortion), some chucklehead feels free to just jerk around with everyone else with no repercussions.

First post on this site ... brand new member ... so take it or leave it. We make the world we live in. I say avoid foul language & don't take it so seriously. A number of posters should be a little ashamed ... in a world where shame is tough to come by. Is it so hard to be civilized ... be a leader ... do things better than others? Looking forward to my next game and setting a new standard. Bumblebee? Nice job pointing out the immaturity.

I agree with you Bob. With a few exceptions, I think it's passworded live games for me too. I prefer gunboats, but I will join press games, so feel free to PM me. I don't play a ton of games, but if I see a message I'll give you a heads up on whether I'm in or not.

I dont get why someone like Bob acts like such as asshole over something like this.
If you want to make your games restricted, then just get on with it and spare us the tantrums.
damian (675 D)
09 Dec 10 UTC
@ Dhar That's too bad, passworded games are often of higher quality, due to the fact that not any joker can join them. Really it's your loss if you don't want to get involved in the passworded games. The rest of us aren't losing any sleep over your aversion to them.

Problem with password games.
The thing about this is that most of us who play for fun (but not in the idiotic sense of the word) are mostly out of password games for one specific reason: "big" players or "known" players don't know us. As of now, I've tried to be friendly and get to talk to at least one of the players of each game after the game is over, to find no response.

Why is it so hard to find your way through webDiplomacy to password games?

I would appreciate explanations.
I am not sure whether it makes sense to the game name is mentioned, because it is a "No in-game messaging, anonymous players' game is.
Can someone help me? Thank you!
