Grammar
I personally can't stand bad grammar and spelling. I'm in a game right now where I am seriously contemplating stabbing the crap out of my ally solely because I don't want to have to read the horrible writing anymore. While the stab is, I think, a pretty good one and I'll have help from my other new allies, is my main reason for doing it ridiculous? Or are there people out there who agree with me?

Yes, a Ridiculus reeson!!!!
So next time you play Pootercannon, remembre, speeling errorrs are gud. He licks them veery mush.

I don't mind bad grammar, but I have noticed there are many w/o a real sense of humor. I pretty much joke around in every game I'm in, but some are overly focused on European conquest. I figure to win some, lose some, or draw some, but have fun in every game.
LanGaidin (1509 D)

Especially the ones I win or draw.

There once was this player named pootercannon,
Who had a particular canon,
those grammar fools
had to play by rules
Or he would turn and bite em!

No apologies made,
For beggars or knaves,
Or players new to English.
Pootercannon no, he'd string you up,
and eit you,
no, eat, you,
No eat you!
Like a fish.

Forgive my lack of decent rhyme, rythm or meter. It was penned on the fly.

A Sword can be Friendly, it's true
When penning a poem that's new
Until comes the day that the Sword wants to play
And the one being conquered is you.
Well, looking at the originally post, I think that 'I personally believe' is grammatically dubious. The word 'personally' is entirely unnecessary, as it is in 'my own personal opinion'.

"my other new allies" You mean "my new allies". They aren't your other new allies
"Or are there people out there who agree with me?"
That's not a sentence!

:) That's a good one - I need more lame excuses to justify stabbing.

I want tos et up a game where all press must be in rhyme. Haiku and Limerick preferred :-)
Haiku's don't rhyme.
jbalcorn (429 D)

My bad. Changed ideas in mid-sentence.

All press must be in a poetic form :-) Or at least Interesting!

Wow. I didn't think my one little post was going to generate so much response. I was more looking for a few other reasons to stab someone besides trying to win the game.

I understand what some of you are saying regarding other nationalities and I meant no offense to anyone. English was also not my first language, although I did grow up in the US. Nobody has ever accused me of being a perfect writer, but bad spelling combined with a lot of typo's and bad grammar, a pretty hostile tone for the past year, AND the alliance was breaking anyway? It just makes it sweeter for me!

I have to agree with Troodonte, this is a stupid post. It offers nothing for the game, but sometimes it's fun to see someone else's point of view.
OMGNSO (415 D)

It may actually be that pootercannon was right, not because bad grammer is an abhorence, but because the mistakes were caused by his ally's nervousness as he prepared to stab pootercannon. This would be an amazing coincidence, but somehow I just think pc was being an ass.
Onar (131 D)

Bad grammar as a sign of nervousness? That's justification for you!

Everyone who is saying the mother tongue thing is ignoring something. It has been stated repeatedly that you can tell when someone is a native speaker with poor grammar and when someone is speaking English as a non-native. I sympathise pootercannon. Still, I'd rather another player conversed with me at length with bad grammar than gave me immaculate single sentences.

If expect everyone to follow your standard of grammar, then you should have such great grammar that you meet everyone else's expectations. I really doubt that betraying the guy is going to convince him to improve his grammar, so I don't really see what it would accomplish. Even if it did have a positive effect, you shouldn't try to force people to have perfect grammar, because its an unnecessary restriction on freedom.
I personally think that using good grammar is better than not, but I don't really care about insignificant things like its/it's or who/whom, because you can easily understand what the sentence is saying based on context. Also, there are plenty of situations where correct grammar isn't helpful or useful, such as books or movies, where it is out of character for some characters to use correct grammar.
I know you said you had other reasons for betraying him, but bad grammar isn't a legitimate reason.
LanGaidin (1509 D)
23 Apr 09 UTC
Bad grammer is not a sin.
But I wonder, is wanting to win?
When push comes to shove, I admit I just love
when the subterfuges begin

Diplomacy is like a rose
That's newly sprung in spring
It's beautiful when SCs grow
Till autumn, death dost bring.

The seas at first are wondrous fair
The land is o'en and free
Til fleets of enemies are everywhere
And armies at my borders I see

Diplomacy be like a drug
It consumes the mind and soul
Playing it, my wife it bugs
But makes me mineself feel whole.

"Even if it did have a positive effect, you shouldn't try to force people to have perfect grammar, because its an unnecessary restriction on freedom."

I'm sorry, that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. You have a right to bad grammar? Come on, now. It's not like that scene in Life of Brian where the centurion says he'll cut Brian's balls off if the Latin sentence isn't written all over the palace by sunrise. pootercannon's just ticked off by the other player's poor writing and is responding as he chooses.

Restriction on freedom? Give me a break. This is an internet game.

if you can understand what its saying, honestly....why the fuck does it matter? if you really get that pissed off over whether or not i capitalize my letters, you have OCD. and if you say im just destroying the english language...i know proper grammar, and if im writing a paper or something ill use it but why take the time on a game? language's main purpose is to convoy thoughts and ideas, and if it does that successfully, why piss and moan?
