at first i thought it sounded silly, but the more i thought about it i like it. if you need another observer, i'm in.

I thought it would be each observer is assigned one of the countries before the game started. Then, discusses the game from there on.

by my rough count there are 5ish players i havnt counted people who didnt directlly say they would play

why don't you make a list with what role people mentioned so folks can see if they were counted or not, and others can jump in.

no, i don't want to play but i would like the observers to talk in the forum so anyone that isn't playing can still see what is happening. so don't count me in.

i would like to play but i don't think i am on phpdip enough to be a reliable player or observer. it matters how often one would have to be on and the phase length of the game.

I think it would have to have 48 hour phases to allow the observers to actually have an interaction. Normally I go for every 25hrs, but i think that would turn it into a gunboat - what do people think?

I'de say 30 is a good minimum, but seeing as how I'm not around often(if at all) on the weekends, 48 is a good number, too.

I have a few questions..
Which way to play are you actually trying to get started? Are you playing where each observer is independent of powers and has whatever agenda they pick from the start, or are you playing where each country has an observer who is tied to the succes of a particular power?
I am in a gunboat game, and I am not a particular fan of that variant. Although it takes a lot less time to play gunboat, it just doesn't feel like the same game. It's called "Diplomacy" for a reason. The strategy of gunboat is interesting, I grant that, but it is just not the same. It's like playing 7 player chess.
I would like to play in this, but am unsure in what capacity until the format has been determined.

You mean play it so that the 7 observers are not linked to a country and have whatever objectives they decide at the start? Then count me in. I'll play the game and give headaches to the observers. :)

I would be interested in joining as a player. The observers' banter would give me something to read since I'm not in school reading textbooks anymore ;)!

The way I understand it, this is like Gunboat with a twist. That twist being that people outside of the game are trying to use their negotiating skills to steer the players in the game towards the direction they predicted the game would take. Is that a correct assessment or am I completely off the mark?

It makes it more interesting that instead of negotiating directly with the players, they instead can only negotiate with the other people observing the game. It would be very intriguing to see the effect that the observers have on the people actually involved in the game. Certainly a good indicator of the observer's powers of manipulation...
