A Public Announcement
Dear Feckless Clod,

As promised, here is a formal statement regarding your game "Grab Your Partners" (not sure if innuendo is was intended). The game has ended in a crushing landslide victory by the solo kid, Harry Noballs.

Best Wishes,

Rank System - RANKS!
I posted this in the Rank system vote thread, but I think it will get looked over, so I've copy and pasted it below. If we can implement an ELO system without having to eliminate the point system, this is what it might look like...

Lol, cgwhite actually is a reacher. CG, some career advice: If you get caught swindling expenses, learn to make some mighty fine tea.

Xapi: The reason for starting players at 60 and bumping up is two-fold:
1. If they start at 100 then they will inflate other people's ratings
2. If a player turns up and does well from the start, you know pretty quickly they are a good player (by the first ten games), for example, see TheMahatma and MadMarx. If they start at 100 then their ratings after ten aren't particularly remarkable, but for a start of 60, their ratings are better. Conversely, from the first ten games you cannot really tell that a player is very bad, just that they are below par, and this stops them getting too low a rating too fast.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
28 Aug 08 UTC
And you don't have to list them in the ranking anyway (just have the Elo-rating, rather than as number, as "Unrated- Beginner"

Churchill, I've been away a bit, but those look great! I do like the medals and how they sort of look military-like, but not quite. And I think diplomatic titles would be better suited for dip than military ones.
Also, love the idea of joke ranks for those below the introductory elo level.

Anyway, I'll be gone for a few more days. I'll check back though. Keep the ideas coming and maybe we can all agree on something. Glad I was able to get the ball rolling. :)

I've actually had a thought. I think the Sovereign and the Lord's Council ranks should be awarded on top of the Master Diplomat rank. The Lord's Council is the top X (100?) and the sovereign is the highest. These would be even more prestigious as they would be in addition to the cool looking Master Diplomat Rank.

Here are the new ranks (link to pic at the bottom):

Pen Pusher
Tea-Maker
Photocopier
Bag Carrier
Driver
Applicant
Grunt
Aide
Researcher
Advisor
Senior Advisor
Gate Keeper
Chief of Staff
Assistant Attaché
Attaché
Under-Secretary
Assistant Secretary
Deputy Secretary
Secretary
Counselor
Minister Counselor
Minister
Ambassador
Diplomat in Training
Assisting Diplomat
Acting Diplomat
Appointed Diplomat
Experienced Diplomat
Renouned Diplomat
Master Diplomat
Lord's Council
Sovereign

OOOOOOOOO AAAAAAHHHH

Churchill:
hey since there are many perms for the ranking/name/points is there any way to put all of the permutations on one webpage so that it is easier to compare them.

and not trying to make this a hastle but is it possible to put the rank first followed by your points and then your name because i think that would like organized.
N1ghthawk (0 DX)
30 Aug 08 UTC
and by "like organized" i meant look organized
I think the insignia shown in the integration jpg are a bit too complicated - you seem to have a mix of army, navy & military decorations as you insignia.

As more people are familiar with the army ranks, perhaps you should stick to those and just have different colours if you want to differentiate extra levels in between.
WhiteSammy (132 D)
30 Aug 08 UTC
they are in different colors and the rank developement is in a reasonable and easy to understand order. i think that that is good enough
Churchill (2280 D)
31 Aug 08 UTC
Neville,

I took my inspirations from as many sources as I could, an made a simple, hierarchy that is easy to determine for any one who does not have a knowledge of ranks.

I'd have no objection to looking at your proposal of how they should look.

Sammy has it right, I've tried to progress in color with a simple progress of symbols.

For N1ghtawk:

Trainee V Pen Pusher
Trainee IV Tea-Maker
Trainee III Photocopier
Trainee II Bag Carrier
Trainee I Driver
Recruit Applicant
Soldier Grunt
Solider First Class Aide
Sergeant Researcher
Petty Officer Advisor
Petty Officer First Class Senior Advisor
Senior Petty Officer Gate Keeper
Command Petty Officer Chief of Staff
Officer Cadet Assistant Attaché
Officer Attaché
Sub-Lieutenant Under-Secretary
Lieutenant Assistant Secretary
Senior Lieutenant Deputy Secretary
Sub-Captain Secretary
Captain Counselor
Brigade Captain Minister Counselor
Sub-Commander Minister
Commander Ambassador
General Diplomat in Training
Major General Assisting Diplomat
General of the Armed Forces Acting Diplomat
Emisary Appointed Diplomat
Consul Experienced Diplomat
Diplomat Renouned Diplomat
Master Diplomat Master Diplomat
Grand Master Lord's Council
Sovereign Sovereign

I'll do this in a graphic tonight: I have a date...

and any other way to do the rank/points/name like ^ those

so will the ELO system take into account the quality of the opposition? As the league one doesn't really do that.

I need a favour from someone in the UK
My company is setting up operations in Britain. I've secured two freephone (toll free) numbers and need to test that they are working right, but a test can only be effected from within the UK and I know of no one who can do this for me.

If you're in the UK and are willing to telephone two freephone numbers for me, just to verify that they ring through properly, I would be most appreciative.

Drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll provide you this the freephone numbers.

And thanks. Yaniv

Since i have always wondered what makes people think that something either has a 100% chance of being possible and shuns all those who dont think likewise or that something is completely impossible and cant believe that anyone in their right mind could believe something so far-fetched, I have a good one.

Ingame solution for multi-account?
I am strongly suspicious that france and turkey are the same person in a game I am playing:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5374

This is based on past game history and France trying to talk me down from attacking Turkey (its 1902). I'm Italy in this game and it makes sense for me to avoid fighting france but to follow through with my stab on turkey. Assuming they aren't kicked off (which they should be) or until then what am I expected to do? This throw the game into an unfortunate loop.

Skipped phase in "002b"?
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5460 That's the URL. I think the current phase should be Autumn 1902, but there's a chance that I'm horribly mistaken. It now lists the current phase as Spring 1903. Will somebody check on that and make sure I'm not crazy?

Support?
I know this has come up before, but here goes. I want to move a fleet in Constantinople to Bulgaria(sc) with support from the Black Sea. From what I've read in the forum in the past, this is a valid support. The game, however, does not give me the option to support a move to Bulgaria(sc); only Bulgaria and Bulgaria(nc). This is regarding a move that will be processed in 24 hours, so time is a factor for responses.

We have entered the final day for applications to the league system. There is place for one player more. If somebody drops out, then you may be able to take their place, so even if somebody has taken the place, you could still get in.

Possible bug in game 5406
In game #5406, 'the greatest game ever told', shouldn't Tyrolia's attack on Munich in Autumn of 1902 have cut Munich's attack on Burgundy? Maybe it's changed since I last played, or maybe I'm just crazy.

Could anyone shed some light on this?

I might disappear for a few days
I'm sure many people have heard of the civil unrest here in Thailand incited by the PAD. There have been rumours that some protesters may attempt to cut Bangkok's power - if that happens I lose my access to the internet until it gets restored.

There was a clash between Government supporters and PAD protesters this morning and there was a death. The military did state that they would get involved soon afterwards. I do believe that since the rumours are so widespread that the military would be able to prevent it but I don't know for certain.

Anyways, my fingers are crossed that everything will be sorted out.

Surrendering
I'm GMing my first Diplomacy game in a while at another site, and I've received a request from one of my players that I'm not sure how to handle. The player in question has the low supply center count and is in a very precarious situation (current season is Summer 1904), and has requested that he surrender his territories and units to another nation that he is allied with rather than have them fall into the hands of the nations that are attacking him.

I know this isn't in the scope of the official rules, so I'm curious to know if there's any precedent for allowing something like this or not. (My inclination is to allow it, but I'd appreciate some direction from people more knowledgeable than myself.) :-)
