ACA Premium Reimbursement
Today I was refunded a decent amount of last year's insurance premium through my company because our insurer didn't spend enough of their income from premiums on claims. What is going on here that some people are seeing their premiums double while some insurers literally don't have enough claims. Is it just happenstance that this provider only has healthy people? A civil, informed discussion would be appreciated, if at all possible.

Let's change the subject
Since there's so much rage about the American political situation, I thought I'd change it up a bit. Who do you think the next Australian PM will be?

*sigh* Time for a game of Who Said It:

"But I still believe in America, and I always will. And if you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future. Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead. Our constitutional democracy enshrines the peaceful transfer of power.

We don't just respect that. We cherish it."

I'm pretty sure that protesting is a right protected under freedom of speech, and fundamental to being a free democratic society.

So, fuck, off?

Liberal fearmongering as usual. Liberals have shown time and time again that they're far more violent.

Setting one against the other is what the 1% use to subjugate the masses. Rhetoric aside, Trump (at the behest of Ryan and McConnell) appears to be indistinguishable from W, seeking tax cuts for the wealthy as the first legislative priority.

@leon, you do realize that Liberal does not apply to everyone who voted for Hillary Clinton right? Or that it's not an all inclusive word for Democrats? No 2 people will ever agree completely on anything. But I find it concerning that you're willing to classify an entire group of people as violent.

That is the exact reason this election was the disaster on both sides that it was. Because people on both sides, including the candidates, made sweeping generalizations and classifications about demographics instead of focusing on trying to fix the problems fixing the country.

You may not like "liberals" but you need to accept that around half the country does not have views that agree with you. And if anything productive is ever going to get done then EVERYONE is going to have to figure out how to get along and understand each other.

Facts are facts no matter how bothersome they may be to you, jmo. Who are the ones rioting on the streets and who have been doing so for the past few years? Not conservatives. Which political party's members have committed the most mass shootings? The Democratic Party. Who do most felons vote for? Democratic candidates. Now, I know you say that not all Democrats are liberals, but the overwhelming majority at least claims to be liberal. Fact of the matter is, liberals are more violent.
TrPrado (461 D)
15 Nov 16 UTC
Can you cite those facts?
leon1122 (190 D)
15 Nov 16 UTC
Riots? No, but I doubt anyone will dispute it.

Can't find source to back up mass shootings, but did find source supporting the fact that most homicides were committed by liberals. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2016/06/robert-farago/firearms-related-homicides-democratic-vs-republican-affiliation/

Felons are Democrats: http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/jail-survey-nearly-34-felons-register-as-democrats/article/2541412
TrPrado (461 D)
15 Nov 16 UTC
At least you can cite some of those facts. However can you point a definitive reason as to why the ones you cited are the case? I don't think there's much more damaging to political discourse than going into the discussion automatically assuming there's a moral high ground over the opponent.
leon1122 (190 D)
15 Nov 16 UTC
Why? Three factors: millennials, Hispanics, and African Americans, all 3 of which are overwhelmingly liberal (not so much Hispanics).

Many millennials, especially along the coasts, have successfully been indoctrinated into thinking that Republicans are racist and that they're evil, so they obviously can't accept the fact the the most racist and evil one of them all got elected and so they throw a tantrum by rioting.

Blacks have been rioting ever since the formation of BLM and even before that with the riots in the 1970s. This has to do with cultural and genetic factors.

Hispanics, the liberal ones, have also been a violent political force recently, partly because the mainstream media has taught them how "angry" and "afraid" they should be.

Let me repeat the important part you seem to have missed.

You may not like "liberals" but you need to accept that around half the country does not have views that agree with you. And if anything productive is ever going to get done then EVERYONE is going to have to figure out how to get along and understand each other.
leon1122 (190 D)
15 Nov 16 UTC
That has absolutely nothing to do with what I was addressing. Randomizer said that liberals should be very afraid. I was merely responding that liberals are far more violent and thus it should be conservatives that are fearful.

"3. Do not make targeted threads that are abusive or degrading toward another member, group of members, or social group. This includes but is not limited to posts regarding sexuality, race, and religion."

Claiming that a race of people riots due to genetic factors very clearly violates this rule, and will not be accepted on this site.

1. google genetics. you might be surprised at what it means
2. on culture: NOW who is making sweeping generalizations? Huh?

There is scientific evidence that blacks produce about 20% more testosterone (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3455741) than whites, and that is definitely genetic. Obviously, testosterone is linked to energy, anger, and... riots.

"Yet scientists hypothesize that this violence is just one manifestation of the much more biologically and reproductively salient goal of dominance."

So... you're saying blacks have a biologically and reproductively salient goal of dominance?

"What Dabbs didn't address was whether this correlation was the cause or an effect of the environment these men found themselves in. Which is to say, are high-testosterone males more likely to become violent criminals, or does being a violent criminal raise a man's level of testosterone?"

Or that some other factor causes such a large number of blacks to be violent that it shows up in the form of increased testosterone across the board?

Note, these are not my opinions, but what I derive from bo_sox's article.

So I think most of the world is in agreement that the universe is so big that life almost definitely exists on other planets. That question is kind of boring though. The real question is, have aliens had contact with earth in the present or past.
The results are in, and the evidence points to a resounding yes!

Maniac 2020
Recent appointments to high office have created controversy among progressive, intelligent people. I'm talking about two things, of course. First of all, the election of Donald Trumpf as Leader Of The Free World (TM). Secondly, and no less controversially, the selection of a new Moderator who was not Maniac.

A Divide
I've seen horrible reactions these past 24 hours. Some celebrate that they have a champion, thinking he will bring this country to its greatest times. Others panic, fearing the same man will erode their rights and encourage persecution which will endanger their lives. Those whose views don't fall into that binary shirk away, fearing their voice is no longer welcome. This thread is about the lofty goal of uniting a further dividing nation.

Refugees and Asylum seekers
So i had a thought, under international law, those seeking asylum are entitled to protection if they have reason to fear for their life. Thus pretty much anyone fleeing the Syrian war should probably automatically be granted asylum.

What about LGBT folk from the US, fearing political repression and violence in the streets. Should we (europeans) open our borders?
