Help me buy a scientific computing desktop
Inspired by the other thread, can I ask you guys for some more advice? I'm looking to buy a desktop for $1000-2000, to use for my work in the lab. Almost every project I do has a serious numerical computation component to it, so I want to max out on computational power. I don't care about graphics though.

Most or least favourite to play
I was just curious what people's most and least favourite countries to play were and why. Does it correspond to the rankings of which countries win the most games?

He's played 18 classic games at PlayDip and soloed 12 of them, many of which were populated with the top guys they have to offer. That man's a beast.

TrPrado (461 D)
16 Jul 15 UTC
I'll say Chumbles. Also, having played against BB, I think VI is overselling him. He was kind of mediocre, but he did have some really eloquent press. He's also the only person in this game I've actually played against.

I reckon once we see who's got what country, peanut gallery should make guesses about S1901 moves. :-)

Winner is whoever correctly predicts the most unit orders, ties resolved by whoever posted their guess first.
Well this is fun.

If anyone has interest, here's a link to an intro on me from a game we played on Playdip last year: http://goo.gl/wecUc7

I'm sorry it's so long-winded, and I'll try hard to be more succinct in the game.

I've been playing diplomacy for about 16 months now, and I haven't played a non-anonymous game in about 13 months. Absolutely thrilled to shed the shackles of anonymity. I'm spending way too much effort on Playdip these days trying to disguise my identity. In this one, I can just be me! My apologies.

Also grateful to be playing with a bunch of folks with much bigger targets than me. That Peter Wiggin guy seems pretty unstoppable guys, don't you agree?
VillageIdiot (7813 D)
16 Jul 15 UTC
I'm really not. P.Wig and BB are both two of the best players i've ever come across and i actually consider them to be almost identical in styles of play. I only give BB a slight edge here since i consider him a little more hungry for the win. Either way i've been looking forward to this showdown ever since BB came for the visit on the site, can't wait to see how this plays out. I suspect this is just going to be a preview for an inevitable showdown in the OCD finals.
Hey VillageIdiot -- stop it! Stop complimenting me! Nobody believes you.

We all know you're playing the long game, and setting yourself up for your own, under the radar, "Oh, I guess that's 18 guys, what does that mean? What? That means I win? Really?" victory in the ODC.

I usually get solos by playing live games and exploiting people who have no idea what they're doing or just don't show up. Don't be deceived by my high solo rate. I couldn't even score a single point in the last masters!

I'm too tired from pming dozens of player trying to get 7 to send much press anyways!
Yaleunc (11052 D(B))
16 Jul 15 UTC
Trprado - that game you found is a full press Classic, though in my defense I forgot about that one as it was a CD position I took over very late. I think I also have a FP live Ancient Med game, though live FP isn't really FP anyway.
VillageIdiot (7813 D)

Well yeah, the OCD (i mean ODC) tournament trophy already has my name etched on it.

I mean c'mon ... it's me.

Sure as hell doesn't have my name
Chumbles (791 D(S))
16 Jul 15 UTC
Before anyone plonks any squiddlies on me, most of my high win rate is down to being hooked on Ancient Med. Besides, most of my play style was learned in the 70s and 80s and is by definition outdated. :¬) I'd listen to VI, he's played against me and knows how weak I really am. Besides I'm a Civ IV and CK2 fanatic which get my main attention. I'm a doddery, illness riddled old fool, so save your money

When negotiating....please remember all of the good things ATC has done for us over this past year. Do you really want to be the one responsible for mistreating the woman so beloved by all?
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
16 Jul 15 UTC
The legendary A_Tin_Can is a fearless warrior. A puncher of sharks, disposer of snakes, stamper of spiders... he's fought off crocodiles and pissed on jellyfish just to be here today; and that was just yesterday alone. As he sits on his beach, sipping a fosters and lighting the barbie, he's ready to crush all those who attempt to deceive him with their shonky messages. Battle-scarred. Triumphant. Australian. Beware: they got deported to that island for a reason.

Before the game even starts, someone should scan all players' recent games and come up with odds on who is going to play which power. Closest to the actual lineup wins!
JamesYanik (548 D)

i dont wanna
Sure, this is fun.

peterwiggin: Germany
yaleunc: France
Chumbles: Italy
uclabb: England
Daximus: Russia
Balki: Turkey
ATC: Austria
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
16 Jul 15 UTC
Having used some intense calculating:

England: A_Tin_Can
France: Daximus
Germany: uclabb
Italy: yaleunc
Austria: Chumbles
Russia: peterwiggin
Turkey: Balki
@HR: Well, with you being a mod and all, it makes it easier for you to make sure your lineup happens.
Just curious, how are assignments made? Is it random?
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
16 Jul 15 UTC
Not quite random. It's weighted so that you're a little less likely to roll a country you've already rolled recently.

Of course, you and Daximus don't exactly have lots of games for it to weight on there.

Idea for a Diplomacy Game
I know there is a vdip variant where you only have one SC but I think it would be interesting to get a game going on here where It has unique rules.
1. You can only move one unit per turn. And you can only move additional units for every SC you gain.
2. By Spring of the 2nd year you could be moving 2 units, and so on and so forth.
anyone ever done anything like that?

Is this the longest game ever?
This game has been going for 2 (100 in game years) years as it is the 2012 world cup. It must be the longest or most back and forth game ever. In fact Austria was down to 1 supply centres near the 1/3 mark but is still alive! Imagine the commitment. If anyone has spectated all the way through I congratulate you, also well done to the players for the commitment they have shown.

So if I wanted to produce a pc-game...
How would I go about that? I probably need a team because I don't have the technical know-how. Where to start though?
No, I won't be jumping into this without knowing what the hell I'm doing. In fact, I won't start anytime soon. This is just the very first reconnaissance. What kind of people do I need and how do I know they'll do the job well? What can I reasonably do myself? I decide what the game should be like for the biggest part.
