The tournament scene used to be amazing, especially the Leagues. We really don't have the same caliber of players that we used to. Or, if we do, they are not nearly as active.

Put some sort of incentive out there for people to be engaged. Plaques trophies or some kind of place of honor on the front page of the site. I know it's another thing for Kestas and the coders but when people look at site there should be goals to shoot for

The first Master's was amazing (or at least it seemed that way to me as I was an up and comer at the time getting some of my first cracks at the site's elite). What is probably worth remembering about it, though, is that it was called the Masters because it was originally organized by TheMasterGamer, one of the best players ever on the site, with the express intention of creating a tournament where everyone was playing for the win. It was a novel idea with one of the best players on the site orgainizing it, so all of the best players wanted to play.

Out of morbid curiousity I looked up TheMasterGamer. 50% win rate, with a straight up win 51/103 games. Incredible.

Great to be rethinking on this Gold. I totally agree with abge and HR on the timing/complementarity though.

I like the WC concept (Team Holland anybody?) and the Masters, but the leagues I never got into. I think the most important TD skill in a way is to make sure that the tempo is high enough, so make sure games flow properly (lots of replacements handy for missing players!). The recent GB tourney was a great example - so much fun / speed that even the losers made a separate bracket to continue the fun.

I often think we have too many people in the Tournaments which means more dependance on less reliable people. Maybe require a minimum # of completed games to join.

What I liked about the Leagues is that it was essentially a 4 game series with slightly staggered starts which didnt require a huge commitment (3ish months). Keeping phases somewhat short helps too. Nothing worse than retreat/build phases dragging for a week.

I played all the Masters editions and first edition was the best tournament ever by far. Also a good introduction to the true game spirit for newbies (win or don´t let anyone win). But I agree that finding 49 reliable players for a 6 months (at least) tournament is a bit too much now. Maybe a short edition, where you play 4 or 5 games could be a good start.
The leagues were also great, but playing same people and all the metagaming involved made a lot of players drop out and it´s hard to avoid this kind of issue in this format.
And World Cup is fun, I am proud to be a member of Team South America, first winner of the World Cup \o/

By the way, I will be willing to play in any of them, just don´t start all of them at same time.

I think, as someone said above, pacing has been an issue (at least for the Masters tournament). The Leagues have always been 25 hour phases. The other two are 36 hour

Fairly new to the site so haven't played in any tournament before, but definitely interested in anything thats coming up in the future.

I want to add that I agree with suggestions made here as well as on other threads before - There needs to be more of an incentive system in place. Badges, plaques on the front page, integrated GR etc - will all help to incentivise people.
