Being pushed 25km in a wheelchair
This crazy Dutch kid just grabbed me and made me sit in a wheelchair. He looked pretty crazy and I figured he was suffering from an overdose of earth radiation so I didn't resist. He then proceeded to run 25km over some very bumpy terrain, with me in the chair, despite my increasingly vocal protestation.

Running 25km, pushing someone in a wheelchair..?
It's one of those crazy thoughts I had. I figured I'd at least get myself informed. I'm now allowed to try it according to the council that matters, although I'd be forced to start in the back and stuff like that.
So I already have the green light in the bank, but can I even do this? Finishing time registration ends after 3 hours, so I guess I'd really want to run it within 3 hours. Possible?

2014 Webdiplomacy Tournament
I will start taking signups for the tournament. Here's how it will be different:

There will be a cash buy-in. The amount depends on the number of people that can commit (and buy-in) to the tourney. If I can get at least 25 players, the buy-in is $10. This would allow me to use the proceeds to purchase plaques for the top 3 places and best country awards. The remainder ($50-$100) would go to the site as a donation for allowing us to put together this tournament.

Perhaps we could get some more details before people sign up?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
17 Sep 14 UTC
Here are all of the gory details:

This will be a full-press, WTA tournament with 36-hour phases. I prefer it to be non-anonymous, but a majority vote by the players will change it to anonymous games. All games will continue in the event of an NMR. I hope that no one goes into CD. If a CD occurs, the game will pause and we will find an "unofficial" replacement player. If no one is forthcoming, the game will end and players will receive scores based on a draw scenario at that point.

The cash buy-in will be set at $20 initially and if we can get at least 25 players playing, the cash buy-in will decrease to $10.

Each game will have a D buy-in as well. Games may vary depending on the pot that the players wish to put into the game, although the minimum amount that any single player is willing to put into the pot is the one that is honored for that game.

This will be a 3-round tournament. Starting dates depend on the availability of players.

The scoring system will be as follows:

Each player will begin with 50 D. At the end of each round, each player will score a number of points equal to the amount of centers controlled in excess of the average. What this means is that if there are 4 boards, and players playing Italy end the game with 0 centers, 0 centers, 4 centers and 12 centers, the average is 4 centers for all players playing Italy. Players 1 and 2 would receive -4 D because they had 4 D below average. Player 3 receives 0 D since they had average and player 4 receives 8 D for being 8 D above average. The "average" score for any given country will always be rounded down to the nearest whole number (so an average of 4.75 rounds down to 4, not up to 5).

Averages are cumulative. Therefore, after round 2, there would be 8 boards contributing to the average for the second round. Scores will not be retroactively changed.

After all 3 rounds have been played and scores are tallied, the winner is the highest number of points, and similarly for 2nd and 3rd place. In the event of a tie, total center count across all 3 games will be used to break the tie.

Best country awards will be granted to the player with the most centers obtained for a respective country. Closest opponent in a given game will be used to break a tie (so if 2 players solo with 18 centers as Russia, but one has a 16 sc France while the other has a collection of smaller countries, the latter would be declared the winner of the Best Russia award).

All those diplomacy point symbols are a reference to points within the scoring system, not actual webdip points.

17 Sep 14 UTC
I'm in. Not quite sure how the scoring is working but I'll leave that to you Tru. 10-20 dollars is fine. Is the donation going directly to site or are you going to collect and do one payment. I don't care either way.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
17 Sep 14 UTC
All donations go to the site. Once the games begin, I will give Zultar the ordering information for the plaques.

I've used the scoring system before in FtF games and I like it because it reduces the effectiveness of someone drawing a country like France in all 3 games when most people play France really well. It's designed to level the playing field for countries (as much as can really be done).

I liked the scoring system, but not sure if this will not have some side effects (metagaming) if the games aren´t anonymous, at least on the last round.
In a FtF this isn´t a big problem as you can´t look the other boards while you are still playing, but in the Web people will start doing some calculation in the final round.

Anyway, I am interested in playing.

Again, if a majority vote for anonymous, then that's the route we will go (votes of "i don't care" won't be counted, so it will just be anon votes vs non-anon)

Good luck with this.
I think you should re-consider the rule on CD "If no one is forthcoming, the game will end and players will receive scores based on a draw scenario at that point."
This would enable a beaten player to use the prospect of going into CD as a threat against a player who has established a winning position eg 'give me back my two centres or I will bring the game to a premature end!"
May I sign up, please?

@thomasdullan: you are correct, although (a) I would hope that those signing up are serious about the game and not in it to simply screw a game, and (b) just because you're eliminated in one game doesn't mean you're out of the tournament. There are still 2 other games that are used to tabulate your score.

I will review and see what I can come up with.

I will TD this tournament to ensure it rolls smoothly. If it does, then I will be in it next year. Too much on my plate right now. The high school I work for is currently in the process of hiring a new teacher, but the new one is only certified to teach 9th grade, but class sizes are in the upper 30's in classes like Algebra 2 and Geometry which the new teacher can't teach by law. That means other teachers need to shuffle classes.

In the shuffle, I will gain a class without losing any, meaning I'm teaching 5 classes including AP Calculus while others teach only 4 and have a "prep" period. I also help out with tutoring after school 3x per week, so I'm definitely out.

I do like the pool of people we have so far. Very solid competition.
