How does one ask a raise without sounding greedy?
This year I'm much more busy than last year so I kind of don't consider it worth it in terms of money to continue teaching some children mathematics for what I used to get paid. I suppose I do enjoy doing it, but for that money I'd rather do other things I suppose..
How do I explain this and ask for a raise, most likely through texting or similar, without sounding greedy?

The Celebrity Phone Hacking
I'm kind of happy of the response to this, ten years ago the victims would be blamed in the media, it seems the message that it's not the victim's fault that they were violated has come across strongly. I think that wouldn't have been the case just 10 years ago

@ghug, are you aware that apple automatically backs up most if not all of your pictures on your ipod, etc every time you sync to a cloud unless you have it specifically disabled? Are you aware that the cloud keeps your pictures there even if you delete them from that device? I wasn't, on the 2nd part. I consider myself pretty technical, so in my eyes that pretty well justifies people who's careers aren't tech based not having a clue.

If you want it private, then store it someplace with no remote access.

Really after the phone hacking scandal in Great Britain by News Corp, does any celebrity think anything they do is safe? Even if the person is caught and jailed, the photos are out there and spreading on the Internet.

@PE, sorry but I disagree, if apple wants to auto enable cloud backups of phones, which contain financial information, and other important information to a cloud then they are damn well responsible for making sure that their customers know it's happening and how to opt out. It's only common to keep things out of the cloud if the company explains what a cloud is. 99% of people don't understand exactly how a cloud works, and there are many different types, with cloud security altering based on type and company. I find it irresponsible of apple to have kept their customers uninformed of the dangers and their lacking security. Obviously if apple had a disclaimer saying a cloud is an online storage system, think carefully about allowing sensitive information on it, then it'd be more on the victims, but not in this case.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Does Apple really not tell you when they upload photos? That's inexcusable.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
02 Sep 14 UTC
Looking into it now, since I'm curious it looks like they show a screen the first time you sync saying something like "would you like to enable cloud syncing" with it being recommended saying "this allows you to securely share your contacts, apps, songs, photo's, etc with all of your devices. After that you never see an option again unless you go digging for it. So I assume it's read like a terms and conditions notice that everyone checks yes for.

So I just went and turned it on for my itouch, and I literally cannot find a single option in iTunes on how to disable it. It's extremely non-user friendly. I wouldn't blame anyone for not knowing their songs/contacts/apps/photos were being uploaded, and I certainly wouldn't blame them for not knowing that apple keeps them past deletion.

Interesting note, if you have a direct link to a facebook picture and someone deletes the image from facebook you can still access it via the direct link for a minimum of 6 months. Curious how you cannot find that fun fact on any of facebook's FAQ's or user warnings.

There's a huge lack of concern from large companies on taking steps to make sure their users understand the security implications of new and unusual technology. Should people theoretically know how to stay safe online, sure. Realistically though, it's extremely difficult and the sad truth is anyone with enough time will eventually be able to hack anything to get your information if they really really want it. Not something we'll ever have to worry about, but celebrities do. The best defense against it is strongly punishing the people who do take the time and effort to violate people's information.

More to the point: the leak has already happened. Do justice, but for the victims, it's not really relevant anymore to talk about prevention, in their case. Rather, let's talk about us.

Who is going to look at those pictures? It takes two to tango, the creepy hacker, and you. I say, looking at those pictures is as low as leaking them. There's no need. I hope none of you have sought them out. It's nothing we need to see. It's not edifying at all.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
02 Sep 14 UTC
Looking at the pictures might be low but it's not as low as hacking numerous celebrity's personal photos and sharing them with people that never would have otherwise seen them, Thucy. Continuing to download, save, and repost them is pretty low though and apparently there's a ton of that going on.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
02 Sep 14 UTC
Really Thucy, you don't think talking about prevention is important, you don't think that those people who were victims shouldn't take future precautions to make sure it doesn't happen to them again in 6 months?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

In related news, some of the leaked pictures constitute child porn, so if you did share them, you've committed a federal offense.

and you don't think that apple and other companies should be held responsible for failing to educate their customers what was happening to their data? That affects us...
Thucydides (864 D(B))

All I'm saying is, if you don't look at them, they were never hacked. The act of the hacking is only a problem in that the hacker himself sees them. Other than that, the responsibility is with the people who looks at them knowing what they are.

The blame game is not really useful though. All you need to know is: there is no excuse for looking at them.

If your old friend from college had nude pictures of her leaked online, would you seek them out. These celebrities are not public property, as much as our nasty culture might think they are. The fact that the picture are available in no way excuses looking at them. There's no equivocation to be done. Looking at them is wrong. It's as simple as that.

And that's how I feel. I know at least someone reading this has seen them. I don't hate you. I don't think you're scum. I myself, when I didn't know better, looked up Scarlett Johansson's nude pictures. But I regret that. It was wrong, even if she is supporter of Israeli occupiers. It doesn't matter who she is. I don't love Kim Kardashian. I think she has not been a force for good in the world. It doesn't mean anyone deserves to see her naked pictures.

If you looked at them, I hope realize you should have known better, and know what to do next time this type of thing happens: don't seek it out. You don't need to. Just live your life in peace.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
No it's relevant jmo, I just think an even more important discussion, given that there has already been this major leak, is the ethics of looking at them. There's time for prevention later. In the immediate, those pictures are online.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
Because again, as I said, it takes two to tango. All nude leaks and hacks are meaningless, effectively, if we as a culture are not debased enough to take the bait

"All I'm saying is, if you don't look at them, they were never hacked. The act of the hacking is only a problem in that the hacker himself sees them. Other than that, the responsibility is with the people who looks at them knowing what they are."

No offense, but that's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Hacking is illegally breaking into someone's computer or electronic devices. A sexual crime is having in your possession pictures of minors. Do you think a jury gives a rats ass on whether you've looked at the pictures you stole or not? Hint, they don't.

That is stunningly naive Thucy, quite surprising from you.

I am too, by your reasoning it's okay for me to break into someone's house and steal some pictures from them. As long as I don't look at them who cares right? WRONG, it's an invasion of their privacy no matter what is done during that invasion. Now lets get into danger it poses to EVERY other cloud user alive. As soon as these pictures were posted and the method revealed there was a window where anyone with good technical skills suddenly knew that apple was vulnerable. This put millions of peoples data at risk. Now did apple get the vulnerability fixed before anyone else got in, who knows. The point is there is so much more inherent wrong with hacking then simply an invasion of 1 persons privacy.

Not all humans are good, and not all good humans act good all the time, sorry to disappoint you. But a perfect culture where no one will look at pictures or take advantage of something like this doesn't exist, has never existed, and will never exist. You can get varying degrees of culture where less people will re-share those pictures, where less people will look. But you will never find a culture where everyone's definition of right and wrong matches perfectly. Sorry.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
No, Jesus. It's not okay to hack people's stuff at all. You're severely misinterpreting me, and quibbling

And thanks for letting me know that people act shitty a lot, I never noticed. Silly naive old me.

What does the fact that people are assholes and are beating off to those pictures right now have to do with whether it's okay for you to look at them? You're missing the point. I'm talking from your perspective, what's the right reaction to the leak? *Don't look at them*

That's literally all I'm saying
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Essentially: will you participate in the hacker's evil, or not? We are all presented with this choice at this very hour. All of us are online. All of us can find the pictures if we want to. And so there it is. Talk about prevention as much as you want, I think it's a good thing to talk about. I just wanted to also say, while you're protecting your own data and so on, *dont look at those poor people's private photos*

"it's not really relevant anymore to talk about prevention, in their case. Rather, let's talk about us."

No Thucy, what I'm doing is giving you grief from coming into this thread acting like the crime itself is some minor thing that isn't important anymore. Like prevention isn't important, and instead we should all switch to something more important, a conversation about right and wrong.

Excuse me if I think it's far more important to take a moment to make sure our members know how apple and other big companies abuse their users lack of security knowledge then to have a debate over right and wrong that isn't going to get anywhere. Go make a new thread if you want a morals discussion, but I'm going to follow the OP and talk about the case itself and how I personally am disgusted with apple's lack of clear user security information.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
Sorry, but the OP can go either way. I'm not going to let you monopolize the discussion. I brought up what I brought up because I think it's equally important and needed to be said , especially since this is a forum of men.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
And you'll notice I did say "in their case," which is to say, for Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, et al, the damage is done. Have some sympathy for them, for a moment at least
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
02 Sep 14 UTC
Here's morals for you. At this moment I can hack into any of my friends facebook accounts and anonymously post the most embarrassing conversations they have with their family/boyfriend/girlfriends/friends, etc. I'm not going to, yay I'm a good person.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
Your point...? I'm on your side, dude. People need to be better protected. I'm just saying, with respect to the OP, it is also relevant to point out it's not okay to look up the nude pictures. No one else had said it - and so it needed to be said, because sadly it doesn't go without saying.

The people that look, as I said, are usually not scum, often they just haven't stopped for two seconds to ask whether it right or not. So no, it's not irrelevant.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
02 Sep 14 UTC
I have sympathy for them, did I not say multiple times I am beyond frustrated with how they and everyone affected by this hack was taken advantage of by apple's lack of clarity on their data practices. This is terrible for them, and being a celeb has to suck because every reporter in existence would have taken those pictures if the opportunity was there because they know that's what people want to see. It sucks that people want to see that and are willing to objectify people, that's something we'll be fighting for decades to come.

I don't think anyone in this thread feels like the people affected by this are anything besides victims. The few that did seem to have changed their opinion once they realized how easy it is for this type of thing to happen.

And that is important to me, to make sure that people understand an immediate threat to their data. Especially if apple hasn't gotten the issue resolved yet.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
02 Sep 14 UTC
My point is simple. You came in this thread effectively saying "Hey, my point is more important then your's so we're just going to talk about mine now". Why in the world would you think anyone is going to care about what you say after that no matter how valid a point?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
Good, I'm glad it's important to you. I don't understand why we are fighting. You say we will be fighting objectification of women and celebrities for decades to come, and you're right. One way we can fight it *today* is by the simple act of not looking at the pictures. That's all I had to say about it. Because again, sadly, it doesn't go without saying. For you it seems to, but I know there are those on this forum who have already seen them, others who may soon see them. As I said, this is a forum of men. I know how it works.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
02 Sep 14 UTC
""Hey, my point is more important then your's so we're just going to talk about mine now"

Not what I said. Again, re-read "in their case." There is no reason for us to be fighting.
